Capcom’s Resident Evil 3 remake is a reimagining of the 1991 PS1 classic survival horror that stars Jill Valentine, the handsome Carlos Oliveira, and a very ugly monster that goes by Nemesis. By working together, Jill and Carlos must finally put a stop to the threat while also working on finding a cure for the virus.

You’re probably very aware of this already but this newly released remake is absolutely stunning and is a delight for the eyes. Considering it’s been over 20 years since the original launch of the game, let’s take a look back at how the PS1 version compares to the modern re-telling in 2020.

Let’s start off with Jill Valentine’s design itself. Capcom has definitely changed up her look quite a bit. Even though she’s still wearing her classic blue-colored top, she’s wearing some straps now, which looks to be more comfortable and appropriate for the situation going on in the plot of Resident Evil 3.

Thanks to modern game development practices such as motion capture and being more concerned about voice work and dialogue, Jill Valentine really shines this time around and feels more like a grounded character.

Carlos

Carlos Oliveira still looks to be the dashingly handsome and gruff military dude who likes to kick down unlocked doors and flirt with Jill. Capcom hasn’t made too many changes to his look here in the remake but as you can see, Carlos’s hair is much, much shaggier.

Nemesis

Okay, so Nemesis has always been a terrible, terrible monster to look at. His teeth are way too over-exposed, his skin needs major work, and those tentacles can stay far away from me.

I do have to say, though, that I wish this mod that turns Nemesis into Thomas the Tank Engine was able to be used on consoles because I would much weather want to look at that than Nemesis’ ugly thing that he calls a face.

A Fiery Raccoon City Street

This 2020 remake of Resident Evil 3 may be pretty short when it comes to the campaign but there so many intricate details woven into this version of Raccoon City as you can see if you look around the town and admire at all of the shop names and posters and such –there might even be an easter egg or two if you stop to smell the roses.

And also, as you can see from this comparison, fire looks way better in video games now than they did back in the 90s.

Subway Station

That static background image of a subway cart in the original Resident Evil 3 surprisingly doesn’t look too bad when looking at it side-by-side with the remake.

Of course, the lighting and detail is much more apparent in the modern version but man, just looking at Jill’s old outfit makes me giggle –who wears that to fight zombies? At least put on some combat boots or tennis shoes or something.

The Stinky Sewers

Yup, the sewers are still gross, scary, and dark in the Resident Evil 3 Remake but unlike Resident Evil 2, there are no mutated alligators… at least none that I have noticed!

Basic Info before Speedrunning

It is highly recommended that you beat the game first, then farm some points to buy the infinite rocket launcher.

This weapon makes speedrunning insanely easy. It makes every enemy a joke. If you want to make your speedrun as EASY as possible, I recommend buying all of the inventory upgrades, getting all of the stat boosting items, and also unlocking the bolt cutters and lock pick. The stat boosting items will make you almost unkillable and the the bolt cutters and lock pick will shave a few seconds off the run, but not much. These are just a small help though. The infinite rocket launcher is what makes speedrunning ridiculously easy. You also take no damage from the rocket launcher. So if you are surrounded, you can simply shoot a rocket at your feet and kill everything around you.

With that all said, this game is pretty linear as long as you know what item to run to next. You should be able to easily get around a 1 hour speedrun on any difficulty using the rocket launcher and the bulleted list below. Good luck and have fun.

  • Go to 2nd floor, jump out window, grab key from courtyard
  • Go back to 2nd floor and open locked door to grab ID card
  • Use ID card on locked door on other side of 2nd floor
  • Go grab tape for tape recorder
  • Go back to voice activated door and open with tape recorder
  • Grab vaccine
  • Go back to Jill and give her vaccine
  • Defend Jill and T
  • Now playing as Jill lockpick the first door you can and go into underground umbrella lab
  • Go to the elevator next to the fuse box and push the elevator button triggering the power outage
  • Grab all 3 fuses
  • Put fuses into fuse box and go up elevator
  • Go get both vials for the vaccine base and combine to make vaccine base
  • Mix in the vaccine maker, combination is mid, high, low
  • Escape facility
  • Fight nemesis again and kill him
  • Run a little more

Following the success of its predecessor, Capcom’s remake of Resident Evil 3 builds upon the strengths of its critically acclaimed Resident Evil 2. Providing a much larger area to explore, Resident Evil 3 allows players to explore a much wider version of Raccoon City. Including a variety of new systems and mechanics, Jill Valentine is equipped to handle the post-apocalyptic world of Resident Evil 3. Utilizing its stellar lighting and sound design, the title evokes an extreme level of unease and anxiety. Coupled with the omnipresent Nemesis, and Resident Evil 3 is a masterclass embodiment of what it means to be a survival horror game.

The titular antagonist of its elder game, Nemesis returns new and improved, with a brand-new bag of deadly skills and weapons in his arsenal. Unlike Mr. X, Nemesis is an almost unavoidable threat within the game, with a variety of distance closing tools to utilize. The behemoth is nearly indestructible as well, the only option available to the player is to stun the enemy for a short period allowing them to escape. However, this is not always an option so learning how to avoid the hulking figure is a must to survive the zombie plagued world of Resident Evil 3.

How to Avoid Nemesis in Resident Evil 3

Avoiding Nemesis is a task as difficult as it sounds. The creature is equipped with an intense walk-speed, long-range weapons, a variety of distance closing attacks, and a presence that yields itself to mistakes. So learning how to avoid the character is an art in itself.

Unlike Mr. X, Nemesis is not an enemy that can be “juked” a technique used in previous Resident Evil titles. His attacks are all far-reaching or wide-swinging, allowing him to catch a player trying to run around or away from him. So to avoid the beast, learning how to perfect dodge, or simply using the dodge mechanic is a must. The perfect dodge allows players to unleash a series of attacks on the monster dishing out some incredible damage. It also allows Jill to put some space between herself and the beast, providing some coveted distance from the monster.

However, as you flee the creature be aware of his tentacle attack, alongside his tendency to be armed with powerful guns and weapons in his possession. So be sure to be unpredictable in your running pattern to avoid his attacks. And when the creature jumps in front of you, it is important to be ready to dodge his next attack and continue your escape.

If you have bullets to spare be sure to knock him down and then make your escape. This allows the most time for players to run-away as his stagger window is pretty lengthy and can create a large amount of space.

New Resident Evil 3 Remake gameplay to debut during livestream today

You can get an exclusive look at new Resident Evil 3 Remake gameplay during a special livestream later today.

Resident Evil 3 Remake is set to release near the start of April, which means we only have a few short weeks left before players can dive in and take on Nemesis once again. To help keep the hype train pushing at full speed, Capcom is holding a special gameplay livestream later this afternoon.

The livestream will kick off at 2 PM ET / 11 AM PT on both the Resident Evil Twitch and YouTube channels. It’s unclear what section of the game the livestream will showcase, but we’re definitely hoping to see more of Nemesis in action. Mr. X was by far one of the best parts of the Resident Evil 2 Remake, and with Nemesis playing such a large role in the original Resident Evil 3, we’re excited to see how Capcom has recaptured this villain in the remake.

There’s plenty of content left for Capcom to show off when it comes to Resident Evil 3 Remake, and if the release is even half as good as last year’s Resident Evil 2 Remake, which managed to earn itself the Shacknews Best Graphics award of 2019, then we’re sure RE fans will be satisfied. Resident Evil 3’s Remake Is Even Better On A Second Playthrough (At First)

Some of the Resident Evil 3 remake’s best moments happen on a second playthrough, but playing it multiple times also shows just how linear it is.

Playing the Resident Evil 3 remake a second time and beyond shows just how good some of its design decisions are, but multiple playthoughs also bring to light its pacing flaws. Certain sections of Resident Evil 3 feel great to master on subsequent playthroughs, while others quickly become a repetitive slog.

Resident Evil 3 is much more action-focused than the Resident Evil 2 remake, just like its PS1 predecessor was more action-oriented than the original Resident Evil 2. Its short run time – only about six hours or less on a first playthrough – has caused controversy among fans, many of whom feel its changes and cut content make it a poor remake, even if it’s a solid game on its own.

But even that much is debatable. Resident Evil 3 reviews from critics were mostly positive, but less so than Resident Evil 2 reviews. Part of what makes Resident Evil 3 disappointing is its relative lack of replay value compared to other games in the series. While Resident Evil 2 had two campaigns, each with A and B scenarios, and the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis had “live selection” story choices to shake things up, Resident Evil 3′s story is the same every single time. There’s still fun to be had each time it’s played, but certain elements of that unchangeable set of events eventually become grating.

Replaying Resident Evil 3 Reveals Its Strengths – And Its Linearity

When starting up a second Resident Evil 3 playthrough, players are set loose in the small but winding Raccoon City area after the brief linear opening section. What was initially an intimidating, measured crawl through the game’s first open area gives way to a feeling of mastery. Players know when the scares are coming, where the keys are hidden, and what’s behind every door. This becomes somewhat boring on the third and fourth playthrough (except on RE3′s hidden Nightmare and Inferno difficulties, which switch up item placement and change enemy encounters), but it’s just plain satisfying on the second, as players are able to get through the area at a much quicker pace, this time with a better grip on RE3′s great combat and with the knowledge to correct their mistakes from the first run.

Resident Evil 3′s open-ended sections are even more satisfying to take on with the bonus items from RE3′s post-game item shop, which can provide players bonuses like early access to weapons and extra inventory space, ensuring each playthrough feels unique. But all of these joys – the mastery of an open area, the opportunity to correct past mistakes, and the knowledge to be smarter about collecting gear – fade once players bump into Resident Evil 3′s more linear segments. After a boss fight and a few mostly on-rails chase sequences, the player is thrust into Carlos’ shoes, which resets their inventory collection and halts RE3′s sense of progression. Jill takes over again only for the duration of RE3′s most frustrating Nemesis boss fight, there’s a few cutscenes, and then it’s back another Carlos section.

The first time through the game, all these moments feel like cool set pieces that tell an engaging story. But after that story has been experienced already, they lose much of their appeal, and the game’s middle section becomes an exercise of skipping cutscenes and making it through many small chunks of gameplay as quickly as possible. Resident Evil 3 is at its best when it gives players the freedom to explore and master its twisting environments, and that’s no more clear than when experiencing the fun of traversing its open locations a second time. But doing so also means trudging through a bunch of samey, challenge-less chases and boss battles, over and over again.

Resident Evil 3 Remake Gameplay: First Look at Mechanics and More

I’m a young artist from Pittsburgh, PA who is a tremendous fan of all things horror. It’s VERY difficult to actually scare me, so when something accomplishes it, I love it forever. Resident Evil has always been my favorite, ever since I was a little kid, but I’m perfectly happy to spend time with Silent Hill, Fatal Frame and many other games.

UPDATE: Kat’s English Language stream of Resident Evil 3 Remake went off without a hitch yesterday, I’ve added a few details from her stream in among these original details.

We’re now officially less than one month away from the release of Resident Evil 3 Remake, and the hype is bursting at the seams at this point. After finally getting some gameplay footage a week ago along with confirmation that a demo is coming, we’ve been eagerly waiting for anything more to come from Capcom. Today that wish is granted, as a two and a half hour Capcom TV stream played Resident Evil 3 Remake for about 15 minutes. Don’t be afraid, there’s actually no spoilers here — all of the gameplay is set in areas we’ve already seen, and there’s practically zero story content (and what there is, we’ve already seen in other footage). While the gameplay is mostly dedicated to exploration, we do learn a lot of important key features about the game, and many are very surprising. Check out the footage, and I’ll do a breakdown of what’s new below:

While many fans have been assuming that Resident Evil 3 Remake will basically just be REmake 2 with a fresh coat of paint over it, it appears that Capcom and Neobards have gone out of their way to ensure this is a very different experience from the previous remake. From a mechanic standpoint, a tremendous amount appears to have either been revised, changed completely, or be an all-new feature added in. Here’s what we’ve noticed so far:

  • The knife is no longer a defense item, but a weapon in your inventory that is equipped and unequipped just like a gun. The knife no longer degrades, either, and the animation for using it appears to be a stab animation from a pre-release build of REmake 2.
  • You now manually have to escape from a zombie’s grasp. In REmake 2, being grabbed and bitten was an unskippable animation with no way of speeding it up other than using a defense item to get out of it. Now in Resident Evil 3 Remake you can mash a button (◉ in Japan, ✖/A in the west) to get out of taking more damage, and there’s a button prompt on screen that fills up as you mash.
  • We get a clearer view of how the dodge mechanic works; tapping RB/R1 on the controller will dodge in the direction you’re holding on the left stick, at any time. Hitting it perfectly just as a zombie is about to grab hold of you allows you to perform a slow-motion counter-attack, where the targeting reticle snaps to the enemy’s head. Note: Kat has explained on Twitter that there is no slow-motion effect, Jill herself simply moves faster. Looking back over footage, that does indeed seem to be the case — the screen effect simply gives off the impression things are moving slower, but they actually aren’t.
  • The inventory screen has been redesigned. While the general gist of it remains the same, the inventory itself has been centered. The EKG health readout is still in the lower left, however, and the D-Pad quick inventory icon has been moved to the lower right. In general, the inventory slots have a more rounded shape to them, rather than the strict squares used in REmake 2. Also, after picking up an item for the first time, you will no longer have to sort it into the inventory manually upon future pickups of that same item.
  • Doors no longer seem to open upon contact. In both RE7 and REmake 2, doors could both be opened manually (tapping a button) or they would swing open automatically upon touching them. It’s difficult to tell from the footage, but it appears that you will have to tap a button in order to open doors now.
  • Zombies appear to lack the dismemberment mechanic from REmake 2. This is, however, footage of the Japanese build, and the Japanese CERO D version of REmake 2 also lacked dismemberment. In the English footage, Kat only ever went for headshots, so it’s difficult to tell at the moment. I reached out to her to see if we could get clarification, but she declined to comment.
  • Yellow padlocks may indicate that a lockpick is necessary. We’ve previously heard that lockpicks will feature in the game, and these appear to be the most likely candidate for use. They also strongly resemble the red padlocks from RE4 and 5. We can see a padlock on a locker in the back of Moon Donuts, as well as very briefly on the front door to Toy Uncle. This would greatly expand the lockpick’s use, which was only required four times in the original RE3.
  • Yellow chains make a return from Resident Evil 7 and REmake 2. These chains are separate from the yellow padlocks and require bolt-cutters to “unlock” so to speak. We can see the doors to the Supermarket across the street from Toy Uncle are chained shut, with an icon to interact with them in Kat’s footage.
  • Many stores and buildings can be entered and explored, and “Metroidvania” interlocking paths unite the map in the same way they did in REmake 2.
  • RE4-7 Wooden boxes do indeed make a return, and we see a red jewel stored in a special box (similar to the box REmake 2‘s S.T.A.R.S. badge/dongle was stored in). The red jewel is an entirely new item, although visually similar to the blue and green gems from the original RE3. It’s been reported that red gems may be a form of currency used to get items, but that has yet to be shown in any official capacity.
  • Kat highlights a few more areas than the Japanese stream did, and we get clearer looks at the clock mechanism in the subway (which some have speculated to be an updated version of the city hall puzzle, and what we’ll need the red jewel for). We also get a look into the front doors of the pharmacy, and a look at a classic RE3 jumpscare recreated for a modern audience.

Outside of that, the grand majority of the new content comes in the form of easter eggs. Tons of charming Capcom and Resident Evil shout-outs, from Ghosts N’ Goblins to acknowledging things like Outbreak‘s Umbrella Noodles, abound. Fans also noticed that the green armor room doors from the original PS1 Resident Evil trilogy have been remade in loving detail here. Kat also enters and hangs out in the safe room significantly more than the Japanese demo, allowing us to hear the new version of Free From Fear, the classic RE3 safe room music. It appears REmake 3‘s score will be a lot closer to the original than REmake 2‘s mostly remixed score. A ton of care has gone into making each part of the city feel unique as well as sort of warm and nostalgic, and I’m absolutely in love with it.

If you’d like to see potentially a little more of this demo, not to mention in English, Capcom’s Resident Evil Community Manager Kat will be streaming it today. Appearing on Twitch and YouTube at 7PM GMT / 8PM CET / 2PM ET / 11AM PT, we’ll get to see what these menus look like in English and more. Other than that, a demo has been promised to release some time in the future, and of course, the full Resident Evil 3 Remake releases April 3rd on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Resident Evil 3 Remake: 1999 vs. 2020 Gameplay Comparison Revealed

Resident Evil 3 is originally a 1999 game. That’s old. Not only is the survival-horror game older than some of you reading this, but it’s from a completely different era of gaming where developers were still learning how to master making 3D games. Sometimes I think we forget how games from this era looked and played. The nostalgia makes the idea of playing Resident Evil 3 sound enticing, but actually playing it is a different story.

That said, it’s not 1999 anymore. It’s 2020, and games look incredible. And this is another thing we take for granted; how good games look, and how far they’ve come. Resident Evil 3 Remake may be a 1999 game, but that’s the only thing 1999 about it. The difference between the original and the new remake is actually shocking.

Taking to YouTube, PlayStation released new gameplay of the remake, but not just any ol’ gameplay, gameplay smooshed together with footage of the original game. Of course, there’s nothing that highlights the advancement in technology from 1999 to 2020 more than watching the remake played alongside the original. Yet, no matter how better it looks, there’s still a sense of nostalgia and familiarity to it all.

Resident Evil 3 Remake is set to drop on April via the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Capcom has already confirmed the game won’t be delayed, so make sure to mark your calendars and get those doctor notes ready.

If last week’s early previews of the Resident Evil 3 remake whet your appetite for a little more Raccoon City action, then we have good news for you. A new Resident Evil 3 gameplay stream is due to be broadcast at 11am PT (2pm ET, 7pm GMT, 8pm CET) today.

The news was announced on Twitter, where Capcom community manager and host of the show Katastrophe confirmed that the broadcast would be a maximum of one hour and wouldn’t reveal any spoilers for puzzles or other surprises, so even if you’re keen to go in as fresh as possible, you don’t need to worry too much. It’ll be limited to the areas shown in the press footage already, though this time obviously with a bit more freedom.

We’re not sure what Capcom intends to showcase with this Resident Evil 3 stream if they’re not showing anything new, but we won’t complain about getting a longer look at the new dodge mechanic or updated enemies like the Hunter Gamma. Well, perhaps we’d rather not look too closely at the Hunter Gamma. That thing has sharp teeth, y’know?

Resident Evil 3 remake demo release date hinted at in gameplay livestream

Resident Evil 3‘s first livestream ever was underwhelming, but the game still looks fantastic.

A new livestream for Resident Evil 3 ended with a totally grisly flourish, but at least it gave us a quick update on the status of the upcoming demo for the game.

The official Resident Evil Twitch account held a 25-minute Resident Evil 3 remake livestream on Wednesday, following up an episode of the Japan-based Capcom TV that aired earlier that morning. Hosted by Resident Evil community manager Kat “Katastrophe,” the gameplay livestream opened with the previously released Nemesis trailer that showcases the game’s story and intense gunplay. Afterward, Katastrophe took to the streets of downtown Racoon City in the PS4 version of the game.

“I know a lot of you guys are excited about an RE3 demo,” Katastrophe said in response to comments asking about it, “and in the meanwhile as a demo is coming, while we’re working on that, I really hope this stream can provide at least a little bit of a nice filler to make the wait easier.”

Capcom confirmed in a February 25 tweet that a public demo would be released at some point, but the details remain uncertain. We’re now less than a full month away from the game’s release, so a demo couldn’t come soon enough. By comparison, Final Fantasy VII Remake comes out after RE3, and that already has a public demo available on PS4.

The game looks like a lot of fun in action and the livestream is still worth checking out even if it doesn’t reveal anything too surprising.

The community manager began by showcasing the knife, reworked dodging, and the ability to shake off zombies with a QTE. The stream goes on to highlight Jill’s redesign that blends her original design with some more modern and practical elements.

The whole this is mostly a spoiler-free experience. There are no puzzles or collectible files shown, and most of the buildings shown go unexplored.

Later in the stream, Katastrophe took a moment to go over the attention to detail in the environment and the fact that there are environmental interactions that can be used to take down zombies, like hitting a generator or propane tank.

The stream’s chat then chose to have Capcom end the stream by showing what happens when Jill dies. She was then sacrificed to a zombie, which tore out Jill’s throat, sending the player to Resident Evil 3‘s death screen pronouncing “YOU ARE DEAD.” The stream was fairly chill, so this was quite the brutal way to end it.

The Inverse Analysis

While Resident Evil 3 looks amazing and this stream did a generally good job at giving a general overview of the gameplay, it’s disappointing that not much new was shown and that we don’t have a confirmed demo release date just yet. Most of what we’ve seen of this remake has just been of this one street; hopefully we’ll seem more of the game’s areas before it launches. If you were unsure if Resident Evil 3 would play as well as the Resident Evil 2 remake, this livestream did a great job at squashing any possible concerns and making the game seem worthwhile.

Resident Evil 3 will be released on April 3, 2020.
