The Resident Evil 3: Nemesis Remake Takes a Shot at Resurrecting the Franchise’s Weakest Game

Resident Evil 2 Remake was one of 2019’s best video games. The overhaul of the 1998 PlayStation classic did more than update the graphics — it reworked the control scheme, made zombies scary again, and reintroduced the world to the terrifying and unstoppable Mr. X. A year later, Capcom has released its remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, hoping fans find it just as engaging as its predecessor.

The original Nemesis was an odd game. Its two predecessors codified a new genre, what Capcom calls “Survival Horror.” In such a game, players have limited resources to fight the zombies and monsters that pursue them. Often, it’s better to run. Resident Evil 3 tried something different — it’s more of a proper action game. The horror is toned down and the violence amped up. The player has more control, more ammunition, and more options for dealing with their foes. But the monsters are also far tougher to take down.

“The original took Survival Horror and added more action elements,” says Resident Evil 3: Nemesis producer Peter Fabiano. In Resident Evil, police officer Jill Valentine navigates a zombie-filled mansion solving puzzles and killing shambling zombies. In Resident Evil 3, the plague has almost destroyed Racoon City, and Valentine has to escape while fighting for her life. It’s like the difference between Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s sequel Aliens.

“[Nemesis] was always meant to expand on Jill’s story and show off more of Raccoon City in an attempt to conclude the first Resident Evil trilogy,” Fabiano says. “The director on Resident Evil 3’s reimagining was also lead programmer on the 1999 version, so he knew what the team was originally trying to accomplish, and was able to focus on his vision for how we should reimagine the new version while staying true to its roots.”

While Resident Evil 2’s big bad was the terrifying but slow-moving Mr. X — a haunting presence who constantly pursued players in the later half of the game — the antagonist here is the titular Nemesis, an uglier, faster, and meaner Mr. X that pursues Valentine from the moment the game starts until the credits roll. He’s a slasher movie villain, a Mike Meyers or Jason Voorhees. He can’t be stopped, and he’s relentless in his pursuit.

“Nemesis is way more agile than [Mr. X], and he can use his tentacles to grab Jill or jump long distances and quickly close in on her,” Fabiano says. “He can also use a variety of weapons, which adds another level of unpredictability to his character. You never know what to expect with Nemesis, so don’t be afraid to run away if you can.”

Still, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was the weakest of the classic gaming trilogy. In moving from horror to action, Resident Evil lost something in the process. But Fabiano says this remake is a chance to make the action horror game Capcom always envisioned.

About This Game

Overview

The girl should be on guard, because in addition to the hordes of the living dead, members of the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service military squad are officially sent to rescue civilians. In addition, a terrifying mutant named Nemesis, a new version of the so-called Bio Organic Weapon, in the second part of the series, presented by the powerful Tyrant, follows in its footsteps. Fortunately, Jill is not doomed to a lonely adventure and can count on the help of the mercenary Carlos Oliveira, who is the second playable character in the game.

As in the remake of the second part of the series, in Resident Evil 3 we observe the action from a third-person perspective. During the game, we cross a city controlled by zombies and perform further mission tasks, collecting valuable materials and notes that are a source of information about the situation in the city, as well as destroying many opponents. In addition, various environmental puzzles await us.

The authors provide us with not only melee weapons, but also firearms. Since the ammunition here is a scarce commodity, it is worth using it sparingly, so sometimes it is better to just run away than get rid of the cartridges. This tactic works especially in the event of a confrontation with the Nemesis that follows us. The mutant, repeating the word «Staaaaars» like a mantra, gives the impression of an indestructible monster. In addition, he seems smarter than his predecessor — he can not only appear out of nowhere usually at the least expected moments, but also use weapons and his favorite «toy» is a rocket launcher.

Resident Evil 3, focused on a single player campaign, is accompanied by a multiplayer mode called Resident Evil Resistance. While the four players assume the role of survivors trying to escape from the laboratory of Umbrella Corporation, the fifth, the so-called Mastermind, must prevent their escape at all costs. Resident Evil 3, as a full-fledged remake, boasts not only updated mechanics, but also a completely new graphic design. The authors used photogrammetry technology, due to which the visual sphere of this game is presented at a high level. Attention is drawn both to a very detailed environment, and to detailed models of characters and opponents. The soundtrack has also been designed from the ground up.

New Resident Evil 3 Remake details surface – may contain spoilers – Update

By Stephany Nunneley, Friday, 6 March 2020 16:06 GMT

Some new information on Resident Evil 3 Remake has come out, and we’re warning you ahead of time some spoilers are coming.

Update: Turns out one of the biggest spoilers from the Resident Evil 3 Remake info dump today wasn’t a spoiler after all.

The OXM article stated Nemesis was able to break into Safe Rooms in the game – if he was chasing you. Turns out, that’s not the case.

According to Capcom via an update from Games Radar, the room Nemesis broke into was mistaken for a Safe Room during the preview.

In short, yes, Safe Rooms still seem to be safe. Thank goodness. The original story follows.

Original story

This new information on Resident Evil 3 Remake comes from the latest issue of OXM, and there are plenty of spoilers. So if you want to go into the game unsullied, you probably don’t want to read any further.

One of the most interesting bits out of the article has to do with Nemesis. Apparently, he will be able to break into the Safe Room if you are being chased by him. This means you are not safe just because you ran into the room. Granted, there will be areas where Nemesis can’t follow you, but he will still remain a consistent threat.

Speaking of threats, according to the reddit post, the zombie AI has been reworked to where they can work together or as a single threat. Zombies will also behave differently when they are alone or in a group.

Grave Digger, spiders, and Hunter Betas are also confirmed as enemies.

The article also discusses the size of Raccoon City and how it is much larger than the original game. There will be multiple paths in the city to take, and Jill can unlock even more through the subway system to other parts of the city as a form of fast travel. The subway system will also act as a hub of sorts. You will also have more side options available and optional back-tracking, but as with everything, there are risks involved if you decide to go back into an area previously visited.

It also discusses how Carlos will have playable sequences, but not his own campaign. While you are venturing through the city, he will also pop up on occasion as he goes about his business.

There’s more information pulled from the article through the reddit link, so give it a read if you want to know even more.

While you wait on the game to be released, have a look at our Resident Evil 3 Remake hub which features information on the demo, pre-order bonuses, gameplay and more. You can also give Alex’s hands-on with the game a read.

It’s out on April 3 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Sometimes we include links to online retail stores. If you click on one and make a purchase we may receive a small commission. For more information, go here.

New Resident Evil 3 Remake patch boosts Xbox One X performance

A night and day improvement.

A story with a happy ending? You bet! When we first took a look at Resident Evil 3 Remake’s playable, we were impressed by another storming technological showcase for Capcom’s excellent RE Engine – but there was a show-stopping problem: the Xbox One X rendition of the game significantly under-performed against PlayStation 4 Pro. Indeed, in certain scenes, frame-rate could even drop beneath Xbox One S’s output. The good news is that the game has been patched, delivering a huge increase to performance.

To understand the situation more clearly, we need to look back at the brilliant Resident Evil 2 Remake and its presentation on the enhanced machines. Both PS4 Pro and Xbox One X delivered a final rendered output of 2880×1620, upscaled to 4K. This presentation was in itself reconstructed using a checkerboard-like effect – a process where the Microsoft machine enjoyed a quality advantage over its Sony equivalent. In moving to Resident Evil 3 Remake, PS4 Pro seemingly remains where it is, with Xbox One X pushed to reconstructed 2160p output instead. In doing so, a massive chunk of performance was lost – something that was immediately apparent to the Resident Evil fanbase running on Microsoft’s machine.

“Capcom is definitely aware of the fan feeling with regards to Xbox performance, so they [the developers] may look into providing a solution some time after launch,” we were told at the time via a statement which essentially offered no time frame or even a firm commitment to fixing the game, but the good news is that the solution is now here – and it’s a relatively straightforward fix. Based on pixel counts, it seems that the developer has matched RE2 Remake by running the game at 2880×1620 rather than 3840×2160. That’s just 55 per cent of the pixel count overall (75 per cent of native resolution on each axis) but the impact to image quality isn’t especially noticeable during gameplay – but the boost to frame-rate definitely is.

A detailed look at the new Xbox One X patch for Resident Evil 3 Remake, bringing with it a big leap in performance.

A game that mostly ran in a kind of 40-45fps No Man’s Land spends much more of its time at the target 60 frames per second, delivering performance results that are very similar indeed overall to the excellent PlayStation 4 Pro version of the game. Gameplay mostly plays out at the target frame-rate, with only major explosions and other bandwidth-heavy effects causing drops to consistency, usually with just fleeting drops into the 50s. During cutscenes, Capcom is less beholden to its rendering budgets, allowing performance to fluctuate more noticeably – the price you’ll pay for those extremely detailed character models and often stunning set-pieces. However, as these aspects of the game are not interactive, they have no real bearing on how it actually plays.

Comparing the new patch up against the original version, the gap on the performance charts is often vast – especially in the cinematics, and comparing the same content to the PS4 Pro version (which seems unchanged from launch), cutscenes either run a touch faster or a touch slower, while actual gameplay seems more a little more stable overall. However, the bottom line is that both enhanced machines now enjoy a brilliant rendition of the game. Is the end result everything we’d hoped for? There is the lingering sense that Capcom could have done more and offered more options which would have had beneficial results on all console versions across the board.

Dropping back resolution to match RE2 Remake’s solution is the obvious and cleanest choice in restoring performance, but we would have preferred to have seen the option to choose between resolution or performance, while an optional 30fps cap could have allowed users to run the higher resolution mode at 2160p30. A 4K option would have also opened the door to restoring full performance once the next-gen consoles hit the market. In turn, the same 30fps option would have helped to iron out the inconsistencies found in the base console versions, which often linger in 40fps territory and can actually drop beneath into the 30s anyway.

Ultimately though, it’s good news – Xbox One X trades some clarity that you likely won’t miss for a big slice of extra performance, with the game improving considerably as a result. And interestingly, you don’t even need to own the game to experience the upgrade: it’s good to report that the developer has also updated the playable demo that kicked off the whole controversy – so if you’ve not bought the game and want to check out the improvement before you do, Capcom has you covered.

Resident Evil 3 review: A glimpse into post-pandemic fiction

“This pandemic has spread faster than any disease in modern history.” The first words spoken in Resident Evil 3 make an instant impression in the era of the coronavirus outbreak. They form part of that horror-movie cliché, the opening newsreel, alongside briefings from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and images of people wearing face masks.

But ripped-from-the-headlines this is not – the game is a remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, which was released for the original PlayStation in 1999. The new version has been in the works for some time, and its release in these troubled times is a complete coincidence, but one that highlights the divide we will increasingly see between pre- and post-pandemic fiction.

The first Resident Evil game, released in 1996, essentially invented the “survival horror” genre, in which players are given limited resources while they face a variety of creepy foes. It takes place in a spooky mansion, where police officers Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield are sent to investigate a disturbance and, well, it goes very badly.

At the heart of the Resident Evil series is the T-virus, a fictional infection that turns people into zombies. After puzzling your way through the mansion as either Valentine or Redfield (you choose who to play as), you discover a secret, underground lab owned by the Umbrella Corporation. It has engineered the T-virus into a bioweapon – which, I hasten to add, has been thoroughly debunked as an origin for the coronavirus – and kicked off the zombie apocalypse.

As the series progresses, the virus spreads through the wider population. Soon the whole of the fictional Racoon City has been infected and zombified. When things pick up in Resident Evil 3, Valentine is attempting to escape the city while being pursued by the monstrous Nemesis, an unstoppable mutant created by Umbrella that you confront in a series of escalating boss fights.

It all feels very like a B-movie, but I couldn’t help experiencing it as a mirror of our current situation, albeit one that is far more extreme. Steering Valentine through the ruined city streets, attempting to keep away from the shambling hordes, I felt as if I were practising an extreme form of social distancing – on the rare occasions I go to a supermarket now, I find myself dodging people in the aisles in an effort to stay the required 2 metres away from them.

Things got weirder when, later in the game, I explored another horror-movie trope, the creepy abandoned hospital. A note left by a nurse read: “We’ve called in our off-duty staff. It’s all hands on deck now. We have got to contain this chaos!”

Of course, none of this was created with the coronavirus in mind, and the analogy breaks down further with the portrayal of scientists as villains. The evil scientists of the Umbrella Corporation mark Resident Evil 3 out as pre-pandemic fiction, totally at odds with an era where chief medical officers and epidemiologists have become household names and healthcare workers are lauded as national heroes.

The 9/11 attacks had a huge influence on video games, giving rise to modern military shooters such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 that moved away from the second world war and sci-fi settings normally associated with the genre. In a similar vein, I expect we will see a lot of heroic scientists in fiction in the coming years: the Chernobyl TV miniseries broadcast last year is an obvious blueprint to follow, though I am less certain of how that show might translate into a video game.

One game, Plague Inc., is already making the shift. While the original version sees you playing as a virus, trying to spread around the world as quickly as possible by developing key mutations, the developers are now working on an update that puts you in charge of managing healthcare systems in an effort to fight the virus. It looks set to be the first post-pandemic video game.

Resident Evil 3 Remake New Game Plus, difficulty settings, game length and more

Resident Evil 3 Remake fans, here is something for you today. Some new details have emerged from various Resident Evil 3 Remake interviews. In an interview with GamingBolt, Resident Evil 3 producer Peter Fabiano talked about Nemesis. In terms of visual design, the art director Yonghee Cho wanted to make Nemesis fit naturally in the re-imagined and photo-realistic Raccoon City.

Gameplay-wise they wanted players to feel that they are constantly being pursued by the Nemesis. Hence the name The Pursuer and that’s why he is so agile in his movements. Which he very much is, since I had a taste myself. Fortunately, the dodge mechanic works quite well on him.

In another interview with GameInformer, Fabiano talked about the combat knife in Resident Evil 3 Remake. According to him the knife is now inexhaustible, meaning you can use it without any fear of breaking, or some other nonsense.

A game that is all about survival horror and with all the resources being limited, you need something that you can always rely on. So basically, if you are one of these players, who likes his knife-only runs of the game, well..you are in luck.

Lastly, according to a ResetEra post, the demo has been data-mined and many new details have been unveiled. I will only mention a couple of them, because many of these may contain spoilers.

The game will feature four difficulty levels: Assisted, Normal, Hard and Super Hard. There is also New Game Plus that supposedly changes up several things in the campaign.

Lastly, the game will last around 5 hours according to some leaks.

You can follow the ResetEra link and read the rest of the information, if you don’t mind spoilers.

Resident Evil 3 Remake will release on April 3rd.

Resident Evil 3 Review — A Jill Royale With Cheese

Resident Evil 3 is an excellent remake of a fan favorite game that features great action gameplay, jaw-dropping visuals, and not enough Carlos.

The Resident Evil franchise has long been one of my favorite series in gaming. I vividly remember staying up late into the night, devouring the Resident Evil remake on GameCube. More than anything, the original game’s lore stuck with me, so I quickly went out and bought all of the S.D. Perry novels based on the games. I was so into the story of Resident Evil that when the first movie came out, I begged my mom to rent it. She finally relented, on the condition that I didn’t let my brother watch. So, he sat in the other room and I just described the movie to him. The obsession was real.

Anyways, because I came to the series relatively late and never owned a PlayStation One, the two series entries that always evaded me were Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Granted, I knew the basic story from the novelizations, but never got the chance to play them myself. So, when Capcom announced the Resident Evil 2 remake a few years ago, I was ecstatic to finally play the games that had evaded me for so long. Fortunately, Resident Evil 2’s remake was a masterclass in how to update an old classic for modern audiences and would have been my Game of the Year in 2019 if not for the sublime Judgment.

With the success of RE2, it was a surprise to literally no one when Capcom revealed they would remake Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Both games are fan-favorites that deserved the update and, after seeing what the team did with Mr. X, I think I speak for everyone when I say that we needed to witness how the stalking mechanics would evolve with Nemesis. But, given the totality with which the RE team knocked RE2’s remake out of the park, how could they possibly hope to top it with RE3?

Game Review: Resident Evil 3

This remake series of Resident Evil has been nothing but gold.

This remake series of Resident Evil has been nothing but gold. Reliving the game with modern graphics just reiterates that a solid game is ageless. In the third installment, you take on the role of Jill Valentine as she escapes Racoon City. The city, of course, is littered with zombies and monsters. But for some reason, a super zombie known as Nemesis is after Jill.

RE3 is as much fun as it is terrifying. This is mostly because of Nemesis, a monster of a zombie that will stop at nothing. When I say nothing, I mean it. It is almost impossible to kill Nemesis and that is made very clear early on in the game. He is pretty much the real star of the game, I got butterflies in my stomach each time Jill was being followed around.

This was also a problem, as most other zombies didn’t cut it once I had dealt with Nemesis. All other zombies seemed easy to sidestep or just shoot twice in the head. Sure, some would wake up as you passed them, providing shock value, but nothing compared to the dread of Nemesis.

The main element of the game—surviving with minimum supplies—still applies. So, sometimes sidestepping is better than killing a zombie. There are also lots of puzzles with good rewards.

The story, unfortunately, is not brilliant but it’s not bad either. However, the voice acting and characters in the game are pretty awesome. Capcom has done a good job with the Resident Evil 3 remake and if you are looking for that post-apocalyptic horror fix right now, you can’t go wrong with this.
