Cyberpunk 2077 removes gender: Why you needn’t cry about it being woke

Mass misunderstandings about gender being removed in Cyberpunk 2077 has resulted in allegations of CD Projekt RED catering to the “woke”.

Cyberpunk 2077 is already a massive success thanks to its pre-order sales, but those awaiting the most anticipated game of 2020 have recently had their feathers ruffled by CD Projekt RED removing gender from the character creation suite. This has resulted in allegations of the game pandering to the “woke”.

There’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to Cyberpunk 2077 such as its dense world and remarkable freedom in gameplay. Not only that, but the character creation suite sounds as if it’ll be more extensive than pretty much every other RPG.

Yet, despite how incredible the game promises to be, there’s been a lot of controversy surrounding it. There was a lot of hoopla earlier in the year about it supposedly being transphobic for daring to have an advertisement showing a sexy transgender, and now there’s allegations from the other political spectrum about it catering to the minority who are “woke”.

Cyberpunk 2077 removes gender: What does this mean?

It’s impossible to blame people for being confused about what Cyberpunk 2077 removing gender actually means. After all, CD Projekt RED hasn’t explained their decision all that well, and there’s contradictory statements circling about the internet.

From CD Projekt RED themselves, the studio’s concept artist Marthe Jenkers told the Metro that players will choose a body type instead of gender.

“You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character’ you now choose a body type,” said Jenkers. “Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want.”

“So you choose your body type and we have two voices, one that’s male sounding, one is female sounding. You can mix and match. You can just connect them any way you want. And then we have a lot of extra skin tones and tattoos and hairstyles. So we really want to give people the freedom to make their own character and play the way they want to play.”

The above description sounds pretty straightforward and exciting, but then there are those who have expressed their want to pick either male or female.

Fortunately, it sounds as if you’ll still be able to do just that thanks to a Reddit post.

A user named MakoRuu reportedly messaged CD Projekt RED to clarify the situation, and they received a response saying, “Strict male and female options are still there.”

Another Reddit user messaged CD Projekt RED on Twitter asking if there’ll still be he/she gendered speech, and they received a response saying “no worries”.

Why you needn’t worry about Cyberpunk 2077 being woke

No one should be blamed for expressing their concerns about Cyberpunk 2077 as it shows their passion and excitement for the game.

With that being said, the tantrums thrown about it being “woke” are unnecessary as nothing about the character creation suite will affect them in any capacity.

The description from CD Projekt RED themselves hasn’t helped matters as it suggests that gender choices are completely removed. And this is what has led to the bombardment of allegations about it catering to the minority instead of the masses.

#Cyberpunk2077 romoves gender… god WHY?
U mean, it’s ok to add option to not choose gender,
BUT I WANT TO choose one! Including lefties checkmarks You are excluding your fans!
Don’t pander to stupid #woke sh*t!@CDPROJEKTRED pic.twitter.com/P2HBKrVECp

Sorry but your game is getting a little too “woke” for me. So your getting rid of gender options entirely for like what? .004% of the population so they aren’t offended? Wow so inclusive of you guys! “finger snaps”. Gimme a break

Next up a CDPR is making a RPG game set in the 19th century.
Also CDRP: We don’t want to leave anyone out and we want to include anyone with different views regarding gender, so we will let you choose Body Type.
Please confirm if you doing this only for the lores sake, not for PC

Yet, once you do some digging around on Reddit and other areas of the internet, you quickly realise that CD Projekt RED is honestly catering to everyone instead of a sole group of people.

You can still look, sound and be a male or female in Cyberpunk 2077, but the fact you can also mix and match adds another layer of freedom every other game lacks.

And this should be embraced rather than feared as it will allow players to create the best representation of themselves possible.

Cyberpunk 2077 promises to be an amazing game, and fans should put their trust in CD Projekt RED as they have arguably been the most consumer friendly game developer over the past decade.

Cyberpunk 2077 – Level Designer About Gender and Nudity Options

CD Projekt RED’s Level Designer explained how gender personalization will work in the long-awaited Cyberpunk 2077. The players will create their own character, but its genitals will depend on the selected body type. We also learned some other interesting facts.

During this year’s edition of Tokyo Game Show, the editorial staff of VGC managed to talk to Max Pears, Cyberpunk 2077’s level designer. The developer revealed some details about the personalization of the main character.

During the creation of their avatar, the players will freely mix male and female silhouettes and voices. However, the genitals of the characters will be defined by the selected body type. This will also be shown in the game.

In the game you will be able to romance, and thus, also initiate sexual intercourses. We will not see any censorship in the game, so all intimate parts will be clearly visible. During the game, however, none of the characters will refer to the gender of the protagonist. The main character will always be called simply “V”.

The developer also revealed information that will sadden some of Keanu Reeves’ fans: a romance with Johnny Silverhand will not be possible.

It is worth mentioning that the CD Projekt RED booth at Tokyo Game Show is very popular. Twitter is full of new entries from people who are very enthusiastic about the motorcycle advertising Cyberpunk 2077, including Hideo Kojima and Keanu Reeves.

The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled for April 16, 2020. The game will be coming to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and is planned to be released on Google Stadia streaming platform.

NPCs is not going to refer to you by gender in Cyberpunk 2077

A hot potato: CD Projekt Pink has had a long and amusingly uncomfortable record of accidentally antagonizing the LGBT neighborhood, but now, they’ll be the initial studio to introduce a main title granting gamers whole command around gender with Cyberpunk 2077. In response to criticisms on the E3 2018 gameplay demo and its just one-or-the-other tactic to gender variety, CD Projekt Crimson made the decision to crack gender, voice, and genitalia into 3 individual issues, supplying gamers regulate about their just take on V, the protagonist.

At a the latest job interview with VGC, CDPR level designer Max Pairs described their ambitions with representation, and how they want to meet up with them. “In the genre of Cyberpunk as properly, it asks this sort of deep questions about what it usually means to be human, enable by yourself what it suggests to define your gender. Owning that customization match how you really feel is your illustration of how you feel… it is critical for us and it’s significant to the lore of this earth, as well.”

For starters, NPCs will not have interaction with your character’s gender, so if your V isn’t an individual the developers anticipated when producing the scripts, you will however have the flexibility to engage in like that. “One of the points we have performed to make sure the recreation addresses matters a sure way is a ton of the time NPCs are just going to refer to you as ‘V’, due to the fact you won’t be capable to pick your title. That way it can help people today know that it is their character which is currently being spoken to and also even so you’ve envisioned your V, which is nonetheless your V.”

The original collection web page that has considering the fact that been changed.

“That’s been our target: your version of V is your model as the player and that is how you will be addressed in the recreation,” he concluded. It is a smaller detail but a considerable 1, as romance can be a substantial section of the story of the player chooses. That features non-straight associations, also.

Tragically, nonetheless, there’s no acquiring frisky with Keanu Reeves, who plays Johnny Silverhand. “Keanu performs a very important part in the video game, but as for the alternative to romance him, I really don’t imagine you can,” Pairs explained. I know, I’m just as unhappy as you must be.

In circumstance you missed it, senior principle artist Marthe Jonkers defined the alternatives gamers get to make in an job interview with Metro British isles late last thirty day period. “For occasion, you never decide on your gender any more. You do not decide on, ‘I want to be a woman or male character’ you now opt for a physique style. For the reason that we want you to come to feel absolutely free to develop any character you want.” Genitalia is primarily based on body sort, which, if you play a particular way, you could see on display.

“So you pick your overall body form and we have two voices, 1 which is male-sounding, just one is female sounding. You can combine and match. You can just join them anyway you want. And then we have a large amount of excess skin tones and tattoos and hairstyles. So we definitely want to give people the independence to make their very own character and play the way they want to enjoy.”

CD Projekt Red’s selection is surely a daring one, as developers typically shy absent from this kind of moves offered the toxicity of some players. But eventually, creating a video game developed for each participant to link with need to be the target of each individual studio, and CD Projekt Crimson are carrying out a high-quality job.

“You Don’t Choose Your Gender Anymore” In Cyberpunk 2077

Last time we heard from CD Projekt RED, the studio was still working on customization, in particular with the idea of allowing for more diverse and free character creation in Cyberpunk 2077. It was back at E3 2019, and then we learn that the Polish team has already made huge progress on the matter.

As shared by senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers, the game has completely removed the gender selection when you create a character, meaning that they will only be determined by the sum of the characteristics you want to provide them with.

Jonkers has told Metro GameCentral that “our character creation menu, for instance, compared to the last demo we now give you so many more options,” as “you don’t choose your gender anymore. You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character’ you now choose a body type.”

In the current build, and likely in the game we’ll get to play next year, “you choose your body type, and we have two voices, one that’s male-sounding, one is female sounding. You can mix and match. You can just connect them anyway you want. And then we have a lot of extra skin tones and tattoos and hairstyles.”

It looks some serious progress about a matter where the game had already been much criticized for the way it depicted LGBTQ themes, and it shows CDPR’s efforts to improve on that. Anyway, “at the same time, we’ll tackle difficult issues. It is a cyberpunk world, after all,” so don’t expect them not to come out in the future.

Cyberpunk 2077 is releasing on April 16, 2020, for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, and is “coming soon” on Google Stadia. The Gamescom 2019 demo will be revealed on August 30, so we’re hopefully getting a taste of how the title changed since last year in a few days.

Cyberpunk 2077 Drops Binary Gender Options In Character Creator

CD Projekt Red has faced several controversies with its depiction of transhumanism and gender representation in its upcoming open-world action RPG Cyberpunk 2077. However, the developer is eager to respond to fan feedback and create a more inclusive experience. In this respect, the team has reworked Cyberpunk 2077’s character creator and removed the binary gender options.

“You know, we really want to make a video game that’s really inclusive,” senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers said in an interview with Metro. “Of course, if you tackle certain subjects then you will expect people to have an opinion about it and we respect that. And it’s good that people give us feedback. And our character creation menu, for instance, compared to the last demo we now give you so many more options. For instance, you don’t choose your gender anymore. You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character’ you now choose a body type. Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want.”

Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Explains Why There’s No Character Gender Option Anymore

Here’s why the developers changed the gender option.

    Posted Aug. 29, 2019, 1:32 a.m.

CD Projekt Red is doing away with traditional character gender options in Cyberpunk 2077 to keep with the cyberpunk ethos of the genre. The developers confirmed the latest development in a new interview.

Metro caught up with CD Projekt Red senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers to talk more about the world building in Cyberpunk 2077, and how that manifests in the gameplay. Specifically, Metro asked about gender in Cyberpunk 2077, an area that CD Projekt Red received criticism for in the past.

Jonkers said the developers are working to make Cyberpunk 2077 “really inclusive.” This resulted in gameplay design choices like an expanded character customization menu.

“[O]ur character creation menu, for instance, compared to the last demo we now give you so many more options,” Jonkers said. “For instance, you don’t choose your gender anymore. You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character’ you now choose a body type. Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want.”

CD Projekt Red already revealed that character customization will feature prominently into Cyberpunk 2077, but the developers are opting out of strict binaries for things like gender. Instead players can choose a body type and two voice options, “one that’s male sounding, one is female sounding. You can mix and match. You can just connect them any you want.”

Players will be able to further customize their characters with tattoos, hairstyles, and skin tones.

At E3, some fans wondered how CD Projekt Red would approach gender in Cyberpunk 2077, especially after an in-game ad prominently featured a transgender character. There was also the matter of CD Projekt Red’s history, where the company previously apologizes for making jokes aimed at the transgender community.

However, Jonkers says that the CD Projekt Red development team is very diverse and asks for feedback when it comes to creative decisions such as these. “We always ask for feedback and even when we show these demos, we still ask people to tell us what they think.” A practice CD Projekt Red has kept since the development of The Witcher 3.

The studio announced at Gamescom that Cyberpunk 2077 will be coming to Google Stadia and talked about potential multiplayer modes coming to the game. All the while the developers shared over 100 Cyberpunk 2077 screenshots.

CD Projekt Red is planning a new gameplay reveal for Cyberpunk 2077 at PAX West in a couple days, so check back at IGN for all the latest Cyberpunk 2077 details.

Cyberpunk 2077 Ditches Binary Gender Options In Character Customisation

    Free to choose

    Posted Aug. 28, 2019, 6:58 p.m.

In a recent interview with Metro GameCentral, the game developers behind Cyberpunk 2077 stressed on excluding binary genders for its player-created characters.

Players will be required to select either a male or female gender ‘V’ for their in-game character. There was plenty of criticism behind Cyberpunk 2077’s body modifications and developer Projekt Red has made transphobic jokes in the past, but senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers shows that feedback has been taken positively on board.

She elaborates, “You don’t choose your gender anymore. You don’t choose, “I want to be a female or male character ”, you now choose body types. Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want.”

The character creation system has been changed significantly, and now offers flexible and fluid options for V’s gender identity. “We have two voices, one that’s male sounding, one is female sounding. You can mix and match. You can just connect them any way you want. And then we have a lot of extra skin tones and tattoos and hairstyles . So we really want to give people the freedom to male their own character and play the way they want to play.”

On Metro GameCentrals’ question whether diverse consultants were brought onto the project in light of the controversies, Jonkers explained, “We just want to know what we can improve on because we want to make a really good game and we really want to make a game that everybody is comfortable playing. But at the same time we’ll tackle difficult issues. It is a cyberpunk world after all.”

Cyberpunk 2077 will launch for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on April 2020.

Cyberpunk 2077 removed gender restrictions. over a month ago: Here are all the facts we know about the game.

The biggest news for CD Projekt Red is the removal of gender choices when creating your character. This comes over a month after this change was discussed by Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, quest director of Cyberpunk 2077, in an interview with a Polish news outlet. The interview was translated to English and posted to r/cyberpunkgame sub Reddit. This bit of information flew under the radar as everyone, including myself, were busy reporting on the religious aspects of Cyberpunk 2077. After looking into the current outrage from all sides over the removal of genders I decided to look at my notes on Cyberpunk 2077 and took another look at the translated interview I linked. Right at the very end of the interview was the revelation that genders would not be binary and that your choice of voice would determine how the residents of Night City referred to you. Since the interview was over a month ago things may have changed, so I reached out to CD Projekt Red for confirmation. [As of publication of this article no response was received but we will update the story should that change.]

And what about gender? Are you going to allow a different options of transitioning, which world of the future might offer?

“First of all, we are allowing you to make whatever character you want, without a barrier between male and female attributes. You can pick a body type more typical for males, but with a female face, haircut and voice. Ultimately the type of voice will determine how other characters will refer to you. However for people in Night City issues like that are indeed of much smaller importance.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release on April 16th, 2020, for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The Google Stadia version will launch some time in the same year, more details on that date are expected to be announced soon. We also know that Keanu Reeves will lend his likeness and voice to the character Johnny Silverhand. Johnny is a rocker/activist in addition to being your companion in Night City. Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz said in the linked interview that the relationship between Johnny and the player character will be shaped by the players choices and interactions with Johnny.

In the Cyberpunk 2077 – Official Dev Diary: Stadia Connect video I embedded above the developers note that Cyberpunk 2077 will have what Senior Level Designer Miles Tost calls “open ended gameplay.” That is to say the game will have non linear story telling, non linear world exploration, and non linear game play. This non linear gameplay will allow you to play your character in whatever manner you want. From a stealthy assassin type to a big burly brawler, the choice is yours as to how you want the game to unfold.

Art Director Kasia Redesiuk promises there will be many scenes that people will have very strong feeling about. Her hope is the game will show, in an exaggerated way, things that are already happening in our world. She hopes this will help us to make our future better than the bleak future of Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 will include gender-free character creation and queer relationships

    18:41 2nd September 2019 by Daniel Megarry

“We really want to make a video game that’s really inclusive.”

The creators behind highly-anticipated video game Cyberpunk 2077 have confirmed they’re doing away with traditional gender options for characters in the game as part of their attempt to be more inclusive for players.

Addressing previous controversies over the portrayal of gender and trans issues in their games, Metro asked Cyberpunk 2077’s senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers if they’ve changed their approach to diversity.

“We really want to make a video game that’s really inclusive. Of course, if you tackle certain subjects then you will expect people to have an opinion about it and we respect that,” they said.

“It’s good that people give us feedback. And our character creation menu, for instance, compared to the last demo we now give you so many more options.

“For instance, you don’t choose your gender anymore. You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character’ you now choose a body type. Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want.

“So you choose your body type and we have two voices, one that’s male sounding, one is female sounding. You can mix and match. You can just connect them any way you want.

“And then we have a lot of extra skin tones and tattoos and hairstyles. So we really want to give people the freedom to make their own character and play the way they want to play.”

In a 2018 interview with Eurogamer, quest designer Patrick Mills revealed that the game will feature diverse relationships – both casual and long-term – with non-playable characters being straight, gay or bisexual.

It will be interesting to see what – if any – impact the removal of traditional genders for the player’s character will have on the opportunity for relationships in the finished game.

Earlier this year, CD Projekt Red faced accusations of transphobia over an advert that appeared in a gameplay screenshot from Cyberpunk 2077.

The advert, which promoted a soft drink called ChroManticore, featured a female figure with a clear outline of a penis in their clothing alongside a slogan encouraging consumers to “mix it up” and enjoy “16 flavours you’d love to mix”.

Speaking to Polygon about the controversy, art director Kasia Redesiuk said the world of Cyberpunk 2077 includes many people who are gender-nonconforming and that their likeness is utilised by corporations to sell products.

“I would say it was never the intention to offend anyone. However, with this image of an oversexualized person, we did want to show how oversexualization of people is bad. And that’s it,” they explained.

“I think that sexy bodies are sexy. Full disclosure: I love female bodies. I love male bodies. I love bodies in between. This is who I am. However, I hate it when it’s used commercially.

“And that’s exactly what we want to show by doing this exactly, by showing how big corporations use people’s bodies against them.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is set for release on PS4, Xbox One and Windows on 16 April, 2020.

Cyberpunk 2077 Doesn’t Have Gender Options Anymore

Cyberpunk 2077 Aims to Be More Inclusive to All Players

The character customization menus in the upcoming open-world RPG Cyberpunk 2077 won’t include an option to pick a gender, according to a recent interview with the game’s senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers.

CD Projekt RED has previously expressed interest in letting players create trans or non-binary characters in Cyberpunk 2077 but the studio has also ran into some controversy regarding an in-game advert that appeared to depict a transgender woman.

Jonkers told Metro GameCentral that CD Projekt RED “really want to make a video game that’s really inclusive.” So when the developer team received criticism about the gender options for character customization not being inclusive enough, the developers made a change.

“For instance, you don’t choose your gender anymore,” Jonkers explained. “You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character’ you now choose a body type. Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want.”

“So you choose your body type and we have two voices, one that’s male sounding, one is female sounding,” Jonkers also said. “You can mix and match. You can just connect them any way you want. And then we have a lot of extra skin tones and tattoos and hairstyles. So we really want to give people the freedom to make their own character and play the way they want to play.”

Cyberpunk 2077 Ditches Traditional Gender And Class Roles

Cyberpunk 2077 is really in the forefront as they are ditching the traditional male and female characters for a more nonbinary gender option. This new option will let players mix and match however they want.

Recently it was announced that CD Projekt RED had been striving to make the Cyberpunk 2077 more inclusive for everyone. This means that more players can create a character as per their liking and lifestyle and in an image of themselves.

Senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers said, “You don’t choose your gender anymore. You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character’ you now choose a body type. Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want. So you choose your body type and we have two voices, one that’s male sounding, one is female sounding. You can mix and match. You can just connect them any way you want. And then we have a lot of extra skin tones and tattoos and hairstyles. So we really want to give people the freedom to make their own character and play the way they want to play.”

Jonkers also said that they listened to the community feedback and after consulting with a staff which has people from all over the world they took this decision like trans representation.

Jonkers added, “We just wanna know what we can improve on because we want to make a really good game and we really wanna make a game that everybody is comfortable playing. But at the same time we’ll tackle difficult issues. It is a cyberpunk world after all.”

Not only this Cyberpunk 2077 is also ditching the traditional class system which allows players to select a certain type of character for a more open to all “fluid class system” so that players can explore and immerse themselves as deeply as they wish.

Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled to be released on 16th April 2020 for PC, Xbox One and PS4.

Sensationalists Complain About No Non-Binary Gender Options in Cyberpunk 2077, “Who Freaking Cares” Says Reddit

    Share

Some think gender is a spectrum and while no movement or complain came from the LGBTQ community, certain publications like to stir things up. Apparently, someone over at VGR.com and a couple of other websites would like to see non-binary gender options in CD Projekt RED‘s Cyberpunk 2077.

While the inclusion of such an option is welcomed, criticising CD Projekt RED isn’t the way to go. Gender spectrum, non-binary are relatively new concepts to the gaming industry and it would take some time before their inclusion is normalized but for any feature to be a part of a video game, it should first make sense, fit the design, story elements etc. Pressuring a developer with criticism won’t get you anywhere.

Video games as a platform must remain non-political and we should fight for it. Cyberpunk 2077 developer has already stated it is too early to say what will and what won’t make it to the final game. And to their credit, they have looked into this feature.

The footage we saw at E3 was pre-alpha which means lots of changes will be made but changes will and should be based on community feedback, and whether or not they fit the game. And there isn’t much support right now for non-binary gender options for Cyberpunk 2077, judging by community feedback. Here are some of the comments from Reddit:

“Fkn sjw garbage, get that shit outta here”

“Can we ban vgr.com please? They put out articles for every single sentence the devs said in interviews. They added nothing new to what we already knew by just reading off a compiled list.”

“I am active in the LGBT community, bisexual and gender fluid.”

“And I’d like to say, I don’t give a single shit. and no one else should.”

“Its just click-bait, look at OP’s history.”

“And it’ll be better for the game if the devs don’t spend the resources even thinking about such triviality. Depending on how you look at the subject of sex vs gender, non-binary genders either don’t make any sense or are completely irrelevant and useless, with the only purpose of making people, that are demanding special pronouns, feel special. It’s almost as if they want to have nobility treatment: I am Demihoe Riley Blazkowicz, my shield is a circle with a confused question mark pointing southwest, you may refer to me using a Huehue pronoun.”

“Yeah uh….other than some dialog options how would you even implement that…ya either got lady parts or dude parts. Check a box and at some point in the game someone references it? Waste of dev time. I doubt it makes it in. I’m sure there will be references somewhere in the game but as far as for your character seems kinda pointless to make a big deal out of it. Not quite sure if it’s even part of the original game.”

The comment about its implementation is interesting to me because if gender is a spectrum, how can a spectrum be implemented properly in a video game? Someone somewhere will feel left out no matter what you do.

But CD Projekt RED is the only one capable of pulling it off if they decide to add this to the game. However, it can make things very complicated for a development that’s already neck deep.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Character Creator Will Include Nonbinary Gender Options

Among the many cool things we saw about Cyberpunk 2077 is its character creation tool, which allows you customize your character’s look and stats, even allowing you to modify their street cred. However, the demo we saw this week showed only two cosmetic renditions of the character, one male and one female with different skill builds. CD Projekt Red has confirmed the creation tool will be much more diverse than this in the final version of the game, especially when it comes to physical appearance and gender.

For context, while Cyberpunk 2077 was being shown off at E3, a controversy regarding a risque in-game ad depicting a transgender character emerged, with some taking offense to how the ad fetishized or dehumanized trans people.

Speaking with Polygon, CDPR art director Kasia Redesiuk said the ad is meant to be dystopian satire, and the company’s goal is to create more acceptance for trans people and those with non-binary genders.

Then, speaking with Gamasutra, quest director Mataeusz Tomaszkiewicz confirmed the character creation tool within Cyberpunk 2077 would reflect this attitude. “One of the things we want to do in the final game (which we couldn’t show in the demo yet, because as you mentioned it’s a work in progress) is to give the players as many options of customization in the beginning of the game as we can,” he said. “For example, we want to do this thing where, as you create your character, after you choose the body type, you can, for example, use physical traits as you build your face that could be assigned to a man or a woman.”

Tomaszkiewicz then confirmed this would include non-binary options as well. “The idea is to mix all of those [options] up, to give them to the players, as they would like to build it,” he explained. “Same goes for the voice. We wanted to separate this out, so the players can choose it freely.” He also mentioned this attitude would also extend to how characters are depicted in the game itself. “We are paying a lot of attention to it, we do not want anyone to feel like we are neglecting this, or treating it wrongly.”

CD Projekt Red Confirms No More Binary Gender Options for Cyberpunk 2077

Following some criticism, Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has confirmed the game will no longer have players choosing their characters’ gender.

With all the Cyberpunk 2077 news from Gamescom, senior concept artist Barthe Jonkers has confirmed the game’s character creation tool has received some big updates.

“And our character creation menu, compared to the last demo, we now give you so many more options,” says Jonkers. “For instance, you don’t choose a gender anymore. You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character’ you now choose a body type. Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want.”

Jonkers also confirms the game will let players customize their character’s skin tone, hairstyle, tattoos, and style choices among other changes. Additionally, the character customizer lets players mix and match male and female voice options.

“We just wanna know what we can improve on because we want to make a really good game and we really wanna make a game that everyone is comfortable playing,” continues Jonkers. “But at the same time, we’ll tackle difficult issues. It is a cyberpunk world after all.”

Recently, CD Projekt Red has discussed things such as new game plus and multiplayer modes possibly coming to CyberPunk 2077. Additionally, they’ve talked about how the game will have a smaller map compared to The Witcher 3, but it’ll be denser. For players interested in checking the game out, CD Projekt Red will be hosting a live stream this Friday where they’ll show off 15 minutes of gameplay.
