Sexuality and Romance in Cyberpunk 2077

  • You will be able to define your own sexuality, whether gay, straight, or bi. (For those concerned about the gameplay trailer where female V woke up next to a male joyboy, not to worry, that’s not mandatory.)
  • It is unsure as to whether or not we can play an asexual character.
  • NPC sexuality will be varied. Some romances will be locked out depending on Vs gender.
  • You will choose V’s body type, genitals, and voice type all separately. For instance, you can have V appear and sound to be male but have female genitals.
  • There will be full-frontal nudity and explicit sex scenes involving V from the first person.
  • Romance options will far exceed the amount Geralt had available in The Witcher 3 according to Patrick Mills.
  • There will be the option for both one-night stands and long term romance.
  • One-night stands can be with joyboys/girls (Cyberpunk’s version of prostitutes that can be hired from Vs apartment and from vending machines) or NPCs you can meet in-world.
  • Most long term romances will include a specific quest for the NPC that V is romancing, similar to Triss and Yennifer’s in The Witcher 3.
  • Some NPCs will not be romanceable based on your decisions as well as how you treat them.
  • You will be able to cheat on partners with repercussions, again, similar to Triss and Yennifer.
  • It’s been hinted that some NPCs will be willing to have an open/poly relationship.
  • Johnny Silverhand will not be a romance option.

The Witcher developer CD Projekt RED are finally starting to reveal more about their next role-playing game, Cyberpunk 2077. It’s set to be a decidedly different experience from their fantasy games, and early trailers already have us itching to venture into its world.

While there’s still more questions than answers regarding the game, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about it after it’s grand unveiling at E3 this week. Here are 7 reasons why Cyberpunk 2077 will blow you away.

1. It’s CD Projekt RED’s spin on first person games

Excitingly, Cyberpunk 2077 will play decidedly different from the developer’s past titles. This will be a first-person shooter, but they aren’t completely getting away from the role-playing elements that have defined their previous work.

Players can use bullet time to slow down combat, and specialized bullets can be equipped that bounce off walls and into enemies. It’s bound to be a different type of shooter, but one that’s decidedly CD Projekt RED.

2. Customize Your Hero

V won’t be your standard role-playing game protagonist. The mercenary can be completely customized by the player. Everything from the character’s gender to their body type and class will be up to you. This allows players to potentially create a cyberpunk version of themselves or produce their wildest creation. V isn’t so much a creation of CD Projekt RED, but of the player themselves.

3. Night City is an incredible open-world

Night City, California is a sprawling metropolis that is comprised of six different areas: City Center, Watson, Westbrook, Heywood, Pacifica, and Santo Domingo. Each of the different locales have a distinct look and feel that players will have to get a handle on. Exploration is handled both on-foot and in vehicles. Players can take advantage of future technology by letting autonomous cars drive from one area to another so they can focus on combat.

4. Your choices will matter

Storytelling has always been one of CD Projekt RED’s strong suits, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt showcased how impressively the developer can handle branching storylines. They’ll be attempting to do the same with Cyberpunk 2077, but on an even greater scale. The studio has confirmed that there will be multiple endings and different story outcomes to experience. Player choice will play a vital role throughout the game, and it will ensure that no two playthroughs will be exactly the same.

5. Get implants to learn new skills and languages

While plenty of role-playing games have skill trees with no in-game explanation, Cyberpunk 2077 will have a good explanation for V to learn new abilities over the course of the game. These additional skills will come in the form of cybernetic implants that can be purchased. Players can use them to decipher languages that NPCs speak. The better the implant, the more accurate the translations will be.

6. Different types of damage to avoid and inflict

Combat will be a highly strategic affair in Cyberpunk 2077. One major aspect that players will have to deal with is the four types of damage that need to be avoided and afflicted: physical, thermal, EMP, and chemical. Players can identify which enemies do what type of damage by using their scanning ability. This becomes a core part of combat that players will have to master if they wish to be successful.

7. There’ll be plenty of post-release support

Hidden within the recent E3 2018 trailer was the announcement that Cyberpunk 2077 will follow The Witcher 3’s footsteps in terms of downloadable content and post-launch support. That fantasy RPG wound up receiving 16 free DLC packs, ranging from alternative character looks to a new game plus mode. Few studios support their games this ardently, and it’s certain that players will be going back to Cyberpunk 2077 for months after release.

Cyberpunk 2077 Might Let Players Change The Protagonist’s Name

While The Witcher was a story that was shaped by players’ choices, it was, at the end of the day, very much Geralt’s story. Things are changing with CD Projekt RED’s next game, Cyberpunk 2077. Though the protagonist, V, won’t be as much of a blank slate of a protagonist as we see in other games like Dragon Quest and The Legend of Zelda, the developers want this to be your story completely.

We already know that we can change the appearance of V to some extent, in spite of the game being first person, while we also know that V’s personality and story can change considerably based on your choices. And now, it seems like we might even be able to change V’s name.

In a tweet on the official Cyberpunk 2077 account responding to a question by a fan, CDPR said that the character’s name “as of now” is V, but whether or not that’s just a street name or the actual name, and whether or not the game will allow players to change it, is something they haven’t decided for sure yet. This very much seems to be a Mass Effect situation, where players could shape several aspects of Commander Shepard’s character – including his origins, his first name, and his appearance – and shape his story as they saw fit, in spite of him being much more than a silent blank slate character.

Cyberpunk 2077 launches for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC, though a release date hasn’t been announced as of yet.

As for now the character’s name is V, but this is something we’re still debating.


Grimes’ Cyberpunk 2077 character should come with a trigger warning

Grimes spoiled everything there is to know about her cybernetic pop star from the upcoming game.

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Claire “Grimes” Boucher has a role in CD Projekt Red’s much-hyped Cyberpunk 2077, and she may have spoiled everything there is to know about her character more than half a year before the game is released.

In a Saturday livestream to promote her new album, Miss Anthropocene, Grimes let slip a few details about the character she’s playing in Cyberpunk 2077. She previously only teased the character, who is some kind of cyborg pop star, in a December 2019 tweet. The character’s background story, however, now seems so much darker than we could’ve possibly imagined.

Even though the livestream has since been taken down, Reddit user Ros96 transcribed what Grimes said about her role in the game, revealing some critical details about a character named Lizzy Wizzy.

Spoilers ahead that also reference suicide.

“I play a pop star who committed suicide on stage,” Grimes said, “and they had to quickly come and perform emergency surgery and replace her whole body with cybernetics while she was dead for an hour and then she finished the show as a cyborg.” Grimes called it “one of the greatest pieces of performance art ever made” and said that Cyberpunk 2077 “is going to be fucking good” based on her watching someone play an hour of the game.

Grimes’ character offers an interesting examination at the transhumanist ideas often present in cyberpunk fiction where the human mind can live on with a cybernetic body. It remains to be seen if players will experience her character’s dramatic, grisly transformation directly by playing it out in-game or if this is just backstory to her character that happened before the game takes place. Either way, it’s still incredibly dark. A key facet of the game will see players upgrade their body with various kinds of cybernetic enhancements, and in some cases, entire human bodies are replaced with robotic parts. That seems to be the case for Lizzy Dizzy based on the only image released of her.

Polygon reports that Lizzy is “the controversial frontwoman for the band Lizzy Wizzy and the Metadwarves,” so we also know that she’s not a one-woman act, and the outlet also noticed that “Death at Lizzy Wizzy Concert” popped up as a headline in the original E3 2018 demo. This seems to imply that this grisly event happens during the game but perhaps off-camera.

With Grimes lackadaisically telling us just about everything there is to know about her character, that means we know more about Lizzy Wizzy than anyone else from Cyberpunk 2077, even more than Keanu Reeves’ beloved cyborg. Developer CD Projekt Red is being fairly secretive about specific story details for the new game, and the release date delay from April to September has only increased anticipation and hype for the title.

Grimes is also contributing to the game’s soundtrack alongside the likes of Run the Jewels, Refused, ASAP Rocky, Gazelle Twin, Ilan Rubin, Richard Devine, Nina Kraviz, Deadly Hunta, Rat Boy, and Tina Guo. It seems likely that Grimes’ track might be presented in-game as Lizzy Dizzy’s, but that remains to be seen.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be release on September 17, 2020.

Cyberpunk 2077: What To Expect From The Three Starting Origins

We take a look at the three starting origins of Cyberpunk 2077 and how they could affect your personal story.

As it has been revealed that players will select from three distinct origin stories for their characters in Cyberpunk 2077, it is time to madly speculate about exactly what kind of effect these origins will have. They’re the Nomad, Corpo, or Street Kid, and they could impact the overall story and gameplay farther down the narrative line.

Lead quest designer Pawel Sasko recently informed VG247 each choice will provide both a unique prologue to each character and a different starting location and background. Before diving into the potential of each individual, we should consider other sources that feel similar in theme and aesthetic look to the upcoming game, namely Cyberpunk 2020, a role-playing game inspired by Hardwired, a novel by Walter Jon Williams.

Fans of the RPG likely already recognize how similar the old game feels to the upcoming release of Cyberpunk 2077: both emphasize combat that uses high-tech weaponry and the physical augmentation of one’s body with cybernetics, and both are set among the gritty backdrop of a city written from the perspective of a futuristic, dystopian, dark-film noir setting.

In the RPG it is skills rather than levels that matter to a character, and the same could be said of the upcoming game. Does it mean anything if a character is level 5 or level 50? Perhaps, but what is far more important is going to come down to where you have focused the development of your skills, or the augmentation of your body.

With that in mind, what skills could a Nomad develop or start off with, that the other two may not?


The very name implies an individual with no stable location to call home, nor perhaps even a family to associate with. They may be a wanderer, moving from place to place in an effort to survive.

Such an individual in the futuristic world of the game may be an expert at a skill we will call Scavenging, whereby nothing is left to go to waste, and everything has a purpose. This would allow them to loot more from their opponents once defeated, or simply have an easier time crafting items of use. They could also have augmentations specifically meant to survive the harsh conditions of life outside a city, particularly if the world has become warmer, or more of a wasteland like the Fallout series.

Perhaps then the augmentations could take the form of utility rather than combat like we have seen in the game trailers so far. Imagine the functionality of a “Stillsuit” in Dune by Frank Herbert, designed to preserve the moisture of a body in a place where water is scarce and every drop counts. In this sense, augmentations for combat would be useless when you struggle to survive against nature.

Since we know little of the world in Cyberpunk 2077, there is also a distinct possibility that Normads are fierce Road Warriors ala Mad Max, not so much moving around out of necessity but because of an unquenchable desire to be on the road. This of course would call for a cosmetic variation of Mel Gibson’s original Road Warrior outfit!


A Corpo brings to mind at once an image of a young, slick looking individual with the hottest cybernetic augmentations on their bodies, but highly indebted to the corporate Masters who have footed the bill in exchange for their perpetual service contracts.

One cannot have a futuristic world without corporations having a massive influence over all things political (much like our current reality), and so to have corporations arming scores of young people with the goal of having their own private force is perfectly believable.

For those who have seen, read, or listened to Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (narrated by Wil Wheaton), one need only recall the Sixers, or Sux0rz, the section of IOI who were indebted workers given a range of outstanding and expensive items in the virtual world at the cost of their freedom, and any chance of finding the Easter Egg.

So, what would it take for one of those Corporate tools to be thrust into the story of Cyberpunk 2077? Well, if Ready Player One, Repo Men, Elysium, Gattaca, Ghost in the Shell, and a slew of others are any indication, our Corpo character might simply decide that the life of a corporate tool is not for them, incurring the wrath of a former employer who likely has a financial claim to some expensive body parts that have been augmented.

Street Kid

It seems fair to assume that “Street Kid” is probably not the finalized name for this individual, but it is probably not Disney’s Aladdin either. However, the theme would fit perfectly in Cyberpunk 2077.

Our character could be an orphan, or a runaway, one who has come to know every street and alleyway of their city and has survived and thrived in its harsh environment. Their augments may be patchwork, or largely stolen, or perhaps they are part of a communal “family” of street folk who work to survive and take what they can.

In this sense, while the Nomad may be a wandering soul, and the Corpo may be a on the run from Corporate debtors, the Street Kid may be an integral part of the living organization which is the city, right at home in the slums.

How Will These Three Stories Come Together?

More importantly, will these distinct origins have any real effect on the game past the initial prologue? If not, it will drastically undermine the importance of selecting a background, and hopefully the game will not feel as the Mass Effect series did towards its end, where so many choices seemed to cascade into a single ending, lacking any real meaning in the process by which we arrived there.

For now, we can only speculate about what these three stories will bring, and what they will allow us to do as players later in the game, but the various options available are enough to keep us excited for the release of the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release on April 16, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
