Cyberpunk 2077 Preview: When Fallout Meets Blade Runner

Last updated on August 16th, 2018

W e were fortunate enough this E3 2018 to go and see the game that everyone is talking about, Cyberpunk 2077, which is being produced by the Witcher developer CD Projekt Red. No public gameplay was revealed this year, so you can imagine our excitement at getting a behind closed doors view of things to come. If you’re a fan of games like Fallout 4, Metro or Mass Effect, then Cyberpunk 2077 should interest you, if not at the very least, intrigue you.

Cyberpunk 2077 Preview

Genre: First Person, Open World RPG
Developed by: CD Projekt Red
Published by: CD Projekt Red
Release date: TBA
Platforms: PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One
Website: https://www.cyberpunk.net

Based off the 1988 table top game, Cyberpunk 2077 is set in an alternate time-line dystopian future where the United States is in pieces and more or less governed by large corporations. Crime, violence, promiscuity and poverty are rampant, and it has become clear that the American Dream is no longer attainable. People must look out for themselves and cannot rely upon anyone to help them in this time of anarchy and apathy.

A mercenary, you are hired to take on some of the most dangerous jobs in the area; stealing, seducing, coercing and killing your way to success if necessary. In Cyberpunk 2077 there is no shame, and you as a player are free to help others, or be that badass mother***er that you’ve always dreamed. The game is intended for mature audiences and there is tons and tons of cursing, gore and nudity. Be warned! If that’s not your thing, then you will absolutely not like this game!

Your character, your look, your choices!

Cyberpunk 2077 Features

  • A robust character creator will allow players to choose V’s gender, visual appearance, character class, as well as historical background — all of which may influence the shape of the game.
  • Dozens of hours of main story arc quests, and many more of additional activities.
  • Interactive dialogue system
  • Choices and consequences: players will face difficult decisions that will ripple through the entire game.

Cyberpunk 2077 Gameplay

Cyberpunk 2077 is completely first person, except when you are driving around in one of the game’s 100+ vehicles. Fallout players will feel at home here, as the gameplay is somewhat similar, with its own special look and feel of course. For instance, players will use implants to further enhance their capabilities, allowing them to see further, climb walls, infect enemies and more. You can also slow time while in combat, giving that Matrix feeling while you dodge bullets and shoot people in the groin in slow motion.

Players will be able to fully customize their character during creation, picking such things as Race, Eye color, hair color, body type, skin tone, and gender. Many of the decisions made here will affect the player later on and may create or remove various opportunities. Things like Background may make certain people more or less friendly, and you may have additional dialogue options, not unlike Larian Studios’ game: Divinity Original Sin 2.

The premise of Cyberpunk 2077 is simple really. Complete activities and quests to gain money and reputation. Buy new Implants, Weapons and Armor to become more powerful. Join different factions and rise through the ranks, gaining Street Credibility along the way. Fight, negotiate, bribe, lie, steal and cheat your way to whatever outcome you desire along the way. All while visiting the brothels, Implant doctors, traders, hotels, nightclubs and a future full of sin.

Purchases Accessories and Implants

Cyberpunk 2077 Setting

The fictional dystopian city reminds me a lot of the 1982 movie Blade Runner or even the recent Neflix tv show Altered Carbon. Both modern and advanced technology coexist to make a sci-fi setting that is not too unbelievable for the not so distant future. Energy weapons, cybernetic implants, space cars, and more create and interesting atmosphere and setting for a game, that isn’t full blown sci-fi, like Mass Effect.

People live in large complexes called “mega-buildings” that have their own sustained economy, including shops, police, housing, bars and strip clubs. The currency is called “Eddies” which is a nickname for the Euro Dollar. There is a gaping disparity between the rich and the poor in the completely bureaucratic driven economy where money equals power. It would be like if Google, Apple and Amazon got together and purchased everything, and then you had to live with whatever they allowed you to have.

Cyberpunk 2077 Final Thoughts

Cyberpunk 2077 is an RPG that let’s players cut loose in whatever manner they wish, in an almost over the top kind of way. Nudity, violence, sex and profanity fill the story driven game at every turn. Almost so much so in fact that it may put off some consumers from purchasing the title. However, if you can get past that aspect, or it’s simply your cup of tea, you’ll find an RPG that many players have been dreaming of for a long time.

If there is one word I would use to describe the game it would be “freedom”.

The player is simply free to do what he or she wishes inside the framework of the game, and often it’s things that you would never do in real life. From driving through shopping malls, to blowing the brains out of the guy who spit in your face, or seducing that hot stripper you saw at the night club, the game will attempt to unleash your emotions in a way few games can. CD Projekt Red has made a bold move by creating a game that pushes the boundaries of what is considered acceptable by today’s gaming standards, and I for one think they’ll actually pull it off with flying colors.

Mini-games in Cyberpunk 2077 Cyberpunk 2077 guide, walkthrough

Mini-games are small activities that you will encounter while traveling around the world of Cyberpunk 2077. Thanks to them, you can develop your character, skills, and train in the mechanics offered in this game.

Races

Let’s start with the most obvious mini-game. Car racing can give you not only money and experience points but also a lot of fun. There are several cars that you can drive in a race.

Fights

Another game that will allow you to develop the skills of both your character hero and yours as the player. Thanks to it you will be able to train your punches.

Shooting gallery

Weapons in Cyberpunk 2077 play a very important role. In the game, you can find -. You can test these weapons in a shooting range.

Hacking

Hacking in Cyberpunk 2077 will be presented in the form of a mini-game. This means that a lot depends on us, not on our experience.

As for the impact of the development of this skill on the hero, you will be able to open increasingly challenging locks and hack more interesting elements of the environment.

A hacking mini-game can consist, for example, of finding the correct character strings associated with the various commands displayed on the screen. They can be used, for example, to access cameras or encrypted data.

Will Cyberpunk 2077 feature Gwent?

No. The game won’t feature Gwent nor any similar card game. This information was officially confirmed by the game’s developers.

The speculations about Cyberpunk 2077 featuring Android: Netrunner are therefore false.

World map and basic information | Cyberpunk 2077 Cyberpunk 2077 guide, walkthrough

This page of our Cyberpunk 2077 guide contains world maps (Night City map, Night City sewers map) as well as basic data regarding the map, secrets, and districts found in the game. Our world will be constantly updated with new information will appear.

Night City map – the city’s grounds

The above picture shows a preview of Cyberpunk 2077’s world map. It comes from the cover of the deluxe edition of World of Cyberpunk 2077, so it shouldn’t be considered as the final version of the Night City map. It is very likely that the cover picture doesn’t include some areas, such as the northern edge of the city or the Badlands around Night City. It also doesn’t show the metro network (see the picture below).

The important information is that Cyberpunk 2077 allows players to explore many buildings of Night City – some of them will be rather extensive offering multiple floors. This should greatly increase the time spent on the game – you don’t have to worry that you will explore all locations within the first few hours.

Night City map – the subway tunnels

The above image shows the map of the subway tunnels in Night City. This picture appeared in one of the trailers for Cyberpunk 2077. As you can see, this is a very extensive network, and we can assume that players will spend some time underground exploring new locations, shelters, rooms with loot or unique transitions to areas located on the surface.

Where does the action of the game takes place?

The game takes place in a fictional city called Night City. It is a metropolis located between Los Angeles and San Francisco, in the state of California.

How big is the world in the game?

The world map in Cyberpunk 2077 will likely be smaller from that of The Witcher 3, which offered areas of about 46 square kilometers. However, there are a few important things to note here:

  1. In The Witcher 3, most of the map is occupied by forests, glades, mountains or ponds. In Cyberpunk 2077, the majority of the map consists of one big metropolis, where all the places that we can explore are close to each other.
  2. The world map in The Witcher 3 was mostly flat, which meant that we rarely explored multi-level locations. In Cyberpunk 2077, the authors paid great attention to verticality. We can enter many buildings found in the city and explore their different floors.
  3. The Witcher 3 has dungeons that aren’t connect directly to each other. Cyberpunk 2077 will feature an expanded network of subway tunnels running beneath Night City. It is highly probable that exploring the entire subway network will take us a lot of time.

How many neighborhoods are in the game?

The city is divided into 6 districts: City Center, Watson, Westbrook, Heywood, Pacifica and Santo Domingo. Moreover, the city is surrounded by Badlands which can be visited during the game.

You can visit the whole city from the beginning of the game.

The world of the game is freely and completely accessible from the beginning of the game. However, remember that the game does not offer level-scaling. This means that if you enter a high-level location, the enemies can turn out to be too powerful, killing with a single shot/attack.

Is it possible to enter all locations?

No, the game will have locations that aren’t available by default. To explore them we may have to, for example, start or complete a specific quest.

What happens when you reach the edge of the world map?

Cyberpunk 2077 will, unfortunately, have a mechanism similar to that from The Witcher 3 where the hero gets moved back after they reach the edges of the world map. The game will also display information that this is the end of the world map.

Ways of traveling around the world

You can move on foot, by car, motorcycle, or use a fast travel option. Water vehicles or planes are not usable (despite some missions).

Public transportation

Cyberpunk 2077 will offer access to taxis and Uber drivers. Thanks to them, we will be able to make our way through the city.

Quests – Basic info | Cyberpunk 2077 Walkthrough Cyberpunk 2077 guide, walkthrough

This page of our Cyberpunk 2077 guide contains basic information about missions and our walkthroughs. This part of the guide will tell you how the tasks work and how to acquire them. In the nearest future, this section will receive updates regarding the available quests.

Are the tasks divided into side quests and story quests?

Quests in Cyberpunk 2077 are divided into main and side missions, though the differences are less obvious than in many other RPGs. The quests won’t be built on the principle of simple paths branching out with choices that don’t affect each other directly. Instead, we will get something like a main thread, from which individual branches will depart and split into subsequent branches. Some branches can connect with each other and overlap thus leading to different closures.

Can you fail a quest?

You can fail a section or a whole quest, this affects the story and your relations with encountered characters.

Are the quests performed in one specific way?

No. Missions can be completed in a variety of ways. You can find a different route to your objective, kill opponents silently or engage in an all-out firefight. Our Cyberpunk 2077 guide contains all available paths for every task.

How to unlock missions?

To encounter mission givers and activities, you need to explore the world of the game. This means that some activities can lead to unlocking additional tasks.

The tasks are received from various characters encountered during the game, or through SMS.

Does the game contain notice boards?

No, the game does not contain any notice boards similar to those encountered in The Witcher 3.

Can I finish the game without completing all side quests?

As can easily be imagined, yes. However, you’ll miss out on a lot of content prepared by the developers. In addition, skipping additional quests can slow down the development of the character, making later story missions more difficult.

Unique dialog options

During the meetings with NPC, you can notice some unique dialog options. They fall into three main categories:

  1. Unique options associated with the selected origin (for example, Street Kid). They can appear in conversations in which, for example, the hero can demonstrate their knowledge of the topic or detect that the interlocutor is trying to trick them.
  2. Unique options require you to make a decision within a given time limit. If you don’t choose this option in time, V can decide how to behave on their own, and that choice doesn’t necessarily have to appeal to you. It is worth noting that even with “normal” dialogue options, the lack of a quick answer can visibly irritate the interlocutor.
  3. Unique options related to the use of objects from the environment (the spot where the conversation takes place). They can influence the outcome of a given meeting.

Cyberpunk 2077: 48 minute gameplay walkthrough published

Add to My Vault:

At Gamecom last week there were disappointingly few extra details forthcoming regarding CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 game. At E3, in June, the public was only allowed to see a short minute and a half trailer video. Nevertheless, this video was hugely popular and thoroughly sliced and diced by journalists and enthusiasts for news and clues about the upcoming game. Later in June we were interested to find out the E3 demo PC’s specs too.

A few hours ago, in the wake of a head-scratching Twitch ‘data transmission’ feed of what looked like random text, CDPR has at last shared the Cyberpunk 2077: 48 minute gameplay walkthrough that select gaming journalists saw at E3 2018 (or at least very similar). Before you watch the video, CDPR wants to remind you that this is a work in progress and everything you see in this journey through Night City, could very well change.

“Disclaimer: this video was recorded in 1080p and upscaled to 4k to utilise Youtube’s higher bitrate for 4k videos.”

Above you will see a job undertaken by V, from start to finish. In this video the player starts by customising V as a female character, and it is explained that you don’t choose an RPG class, as classes are fluid in this game. We then go into a mission, which is said to be an early one in the game’s story. In brief, V and her sidekick Jackie will attempt to rescue a target individual. They investigate criminal ‘scavengers’ that appear to be killing people to harvest their implants for the black market. Cue gritty first person NSFW action in a dilapidated building in Night City.

There are lots of gameplay details revealed as the 48 minutes progress and the video is well worth a look if you have been intrigued by the development story and the promise of Cyberpunk 2077.

The video contained this ‘secret frame’

If you have digested the above video and are keen to start playing Cyberpunk 2077 we still don’t have any firm release schedule. However you might be heartened to know that the “entire game is playable from start to finish,” according to a dev interview shared by Engadget last week. Work still needs to be done on assets, play testing and (of course) bug fixes but the team have reached the crucial playability milestone.

‘Cyberpunk 2077’ is one of the most anticipated video games of 2020, and it just got hit with a major delay — here’s what the game is all about

  • The game developer behind the acclaimed “Witcher” series has been working on its next major video game: “Cyberpunk 2077.”
  • At E3 2019, actor Keanu Reeves — who will voice a role in the game — announced “Cyberpunk 2077” would be released April 16, 2020.
  • But this Thursday, the studio announced a major delay: The game will now launch on September 17, 2020.
  • We’ve broken down trailers and news around “Cyberpunk 2077” to give you an idea of what to expect from one of the world’s most anticipated games.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

The development studio behind the acclaimed “Witcher” series announced “Cyberpunk 2077” all the way back in 2012.

In the years since, it’s become one of the world’s most highly anticipated games.

At Microsoft’s E3 press conference in June 2018, fans finally got a first look at the new game. Then, one year later at another Microsoft E3 press conference, Keanu Reeves showed up to announce that he would play a character in the game — and, more important, that “Cyberpunk 2077” would finally come out in April 2020.

Unfortunately, the game just got hit with a major delay: It’s now expected to arrive later this year, on September 17.

Cyberpunk 2077: A Futuristic Masterpiece In The Making From Makers Of The Witcher Trilogy

Adam Badowski: “The Body Is No Longer Sacrum, It’s Profanum”

Back in 2011, a Polish developer called CD Projekt Red came out of nowhere and took the whole gaming industry by a storm with their second title of a franchise called as The Witcher. Furthermore, in 2015, they released the third title of the franchise The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The game won various Game of the Year Awards including the Golden Joystick and The Game Awards. While the Witcher 3, an RPG set in the Medieval period, helped CD Projekt Red carve out their name among the top game developers of the world, their next project— Cyberpunk 2077 is completely different and shows that the company is unafraid of taking risks and going in a new direction.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set in the year (you guessed it) 2077 and carries a dark futuristic theme with it. On 27th of August Cyberpunk 2077’s 48-minute gameplay walkthrough was released, and covered major aspects of the game in detail. We’ve come up with a detailed breakdown of the walkthrough video to provide you with all minute details you need to know about Cyberpunk 2077.

Before we delve further, do note that Cyberpunk 2077 is still under development, hence actual gameplay may differ from the one shown in the walkthrough. Everything you see in the video below may not bear resemblance to the final version and there may be some changes in the actual game.

Cyberpunk 2077 Gameplay: Everything You Need To Know

The game is an RPG (Role Playing Game) with a first-person perspective that provides you an immersive experience. Cyberpunk 2077 takes you to an open world environment where all the events occur at a place called ‘Night City’ in the year 2077. The Night City is located in Northern California and akin to all Californian cities, is grueling and unforgiving in nature. The polis is full of criminals and ‘mishaps’ happen at any time. It is a dystopian city where violence and oppression is the rule rather than the exception.

The game provides a great character customization options through enabling you to not only change the look of the character but also select a backstory for your playable character. All your decisions will have a considerable influence on the storyline and your backstory is said to have a significant effect on how the NPCs perceive you. The character customization options contain the gender of your character, skin tone, hair, body type, and tattoos to name a select few.

Furthermore, your character is provided with apparel like jackets. These apparels provide armor and are upgraded in the form of experience points called Street Cred, which can be gained by completing side quests.

CD Projekt Red has done a great job of making the city looks futuristic by adding all futuristic elements you are likely to see by 2077. These include, but are not limited to flying cars, highly advanced vehicles and various remedies that can alter the functioning of the human body. The one ‘drug’ shown in the walkthrough was a reflex booster that helps your character to move faster that gives a significant edge in a highly chaotic shooting environment. All of these seems familiar to one’s imagination of the future but presented in a way that surprises and involves the gamers.

On the whole, the game environment is highly interactive thanks to customized options present in the game. For instance, you see various ads displayed on some banners that specifically tailor to your character as you move closeby. Loading screens have been entirely avoided in the open-world environment to provide a complete player immersion experience.

Cyberpunk 2077: Characters and Features

The walkthrough was tailormade just to give the look and feel of the game, hence not much of the storyline was revealed. However, it surely gives a certain idea to the character’s lifestyle. The gameplay walkthrough takes you through a rescue mission of a girl kidnapped by a gang of scavengers for body transplants. In the walkthrough, the selected character was a female and was accompanied by a companion (Jackie) and a Netrunner (T-bug) for the mission. In case you get stuck somewhere or get sidetracked, The Netrunner will guide you back to the path and will provide useful intelligence pivotal to the mission.

In this mission, the player fights the scavengers to save the girl and in the end, the girl is found unconscious and the player runs a diagnostic on her body by plugging a wire directly into her head to check her mental and physical state. This gives an idea of another futuristic element that is the physical alteration in the human body and the advancement in medical science in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. This element was later uncovered in detail when your player goes to a RipperDoc, a person who makes upgrades to the human body. You can visit RipperDocs later in the game for more upgrades, required that you pay the in-game currency called eddies which are earned by completing the missions.

Your actions in each and every single mission will affect and shape your entire open-world experience. For instance, a mission against the scavengers will lead them to directly attack you in the near future. The game also features interactive decision making, a feature much similar to the one in The Witcher and directly affects the storyline.

On the whole, Cyberpunk 2077 looks to cement CD Projekt RED’s spot among the top names in the gaming industry. The graphics look great and hopefully, they’ll get better with development. The gameplay looks intriguing and the great amount of user-environment interaction surely seem to make Cyberpunk a top contender for the future GOTY title. Sadly, until CD Projekt Red are done with the game, all we can do is wait and hope that the hype doesn’t see the game meet a fate similar to No Man’s Sky.

Update: It will be the last ever special edition Xbox One X.

The Cyberpunk 2077 controller is available to buy now, and costs $74.99 USD.

Check all of them out in the gallery below:

Original story: After teases, and some leaks, Microsoft has revealed the Cyberpunk 2077 Limited Edition Xbox One X console bundle. The console is set to launch in June, three months before the Cyberpunk’s September 17 release date.

Based on the box shown in the reveal trailer, the bundle appears to come with a digital copy of Cyberpunk 2077, however the console will be available months before the game itself.

Both the console and previously seen Cyberpunk controller feature designs straight out of Night City, including a glow in the dark message on the console that says “No future,” along with themed custom panels that take after the game’s futuristic setting. The controller features Johnny Silverhand’s black and silver color scheme, along with touches of red.

Yesterday, the Xbox Twitter account posted a teaser video filled with codes, along with text that read, “#breakthecode”. Fans worked together to break the code, and were eventually rewarded with the limited edition console’s reveal trailer, which was posted to Xbox’s YouTube channel as an unlisted video.

Congratulations Choombas, you worked together to #breakthecode!

The console reveal comes just a few days after Amazon Canada leaked the Cyberpunk 2077-themed Xbox One controller, which is now confirmed to be included in this console bundle.

Cyberpunk 2077 video shows off 15 minutes of gameplay

Developers also revealed more about the Pacifica district and different styles of gameplay.

Update: The gameplay walkthrough video is now on YouTube, and embedded above. The Q&A panel is embedded below, and features a chat about world design, sidequests, and character creation.

Original article: CD Projekt Red will share a 15-minute edit of Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay during a livestream on Friday. The stream will also include interviews with developers that will dive deeper into the Pacifica district of Night City and the different ways you’ll be able to approach your adventures in the gritty cyber-world of the future.

The Cyberpunk 2077 livestream will get underway at 8 pm CEST/2 pm Eastern/11 am Pacific on August 30, and will be available on CD Projekt Red’s Twitch and Mixer channels.

The studio also announced last week that its plan to show gameplay in person at PAX West has been changed, and it will instead be streaming from Warsaw. The cosplay contest is still a go, but the developers panel is not.

“There are many logistical (and some creative) reasons behind this decision, but the most important thing we want to say is that we’re sorry for the change of plans,” CDPR said. “We know that many of you waited to meet us face to face in Seattle and it bums us out that we won’t be able to see each other there.”
