John Mamais also touched upon ray tracing, and how it will be used in Cyberpunk 2077.

It’s not something we started with because ray-tracing is also a recent thing within the industry. And we use ray-tracing for emissive lights to make adverts and the neon lighting you see look amazing. We also use ray-traced ambient occlusion and ray-tracing for the skyline.

While the game is still far from being completed, it still looks amazing. During Gamescom 2019, our own Chris had the chance to attend a gameplay presentation, and he was impressed by the game’s scope.

While aspects were duplicated, you could comfortably call it a half-hour mission, and it’s one of so many that will be found within the six districts of Night City. Last year we already covered a leaked image that suggested that Cyberpunk 2077 will support NVIDIA’s Ray Tracing tech, and NVIDIA has now officially confirmed that it has partnered with CD Projekt Red to bring the rendering technique to the action-RPG.

“Cyberpunk 2077 is an incredibly ambitious game, mixing first person perspective and deep role-playing, while also creating an intricate and immersive world in which to tell this story. We believe the world of Cyberpunk will greatly benefit from the realistic lighting that ray tracing delivers,” NVIDIA’s head of GeForce marketing, Matt Wuebbling, said.

Ray tracing is an innovative (at least by digital entertainment standards, because film animations have been using it for some time now) method of tracking light rays, allowing for generation of photorealistic lighting, reflections and shadows. So far it is supported by only a few titles, such as Metro Exodus, Battlefield V or Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but more developers are announcing that it will appear in their upcoming projects. Of course, to enjoy its full potential, the technology requires a really powerful hardware and it seems like it will take a few long years before it becomes a common occurrence.

Nvidia released two screenshots showing Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing enabled, in 4K resolution (you can see them above) – and it looks amazing. The world of the latest game from CD Projekt RED seems to be made to make the best use of the technology. All these neon signs, electronics, sources of even the brightest light look absolutely impressive. The problem is that even the owners of the strongest GeForce RTX 2000 family of GPUs (so far only they offer full support of real-time ray tracing) are unlikely to be able to admire such visuals – at least not in UltraHD – because ray tracing is infamous for consuming resources. Of course, we’re keeping our fingers crossed so that the developers can optimize the game as much as possible, but it’s hard to believe that by April next year we’ll be able to harness this still fresh technology.

Rumour: Cyberpunk 2077 will support both real-time ray tracing and NVIDIA’s Hairworks [UPDATE: Fake]

It appears that CD Projekt RED’s new role-playing game, Cyberpunk 2077, will support real-time ray tracing tech as well as NVIDIA’s Hairworks tech. This information comes from a leaked video which showcases the in-game graphics menu of Cyberpunk 2077.

We do know that CD Projekt RED was showcasing Cyberpunk 2077 running on an NVIDIA GTX1080Ti at 1080p and with 30fps. As such, we don’t know whether an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080Ti will be able to handle this game with RTX, especially since the game will not be coming out anytime soon.

Still, it’s pretty cool witnessing another highly anticipated triple-A game game support real-time ray tracing. Moreover, and while we can’t see the remaining options, the Cyberpunk 2077 demo was most likely running with a mix of Ultra and High settings, and with HairWorks enabled.

Both NVIDIA and CD Projekt RED have not officially announced yet Cyberpunk 2077 supporting the Hairworks or the real-time ray tracing (RTX) effects. However, it’s pretty clear from this leaked image that the game will indeed support them. Still, and since the companies have not announced anything yet, we are marking this as a rumour (so take it with a grain of salt)!

Cyberpunk 2077 will support ray tracing on GeForce RTX graphics cards, with CD Projekt Red announcing a partnership with Nvidia at E3 2019 to juice up the visuals of the much-anticipated game.

So those who have bought a GeForce RTX card will be able to enjoy realistic lighting and other ray tracing bells and whistles – and maybe even other GPUs, theoretically, although the dedicated RT cores will doubtless be needed to ensure the game runs smoothly.

Nvidia also furnished us with a couple of screenshots to show off what we can expect from ray tracing (at 4K resolution) in Cyberpunk 2077, which you can cast your eye over on this page.

We recently commented that what we saw recently at E3 in terms of Cyberpunk’s graphics didn’t blow us away in quite the same way as a year ago, but these ray tracing pics look very tasty (particularly the lighting and reflections in the top image).

DLSS in the mix?

Whether or not Cyberpunk 2077 will also get DLSS support isn’t clear, but many gamers will be hopeful that this is the case, in order to help the title run smoothly on RTX GPUs if ray tracing is switched on.

DLSS can give a very substantial boost to frame rates, which could be crucial to offset any of the overheads imposed by turning on ray tracing. Indeed, it could be particularly important seeing as this game is shaping up to be a highly demanding title in terms of how taxing the graphics are, even before ray tracing is thrown into the equation.

We’ll just have to wait and see, but it would make sense for Nvidia to make the effort to also include DLSS, given how high-profile this game is. DLSS support alone could be a major driver to get people to pick up RTX graphics cards.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been building up quite the hype storm, fuelled even more of late by Keanu Reeves turning up in the game, and in person at E3.

Overall, therefore, Ghostrunner’s RT experience can be great but, with a bit of optimization by Epic regarding the implementation of RTX effects in Unreal Engine 4, it might be possible to get much more results. high without reducing performance.

Obviously, we repeat, these are parameters that nobody wants to adopt, but it’s also a good way to get an idea of ​​the scalability of these RT features included in Unreal Engine 4.

Ghostrunner’s DX12 rendering and associated Ray Tracing features are still flagged as “ experimental, ” but we can expect to find something more refined and optimal in the final version of the game. After all, as you can see in the integrated video a little further, operating in the control console, you can get respectable results even on the least powerful RTX GPU on the market. Cards without Ray Tracing hardware management, for their part, behave well: the game runs between 80 and 110fps in 1080p and with “ epic ” settings on GTX 1660 Super.

Ghostrunner, in the end, is a game thanks to high-level performances which can however be further optimized in the months preceding its release. The UE4 resolution scaler, for example, can give you access to sub-native resolutions. This translates into better performance by sacrificing a little visual quality. The game, however, does not support the Unreal Engine 4 Time Upscaler, a technology that accumulates data from previous images to enhance the details of subsequent images. The demo also doesn’t support Nvidia’s miraculous DLSS 2.0 which could have helped create amazing results for this type of product.

In general, however, the recently released demo is really impressive: Ghostrunner takes shape like a magnificent title, from a technical point of view and the game mechanics also seem to be well implemented. We can’t wait to get our hands on the final code.

All I can think about is how awesome the screenshots coming out look. I’m not even talking graphics, here. They fricking nailed the aesthetic. That counts for wayyy more than some RTX shit. Nobody can say for sure from a little footage and some images, but to me it looks like they got that cyberpunk dystopian vibe on lock and then refined it to a level that has never been achieved before. Next level, no hype, that’s just real. Anybody who’s consumed a lot of cyberpunk media will probably agree. I ask myself if they can really do for that what they did for historic medieval settings. and maybe they actually can.

I’m not so sure I’d ‘love’ to mix those flavors. Something in my mind says there’s no way that’s intentional. But my eyes say that it can only be one thing. “Eyyyep. That’s a penis.”

Cyberpunk 2077, Modern Warfare, Dying Light 2, Watch Dogs: Legion to have ray tracing

NVIDIA went big with its ray tracing technology announcements during Gamescom 2019, and many developers are on board with implementing the technology into their games. There will be plenty of upcoming AAA games that will feature ray tracing, and they include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Cyberpunk 2077, Dying Light 2, Watch Dogs: Legion, and Control. Oh, and let’s not forget that Minecraft will be getting the ray tracing treatment.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will feature real-time ray tracing shadows on PC. It will be released on October 25, 2019, for consoles and PC.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Watch Dogs: Legion is the highly anticipated hacking action game from Ubisoft, and it will be featuring ray tracing reflections. You can see the details in the ray tracing with the puddles giving off a reflection of the city above.

Control

Control is developed by Remedy (Max Payne, Quantum Brea,), and it’s coming out later this month on August 27, 2019. We’ve seen the ray tracing in action for this game during E3, and it was lovely to look at. The reflection of the metallic pipes is breathtaking.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 will have a demo at Gamescom 2019, and it features ray tracing. The gameplay presentation runs for every 30 minutes at the booth in the Gamescom Entertainment Area (Hall 6, Booth C049).

CD PROJEKT RED and NVIDIA partner to bring ray tracing to Cyberpunk 2077

NVIDIA and CD PROJEKT RED have announced that NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ is an official technology partner for Cyberpunk 2077 and that the companies are working together to bring real-time ray tracing to the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 won over 100 awards at E3 2018 and Gamespot calls it “one of the most anticipated games of the decade.” The game is the next project from CD PROJEKT RED, makers of the highly acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has won numerous “Game of the Year” awards. NVIDIA and CD PROJEKT RED have a long history of technology collaboration that spans more than a decade.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an incredibly ambitious game, mixing first-person perspective and deep role-playing, while also creating an intricate and immersive world in which to tell its story,” said Matt Wuebbling, head of GeForce marketing at NVIDIA. “We think the world of Cyberpunk will greatly benefit from the realistic lighting that ray tracing delivers.”

Ray tracing is the advanced graphics technique used to give movies their ultra-realistic visual effects. NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs contain specialised processor cores designed specifically to accelerate ray tracing so the visual effects in games can be rendered in real time.

“Ray tracing allows us to realistically portray how light behaves in a crowded urban environment,” says Adam Badowski, head of Studio at CD PROJEKT RED. “Thanks to this technology, we can add another layer of depth and verticality to the already impressive megacity the game takes place in.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality. You can customise your character’s cyberware, skillset and playstyle, and explore a vast city where the choices you make shape the story and the world around you.
