Cyberpunk 2077 ESRB Rating Includes Intense Violence, Nudity, and More

By Rollin Bishop – May 6, 2020 11:51 am EDT

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has officially revealed that Cyberpunk 2077, the upcoming video game from developer CD Projekt Red, is officially rated “M” for Mature. The ESRB, if you’re somehow not familiar, basically rates that content for upcoming video games so that folks know what they’re getting into when they play in the same way that movies get ratings like PG or R. Given what we’ve seen and heard about the game thus far, that “M” rating isn’t exactly surprising, but the full rundown on why it earned that rating is truly something to behold.

According to the ESRB rating, players can select a gender and customize them to the point of how their “breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals” look. There are drugs, prostitution, extreme violence, and strong language. In other words, it sounds exactly like everything Cyberpunk 2077 has shown itself to be thus far.

Here’s the full rating summary from the ESRB, because it genuinely deserves to be read in its entirety:

“This is a first-person RPG/shooter in which players assume the role of a mercenary named V trying to make their way through the open-world of Night City. Players can explore futuristic locations, interact with citizens, perform missions, and engage in combat to complete various objectives within a storyline. Characters use handguns, machine guns, rifles, and explosives during frenetic firefights with humans and cybernetically enhanced enemies; players can also use melee weapons (e.g., wrist-mounted blades, enhanced limbs) to stab enemies and, in some cases, dismember them. Combat is frenetic, with frequent gunfire, cries of pain, explosions, and blood-splatter effects. Some locations depict mutilated corpses with open chest cavities and/or exposed organs/entrails. During one quest, players assist a character by hammering nails through his hands and feet; screaming sounds and blood effects accompany the scene. The game contains nudity and sexual material: Players can select a gender and customize their character; customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals. Players can encounter events where they have the option to engage in sexual activities with other main characters or prostitutes—these brief sex scenes (from a first-person perspective) depict partially nude characters moaning suggestively while moving through various positions. Some scenes contain brief depictions of thrusting motions; other scenes depict a character’s head moving towards a partner’s crotch. The game contains frequent depictions and references to fictional drugs, including characters taking puffs/hits from a state-altering inhaler/stimulant; an animated billboard ad depicts a man snorting speed. Some sequences allow the player to drink alcoholic beverages repeatedly until the screen distorts; player’s character can also drive cars while drunk. The words ‘f**k’ and ‘c*nt’ appear in the dialogue.”

Cyberpunk 2077 weapons

Basically it’s a FPS game with a skill tree. Destiny 2077. Sad.

It’s an action RPG with stat leveling, skills, specialization paths, branching storylines, multiple solutions to challenges, dialog options, etc.

Or, it’s not an RPG, just like Deus Ex, Fallout 3/NV/4, Skyrim, System Shock, etc aren’t RPGs either.

Basically it’s a FPS game with a skill tree. Destiny 2077. Sad.

This game is literally a spiritual successor to Deus Ex, which was an FPS with a skill tree and branching dialogue.

Psst. Do you want to hear a secret? The Witcher 3 was also an open-world action-adventure game masquerading as an RPG.

Had no idea about it since didn’t check on the development lately + removal of cutscenes. Was new to me so put it up in case somebody missed that.

An RPG isn’t an RPG unless it can hurl explosive ordnance over long distances.

We’re talking about role propelled grenades, not rocket playing games. Wait, I forget what we’re talking about now.

I think Kerbal Space Program might be a rocket playing game. that and the old freeware flight simulator Orbiter.

Seriously though, what exactly IS a ‘true’ RPG? It’s such a broad, nebulous genre. Does an RPG have to have a branching storyline? Do you play with friends, or alone? Does it have to have a concrete ‘leveling’ system? Skill trees? What?!

If you want to go for a real, purist argument, you could say that only pen-and-paper games like D&D, Shadowrun, or Paranoia are RPGs. but that would just be silly.

No kerbal is basically a FPS with rockets.

As for the definition of RPG, it’s always been fairly open, and there are so many sub-categories and mixed genres. I think the most basic definition (at least in my mind) is that a “true” RPG is a stat/skill based game where your options for solving challenges is based on the way you build your character, who improves in abilities over time. That includes games like deus ex, fallout, elder scrolls. That doesn’t include FPS/action games with light RPG elements, like Far Cry, Assassins Creed, etc.

Edit – I realize there may be some holes in my logic, its the best I can do after 3 beers. Kerbal is actually a 3rd person shooter with rockets.)

Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be delayed because of coronavirus

Working from home is keeping the Cyberpunk 2077 release date on track

It’s good to know that Cyberpunk 2077 looks to still be on track for its release date of September 17th 2020. CD Projekt Red has come out and announced that, despite the coronavirus epidemic, their staff would be continuing to work, but utilising the ability to do it remotely instead of in an office. This is as a precaution to try and keep their staff safe while maintaining some semblance of a schedule to make sure everything actually gets done on time.

The statement was released on Twitter and explained that they’ve been keeping an eye on the situation, and have made the decision to switch to full remote work for as long as needed. Given that we’ve no real way of knowing how long this is going to last, it’s good that the company is taking the safety of its staff seriously, especially as it’s safe to assume that each staff member is integral to the development of the game at this late stage in the development cycle.

While this is an all-important step towards looking after their employees, it doesn’t negate the fact that this probably means the staff will be working longer hours at home. Back in January, shortly after the delay of Cyberpunk 2077 from April 16th to the new date in September, a call with investors had the chief executive admitting that there would still be some need for crunch.

This also doesn’t take into account that many of the staff might not be used to working from home, which, while it sounds great, does have a fair few challenges. While the date is still set to be hit according to the company, the ongoing effects of both coronavirus and the new working environment could well mean things either take longer, or the team has to crunch harder. The former is obviously preferable to the latter, but it’s impossible to say which way things will go.

It’s worth noting that GOG.com has also gone into full remote work as well. The company is part of the CD Projekt family of companies, so it makes perfect sense that their statement is the same as the CD Projekt Red one. There are some differences in how this will affect the staff of course, but it’s reassuring to see that nobody in the company is being forced to endure the volatile environment of office work at this point in time.

As things stand, Cyberpunk 2077 will launch on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia on September 17th 2020 with a next-gen launch following later on Xbox Series X and PS5.

What Makes Cyberpunk 2077 An RPG?

Share

After seeing Cyberpunk 2077’s shooting mechanics and having The Witcher 3 work to appeal to a more general audience, many fans weren’t sure what to make of Cyberpunk 2077. Would the changes to combat mean it would have more light RPG elements? How deep would the character building with the upgrade system go? Today, we saw a 50-minute demo at E3 that clarified some of this. Here’s what we discovered.

Stats Drive Your Abilities And Gear

RPG fans love to tinker with numbers and maximize their character’s potential by distributing these efficiently. Cyberpunk 2077 puts a lot in your hands in terms of how you build your character. “What was very important to us was to build a game in the way that you can play it as you would like to play it,” says lead quest designer Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz.

To achieve this, CD Projekt Red gives you many options to consider when it comes to your attributes and skills. Doing missions levels up attributes, which can be anything from strength to intelligence. “Those basically set for you the limit of how far can you draw on a specific skill set,” Tomaszkiewicz explains. For instance, heavy weapons will require a lot of strength and guns will require more agility. The more you use something like melee or hacking, the more you level up the skill in that specific area.

You also have access to augmentations by putting them into slots in your body, such as your legs, torso, nervous system. You can then upgrade these as well. “Say you replace your legs with an augmentation for double jump, which will give you access to different places in the missions, but then you want to upgrade that to be better itself. So, you add this extra layer of augmentation to your legs, which basically gives you like quiet walk or run,” Tomaszkiewicz used as an example.

As a reminder, you aren’t confined to one class or playstyle and can pull from multiple skill trees. “There are a lot of different combinations,” Tomaszkiewicz says. “The system is built in the way that you can pick and choose. You don’t have to specialize in one skill; you can be a hacker and you can also use the katana, or you can use heavy guns but also be a techie.” You can respec your character, but be forewarned that you weapon prowess won’t be high, as you must level up your new weapon of choice.

Gear also plays into the stat game as it isn’t purely cosmetic. Loot lovers can scour the world to find the best of the best (you can also purchase these at shops), and really improve your chances of withstanding a tough battle.

A Fleshed Out Story Complete With Strong Supporting Characters

Story is usually king in role-playing games, having a large impact on the experience. Unlike in The Witcher 3 where you played as Geralt, Cyberpunk 2077 allows you to customize and play as your own character named V. Just because the setting is great and the world is so vast, don’t think the game is skimping on narrative. CD Projekt Red is committed to bringing its rich storytelling into Cyberpunk 2077, and this extends to the characters.

Not only did it enlist a cool side character in Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand (more on that here), but he’s not the only unique face you’ll be brushing shoulders with and getting to know. “Strong characters were always a big part of our games. This time around, it’s no different because we have a cast of very interesting characters [where] each of them has something unique and special about them,” Tomaszkiewicz says.

Tomaszkiewicz gave the example of a character who specializes in technology that allows you to live someone else’s memories. “It’s like this next step from the television,” Tomaszkiewicz says. Apparently, the character is quite nerdy about it as it requires definitions and specific expertise to use. Another character Tomaszkiewicz also talked about was an impulsive musician who has his share of problems and you can choose to help him and see more of this storyline.

You meet these supporting characters in both the main storyline and side quests, and they may even join you on missions. As you develop your relationship, it can also turn romantic. Tomaszkiewicz didn’t want to put a number on the romance options yet, as things are still in flux. There will be plenty of bonding moments to help you grow these relationships, but you also will have your share of tough decisions as your actions may or may not be favorable to those all around you, affecting said relationships. “I would say that relationships are not super easy in the world of Cyberpunk because of the story we are doing. We’re trying to go into this direction of noir,” Tomaszkiewicz explains. This means the prospect of happy endings aren’t great, so you need to navigate your relationships carefully to get the outcome you want. “There are sweet moments and there are bitter moments to balance it out,” he adds.

This E3 was the first time we also saw more to the story than V just being a mercenary in this dystopian world. V isn’t your typical mercenary and we find out a chip has been implanted into their head and part of the journey is finding out more about it and what this means.

The end of the E3 demo shows off our first look at cyberspace. “There is much more going on with the biochip than there seems,” says lead designer Miles Tost, hinting that this is a big mystery throughout the game. “To solve this puzzle, it will be up to you and your cyberpunk,” he says. Another big plot point? In cyberspace, a black wall exists where few have gone to the other side and returned. The demo ends with it saying you will be the first.

Cyberpunk 2077 Customizations: Players Can Customize Their Character’s Anatomy

Cyberpunk 2077 genital customization – CD Projekt’s upcoming game will allow players to customize their character’s genitals. Read on for complete details.

The ESRB has recently released a detailed rating summary for CD Projekt’s upcoming title Cyberpunk 2077, which also includes a new bit of information about the game’s character creator that allows players to customise the player-character’s genitals.

Cyberpunk 2077 genital customization

Cyberpunk 2077 will allow players to fully customize the look of their playable character with the help of a deep customization system.

According to the report, players will be able to select a gender and fully customize their character. The report revealed that the customization will include depictions of the human anatomy as well as different sizes and combinations of genitals, which are non-interactive. Players will also have an option to engage in sexual activities further in the game with other main characters or prostitutes. It also details that there will be brief intimate scenes from a first-person perspective that will depict partially nude characters reacting suggestively while moving through various positions.

As for violence, it seems that the game will feature extreme levels of violence, blood, gore, and evisceration. Apart from this, the game will also have other taboo elements which involve drug use, alcohol consumption, the inclusion of drunk driving, use of foul language and more. In addition, corpses may also be eviscerated if the player makes use of automatic weapons in the quests. The report also makes mentions of frequent gunfire, cries of pain, explosions, and blood-splatter effects.

Cyberpunk 2077 release date

Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release in September 2020. The game will be available on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia. It is also suggested that the game will make it to Xbox Series X and PS5 when they come out.

The game is set in the Night City, a megalopolis deeply obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. Players will get to play the game as V, who is a mercenary outlaw with a goal to get his hands on the one-of-a-kind implant that will be key to his immortality.

Cyberpunk 2077 Release Date Speculation

In the lead up to E3 we’ve had relatively little news about Cyberpunk 2077. It’s widely believed the release date will be announced at that event, so before that happens I thought I’d take one last stab at predicting it.

  • The Witcher show debuts on Netflix this fall

This is a bit of a stretch as an indicator, but it serves Netflix to have CDPR heavily on people’s minds when the show comes out (given that The Witcher 3 came out four years earlier). It’s unlikely to be a factor, but I throw it in for your consideration.

  • A typical marketing campaign see’s a game drop 12-18 months after the first trailer

This timeframe comes from The Triple S League, who, while not a perfect source (eg their failed 2018 release prediction), have a lot of knowledge about the industry. If they are correct, this means that we should see the game this fall given the first trailer was at the E3 2018.

This comes from TSL, Luke Stephens (who provides very extensive analysis about why this is), and Polish analysts looking at CDPR’s financial moves.

  • Four-year interval between releases (2007, 2011, 2015)

The company, whether planned or not, has released each AAA title at four-year intervals. It could easily be argued that there’s nothing demanding they keep to this routine (if anything, you’d expect them to want to produce faster), but to go five years without a major release would be unprecedented.

  • Two major releases between 2017-21

Through their own statements they planned for two major releases in a four-year period and thus far (through 2017 and 2018) none have appeared–it’s extremely unlikely they would release AAA games in back-to-back years (2020 and 2021).

  • Brokerage house estimate

In November a Polish brokerage house estimated the game would release in either Q4 2019 or Q1 2020 (this is a separate estimate from the one referenced above).

  • CDPR’s merchandise store opened May 8th and while it offers gear for all their properties, Cyberpunk is surely the kick expected to get it going

This suggests the game is coming sooner than later (why open it a year or more beforehand when there’s nothing coming soon to promote it?).

  • Cyberpunk Red RPG in August

This is seven years in the making (it was announced along with the video game); the update to Mike Pondsmith’s pen-and-paper RPG is coming out this summer (it’s being showcased at Gen Con). The game will fill the chronological gap between the canonical 2020 RPG and the 2077 video game (the poorly received third edition is being discarded). The most effective way to launch the RPG is with the video game release around the corner (if the video game was planned for next year, no doubt the RPG would be delayed accordingly–the hype around CDPR’s release is what will buoy sales).

  • Turkish Twitter page Tweet

In late September, 2018, in a now deleted Tweet, Bilkom’s Twitter feed announced a 2019 release date.

  • Xbox release page

Xbox listed the game as a 2019 release in the fall (deleted when noticed).

  • Territory Studios (who designed the Cyberpunk logo), said they were looking forward to a 2019 release (in a now deleted comment)

One could argue they don’t know the date, but if they had no inkling, why say something specific?

  • Finnish game shop Pelimies listed it as an October release

This could simply be a placeholder (it is now deleted), but it does fit the general Q4 narrative.

  • A verified Reddit user from Alienware says he was told at a training session that the game was coming out this year in a now deleted post

Alienware apparently has a keyboard tied in with the release; as a verified user it’s very unlikely the poster would make this up.

Something I meant to include originally:

  • The game is intended for the current generation of consoles

The further back the release is pushed the less sense that makes–while Q1/Q2 of 2020 would still work to achieve that, Q4 of 2019 is far more synergistic with maximizing that plan.

This is a lot of unrelated content pointing to the same place (Q4, 2019). It’s worth noting there have been no specific leak saying 2020 at all. The overwhelming weight of the above–all the specific mentions, all the trends–point to Q4 this year, but with the caveat that CDPR won’t release the game if they don’t think its ready, meaning they could push it (ala Witcher 3) to Q1 or Q2 next year.

Cyberpunk 2077 Dev Reacts to Leaked 18+ Rating: “You Surprised?”

It seems to take more to earn an 18+ rating in Brazil, but 2077 looks to have landed it.

News by Mathew Olson, Reporter

Got a news tip?

Is there something you think we should be reporting on? Email news@usgamer.net.

From the debut of its very first teaser trailer in 2013, it’s been clear that Cyberpunk 2077 would stay true to the genre’s standard bearers and the tabletop series it draws from by dealing with dark, difficult subject matter. In Brazil, it looks like Cyberpunk 2077 will land at an 18+ rating, though only because of one of the dozens of attributes the country’s board evaluates.

The content specifications, which were reportedly available for a brief window on Brazil’s official Minstry of Justice ratings advisory website, have seemingly been confirmed by CD Projekt RED’s Lead Quest Designer Paweł Sasko, who retweeted a screenshot of the list. “You surprised?” Sasko writes of the 18+ rating with a smirking emoji. “We don’t fuck around.”

Brazil’s advisory rating system is unified across video games, film, and television. It assigns one of six ratings (L for all ages, 10+, 12+, 14+, 16+, 18+) based on a list of criteria that are logged for each age range. For instance, the English version of Brazil’s official ratings guide specifies that a display of a weapon with intent of committing violence warrants a 10+ rating, while actually showing a violent act warrants a 12+ rating. Both notices are included in full rating specifications.

The list retweeted by Sasko, then, covers everything from Cyberpunk 2077’s all ages-rated themes (weapons without violence, moderate or hinted use of illicit drugs) to the appearance of related, more serious content (mutilation, depicted consumption of illicit drugs). For brevity’s sake, here’s every aspect Brazil appears to have rated 14+ or higher:

  • Descriptions of illicit drug consumption or trafficking (14+)
  • Sexualization (14+)
  • Sexual exploitation (14+)
  • Intentional death (14+)
  • Nudity (14+)
  • Prositution (14+)
  • Sexual Relationship (14+)
  • Use of illicit drugs (16+)
  • Mutilation (16+)
  • Intense sexual relations (16+)
  • Suicide (16+)
  • Cruelty (18+)

Many of the aspects for which Cyberpunk 2077 only earns a 14+ or 16+ rating, such as depiction of illegal drug use and the inclusion of sexually explicit scenes, would likely bump it up to a Mature 17+ rating under the American ESRB. “Cruelty” is the only line it seems Cyberpunk 2077 crosses into 18+ territory; The English language version of the guide defines it as covering any “realistic scene of violence, in a sadistic way, and which inflicts intense physical pain.” There are several 18+ violence criteria and a few for drug use and sexuality that seemingly are not crossed in Cyberpunk 2077.

Earlier this month, CD Projekt RED’s Adam Badowski announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has already been rated “by the vast majority” of rating boards for the territories it will release in. Had Cyberpunk 2077 not been delayed to September 17, 2020, it would’ve needed to pass through ratings evaluations much earlier, but now it serves as a good sign that it will make its new date despite CD Projekt’s transition to remote work during the pandemic.

Cyberpunk 2077 To Feature Customization Of Genitals With Various Sizes, Combinations

The official website of the ESRB just listed upcoming video game Cyberpunk 2077 with a particular description of its features.

Cyberpunk 2077 is not messing around with customization

The Entertainment Software Rating Board or ESRB official website just listed the game recently and pretty much the description of the game is pretty blunt like characters using handguns, melee weapons, describing the enhanced limbs and what the characters use it for, and more. Since the game has painted itself with a rating of M for mature already, it did not try to hide the fact of how brutal and honest it can be. One particular description caught the eye of some of its viewers lately.

One part of the description says that there is character customization and it says that players can change the sizes of their genitals or even combine them to their personal liking.

Here is the official section of that description:

The game contains nudity and sexual material: Players can select a gender and customize their character; customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals.

Aside from that eye-popping line, there is also this part:

Players can encounter events where they have the option to engage in sexual activities with other main characters or prostitutes—these brief sex scenes (from a first-person perspective) depict partially nude characters moaning suggestively while moving through various positions. Some scenes contain brief depictions of thrusting motions; other scenes depict a character’s head moving towards a partner’s crotch.

In short, this game will definitely bare everything from blood to gore to sex to full on body customization. Get ready for some wild stuff. Recently the official Twitter account of the game posted a teaser image that announced something about a big reveal this coming June.

We decided to move Night City Wire to Jun 25th. We still look forward to sharing new information about CP’77, but more important discussions are happening right now and we want them to be heard.

We wholeheartedly stand against racism, intolerance and violence.

    Cyberpunk 2077

    Product Description

    About the Game

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality. You can customize your character’s cyberware, skillset and playstyle, and explore a vast city where the choices you make shape the story and the world around you.

    PLAY AS A MERCENARY OUTLAW

Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City.

    • Use a variety of upgradeable weapons, hacking skills and body-enhancing implants to become the best hired gun in town.
    • Take down everyone, from corporate security and the police, to gangs and other mercenaries, in order to gain the street cred needed to access better jobs.
    • Spend your hard-earned money on weapons and cyberware or have fun buying cars, motorcycles, and outrageous clothing.

LIVE IN THE CITY OF THE FUTURE

Enter the massive open world of Night City, a megalopolis that sets new standards in terms of visuals, complexity and depth.

    • Journey through a city that’s larger than life, explore gang-ridden warzones, trade in its bustling downtown, and raid corporate havens.
    • Make deals with sleazy fixers, desperate celebrities, and renegade artificial intelligences — all fighting tooth and nail to make it big in Night City.
    • Make choices in your journey and watch the story change based on your actions.

STEAL THE IMPLANT THAT GRANTS ETERNAL LIFE

Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality.

    • Push yourself to the absolute limit to get your hands on Night City’s most valuable implant — a prototype chip that can make you live forever.
    • Face corporate leaders, underground hustlers, and all of the most feared people in Night City — those who will do everything in their power to possess the prototype chip.
    • Choose how to handle this enormous power and who you wish to become.
