[Updated] CDPR Dev Tools “Drastically” Updated For Cyberpunk 2077

[UPDATE 1] Following our original report, some might have concluded that CD Projekt Red has yet to start development on Cyberpunk 2077. In an article posted by Kotaku, visual effects artist Jose Texeira, gave some further explanation about the updated development tools. According to Texeira, his previous quotes didn’t at all imply that work on Cyberpunk 2077 hasn’t begun yet:

“I mentioned that we were upgrading the engine based on the feedback everybody gave from The Witcher 3,” Texiera said. “We’re upgrading the engine. It’s a pretty thorough upgrade. Almost every aspect of the engine is getting upgraded. My particle effects editor is getting upgraded, as is almost every other tool.”

“But the article that was written online was worded in a slightly click-bait-y type way that made it sound like we haven’t even started really working on Cyberpunk yet,” he added. “I didn’t say that. We’re just upgrading the tools. That’s all I said. That’s something that any company that uses custom software has to do from time-to-time. That’s all.”

“The engine team took all the feedback, and they’re upgrading it,” said Texiera. “The hope is that it’ll allow us to do a lot more with the same engine. A lot more and faster. It’s still very much an ongoing process, but it’s promising stuff.”

[Original] CD Project Red’s upcoming action-RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, is still shrouded in mystery, but it seems that feedback on The Witcher 3 is being put to good use for the game’s development.

At PAX East, website iDigitalTimes interviewed CD Projekt Red’s visual effects artist, Jose Teixeira, who shared some interesting tidbits about CD Projekt Red’s upcoming Cyberpunk project.

The hype for Cyberpunk 2077 is real, and since the game’s official reveal back in 2012, only a short teaser trailer was released. The trailer caught the interest of many gamers, and according to Teixeira, caused an “avalanche of interest”.

“There is a difference between how games like this reach a general audience. With The Witcher it was a snowball effect and there was this core of hardcore gamers that knew about The Witcher and they passed the word along. It was a very slow process,” Teixeira said. “With Cyberpunk 2077 all they did was this little mood trailer and it just went insane. It was like an avalanche of interest immediately. It clicks with people instantly and it does the exact same thing with me.”

According to CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 is their most ambitious project to date, and will be far bigger than The Witcher 3. Expectations for Cyberpunk 2077 are high, and CD Projekt Red aims to deliver a title even more successful than The Witcher 3. In order to achieve this, the development team devoured the feedback they received from the latest Witcher installment. The result is a list of features that the development team wanted for their new software tools.

“The most important thing that’s happening at the moment is that the programmers are taking the feedback we gave them from working on The Witcher . As cliche as it sounds it was a big learning experience,” the visual effects artist said, explaining that by the end of the development everyone had a list of features they wanted for new dev tools. “The programmers are updating our software quite drastically.”

A release date for Cyberpunk 2077 hasn’t been announced, but we hope to hear more about the game in the coming year. Are you excited for Cyberpunk 2077? What features would like to see in action-RPG? Hit the comments.

Analysts Believe Cyberpunk 2077 Will Be “More Popular” Than Red Dead Redemption 2

Aside from an open world, there doesn’t seem much comparison or competition between Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 – but but market analysts believe it’ll be “more popular” than Rockstar’s Western epic.

These analysts take it as a good sign that Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold so extremely well, and believe Cyberpunk 2077 will do even better in sales – thanks in part due to the setting and the fact that, unlike RDR2, it’s launching on PC. More details are below.

This information comes from a document posted on Stockwatch.pl, a Polish stock market and investment website. While translations are never 100% accurate, self-proclaimed “native Polish speaker and translator” Dr4kun on Reddit seems to have a decent translation of a key section – which matches what we could translate ourselves.

Stockwatch states that “quality remains the absolute highest priority for CD Projekt, and Cyberpunk 2077 will be no less elaborate and polished than RDR2”. They are forecasting USD $525 million in sales – whereas RDR2 (gross) was $725 million in its first three days, which they also point out is only on consoles. “With that in mind, our forecasts for CP2077 seem very reserved – remember the game will be simultaneously both on the consoles

The analysts also believe that “the world of Cyberpunk / sci-fi should be more popular among gamers than the Wild West”. That remains to be seen, especially as Rockstar is in a category all of its own when it comes to videogames.

Stockwatch are changing CDP(R) stock from ‘Neutral’ to ‘Purchase’, so they’re expecting big things from the company. Regardless, everyone is clearly hoping for big things from Cyberpunk 2077 when it launches, especially as the sales for both Gwent and Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales are apparently “below the company’s expectations”, meaning CD Projekt RED. We’re certainly eagerly anticipating Cyberpunk 2077. but will it beat Red Dead Redemption 2 when it comes to sales?

Note: A previous version of this article wrongly attributed the original document’s comments to Cyberpunk 2077’s developer/publisher CD Projekt RED. While a lot of this seem to be based on impressions or statements from CD Projekt, the direct quotes are from market analysts.

Here’s What CD Projekt Red Really Said About Religion in Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt Red clarifies a mistranslated Cyberpunk 2077 interview.

Posted July 24, 2019, 3:08 a.m.

A Polish interview for Cyberpunk 2077 that was recently translated into English claimed CD Projekt Red would depict real religions in Cyberpunk 2077, even if the depictions were offensive. That translation is inaccurate, and CD Projekt Red has provided a more accurate translation of its answers.

An interview between CD Projekt Red and Polish news site Gry Online WP was recently translated into English on the video game message board NeoGAF.

The translation reported one quote, attributed to CD Projekt Red quest director Meteusz Tomaskiewicz, that said CD Projekt Red “will not avoid any subject, even if they may offend the sensitivity of some.” This included subjects like Christianity, which the translation claimed would have its own, in-game faction.

IGN reached out to CD Projekt Red to ask whether the translation was accurate, and a representative from the company told us that it was not. CD Projekt Red sent IGN their own English translation of the Polish interview, which we included below.

IGN was also able to independently translate the interview and found the new translation to be more in-line with our own translation.

Gry Online WP (English): You mentioned religion. Does it still exist in the Cyberpunk world?

CD Projekt Red (English): Yes, and in many forms. As I mentioned, our vision is somehow based on the real world. And religion is a very important part of the latter, society-wise. In our game we’re going to see for example Christianity and its different branches, or religions from the East.

Gry Online WP (English): Sounds controversial. Someone will enter a church to cause havoc.

CD Projekt Red (English): We do not want to avoid religion as a topic, authenticity of the world is what counts for us. Technically, the situation you mentioned is possible, but this is all about the choices made by the player. We won’t encourage the player to do so. In our quests, which involve religious themes, we make sure there’s no disrespect.

CD Projekt did not mention an in-game Christian faction. Nor did the developers claim they would offend any particular group. Instead, CD Projekt Red explains that religion will be present in Cyberpunk 2077, like it does in the real-world. And while players are free to explore religion in the game as they choose, quests that involve religion will be designed to avoid any disrespect.

So, players should expect to encounter real-world religions in Cyberpunk 2077. And while what you choose to do in the game is up to you, CD Projekt Red will not intentionally include storylines in the game that could offend members of a particular religious group.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an upcoming first-person RPG from CD Projekt Red, based on the tabletop RPG universe created by Mike Pondsmith. CD Projekt Red has claimed that Cyberpunk 2077 will offer players a wide range of choices for how they explore Night City, but we’ll withhold judgement until Cyberpunk 2077 is released.

Cyberpunk 2077 damage numbers can be turned off, ‘a lot’ of HUD settings optional

The Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay reveal was viewed by almost half a million people. I’m excited, but feel its HUD is a little cluttered in places—not least during its combat sequences. Lucky for me, CD Projekt Red says damage numbers can be turned off and a host of HUD elements will be optional.

Following Monday’s gameplay reveal, Sardukhar, a moderator on the game’s official forum, asked prospective players what they liked and disliked about the footage. Within their own observations, they say they’d like the option to remove the damage numbers above target’s heads—which Sardukhar has since updated with a reply from the dev’s community lead Marcin Momot.

“That is exactly our plan,” Sardukhar quotes Momot. “A lot of HUD elements (including damage numbers) will be optional.”

This echoes Momot’s sentiments on Twitter. When asked specifically about “damage numbers flying on the enemies heads”, and whether or not players can turn this feature off, Momot said: “We are planning on allowing players to turn off/on a lot of the HUD elements.”

We are planning on allowing players to turn off/on a lot of the HUD elements.August 25, 2018

You’ll play Cyberpunk 2077 however you so chose, but I fancy scaling back its HUD and UI entirely—in the same way I played and modded The Witcher 3.

Look out for today’s PCG Q&A for more on what we liked and disliked about Cyberpunk 2077’s new footage. In the meantime, here are five ways the gameplay demo somehow lives up to the hype.

Fans hide disappointment behind ‘stiff upper lip’ as release of Cyberpunk 2077 delayed

The release date of the highly anticipated CD Projekt Red game ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ has been moved back to September 17th.

In a statement, the developer said that although the game is ready, the April 16th release date was no longer possible as it’s still in need of further testing and debugging.

The original release date was announced by Keanu Reeves last year. Nina Prommer/PAP/EPA

Marcin Iwiński, CD Projekt Red’s co-founder and Adam Badowski, head of the studio, said: “We are currently at a stage where the game is complete and playable, but there’s still work to be done.

“Night City is massive – full of stories, content and places to visit, but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing and polishing.

“We want Cyberpunk 2077 to be our crowning achievement for this generation and postponing launch will give us the precious months we need to make the game perfect.”

It is estimated the company has already sold from 700,000 to even a million copies of the game via pre-order.

While the announcement was met with disappointment, fans have rallied behind the company. Commenting on Facebook, Christin Wehle from Germany wrote: “You delayed Witcher 3 and it turned out as the most fantastic game ever.

“So take all the time in the world, you showed us already that Quality matters more than anything to you and that’s what’s making CD Projekt Red so great.”

Other fans said they would have to change their vacation requests at work, as they already took time off in April to play the game.

“Dear CD Project, would you send me this underdeveloped version in April, I don’t mind, thank you in advance, I won’t show it to anyone, only my grandma who has poor eyesight. Kisses,” joked Pablo Ka on Cyberpunk 2077’s Facebook profile.

Meanwhile, Zac Main posted: “I love how positive all these fans are about the delay. I feel the same. It’s great to see people trust a developer for taking their time to put out a stellar product.”

First introduced in 2012 by the company which is also behind the best-selling The Witcher games franchise, the game quickly gained a cult following.

Following last year’s announcement by Matrix star Keanu Reeves of the April 16th 2020 release date, it is estimated they have already sold from 700,000 to even a million copies of the game via pre-order.

While a delay with game releases is nothing new in the business, there is also some speculation it is a planned move to boost sales coinciding with the release of new generation consoles, PS5 and Xbox Series X, planned for later on this year.

Throughout 2019, the company’s stock quotes increased by more than 90 percent, placing it among the most profitable companies in the prestigious Stoxx Europe 600 index (grouping 600 large and medium European companies). Currently, CD Projekt Red’s market value is estimated at 27 billion zlotys.

Something New

Cyberpunk 2077 Will Be More Successful Than The Witcher

CD Projekt Red’s newest title has it all: an immersive sim RPG, cyberpunk shooter elements, and a bigger hype than The Witcher ever managed to attain.

There are Cyberpunk 2077 updates released nearly on a daily basis, and yet the game isn’t even available until April of next year. They weren’t kidding when they said Witcher and Cyberpunk would be taking the world over. As the hype for their Blade Runner-esque sci-fi reaches newer and newer heights with each added bit of news, it’s almost as if the curtain gets drawn ever more closed upon CD Projekt Red’s award-winning predecessor. So, while it retained a breathtaking narrative due to being based on the characters of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, The Witcher 3 does lack in a few areas.

Thus, Cyberpunk 2077 will amend these errors, reshaping not only the way the public and gamers perceive CDPR but also in the way the gaming industry itself experiences open-world capabilities.

The Witcher took us all to a fantasy land laden with myriads of flying beats, disgusting monsters, and the worst of all: humans. In the game, your only choice of weaponry is silver or steel swords and axes or simply the trusty old crossbow. In CDPR’s upcoming title, a multitude of different gadgets and guns are at one’s disposal. From automatic pistols and electric nanowire to futuristic shotguns and hacked drones, there already seems to be an array of varied armaments in Cyberpunk 2077.

From this standpoint, it’s also clear to take note of the fact that RPGs tend to do poorly when up against shooters. While the likes of Skyrim and Shadow of Mordor were terrific open-world titles, games like Battlefield, Call of Duty and even Grand Theft Auto, hold far more intrigue to the gamers. Though little is known about the pre-order profit thus far on Cyberpunk, one Polish article quotes CDPR vice president Marcin Iwiński as “very pleased” on the nature of initial sales and recording them as “much higher” than its predecessor. It only makes sense; there are far more gamers out there who would prefer waving around a gun or rifle as opposed to slashing a sword or ax about.

In his book Blood, Sweat, and Pixels, Jason Schrier discusses the nurture and creation of both CDPR and The Witcher series alongside it. In the initial phase of development on The Witcher 3, besides a larger world to explore, main among the most important gaming components was, as one may guess, having no restrictions. As Schrier puts it:

“(“Freedom” was the word Iwiński used most often as a pillar for what the game would offer.) They wanted it to be the best-looking game you could buy. With The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red wanted to show the world that Poland could make games just as critically and commercially successful as its competitors.”

Aside from this deeply ingrained form of in-game freedom, immersion is the second most important factor in the creation of CDPR games, especially for that of their newest title. As evidenced by their changing of all cutscenes to first person, Cyberpunk will feature a whole new examination of immersion by dropping players into the heart-pounding situations their character may find themselves in.

Additionally, world-building is probably the third most important part of CDPR titles. The fact that they employed city planners on personifying Night City to its fullest is an insane thought. Instead of having this gargantuan map, like The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk will feature far more vertical layers, consisting of a dangerous city teeming with a variety of different buildings, sub-sections, and interiors to explore.

It even comes down to the game’s marketing. Interestingly, I didn’t even start playing The Witcher 3 until last year after I read a few of Sapkowski’s novels. Now, I’m in complete adoration of CDPR for their creative development. Where The Witcher had lacked in its advertising guile, their newest iteration seems to have excelled. I’ve known about the game since 2013 when a conspicuous and animated teaser trailer dropped to every gamer’s astonishment. And most people thought Red Dead Redemption 2 would be the closest thing we could her to playing Westworld.

Iwiński, in an interview with Geoff Keighley at E3 2019, discusses dissimilarities between both games, stating the following:

“So, if we move to Cyberpunk 2077, it’s obviously different. It’s California. But, I think you’ll hopefully feel a little bit of the Polish soul in CP, as well.”

Although they’re entirely different games, both Cyberpunk and The Witcher are helmed by the same creative minds. The staff may have grown a bit since monster-hunting evolved into bio-enhanced cybernetics. But the same hearts and minds still populate the development team, and that is paramount for video game success. What will make Cyberpunk so beloved is this facet of “home-grown-ness.” It will certainly be ten times better than its predecessor, that’s for sure; but if not for The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk wouldn’t exist.

I don’t know about you, but I just can’t wait to have a detachable blade in my forearm.

Cyberpunk 2077 is coming, but keep warm with Humans of Bombay

All hail, Cyberpunk!

For six years, the production of Cyberpunk 2077 was so hush-hush, its confidentiality rivalled a lot of political dilemma. So when E3’s press conference finally unveiled the trailer for the game by CD Projekt Red, there was a moment of silence for how truly visually stunning it was. Vibrant backdrops and vivid character detailing dropped the jaws of the entire gaming community.

In the few hours since the trailer was aired, it garnered millions of views across social platforms, and tweets reflect the excitement. Wario Limeux said, “I want to drown in Cyberpunk 2077. I want that whole aesthetic delivered to my face via firehose.” Nate Ming added, “Cyberpunk 2077, aka ‘ready to disappear for another 100+ hours’” which is what I fully expect when the game is out.

So what is the game about? Based on the 1988 game Cyberpunk 2020, the setting is in a futuristic dystopia, where MegaCorps run and heavily surveil a broken state. The player takes on the persona of V, who comes across cyber-enhanced street warriors, tech-savvy netrunners and corporate life-hackers.

Just heartwarming

This weekend, Humans of Bombay have been churning out some utterly heartwarming posts.

Sunday night produced a girl-power post, featuring two girls sitting on the streetside in a busy Mumbai neighbourhood. One girl speaks of her friend’s defence of her a bully, adding, “She confronted him and made him feel so bad that even he started crying and apologised!” After reading that, I started singing Paul Simon’s ‘You Can Call Me Al’ in my head.

My favourite from this past weekend is of an ageing and well-established photographer, who recalls teaching a watchman how to use a camera, adding, “Now every week, we go out on shoot together. It’s a skill I’m teaching him to use. who knows, maybe he’ll become a big shot photographer someday!” Sharing truly is caring and such a post reminded me that it’s never too late to speak of technological literacy, reflective of the country’s IT Mission.

Small stories like this one, though, show the true power of community, when teaching isn’t mandatory or by-the-book but done purely for the betterment of someone else’s life.

In an interview with Strefa Inwestorow, a Polish investment site, Kicinski talked about a wide variety of topics including the future of The Witcher, Gwent, and of course – Cyberpunk 2077.

“We want to experiment in new fields that were not yet explored in the Witcher. I can’t say much about Cyberpunk, although our ambitions are set really high because that is our style of work. We want to go even higher, and especially seeing how we’re having a business chat, we’re interested in Cyberpunk being commercially even more significant.”

That has. punctured my hype for the game very effectively. I don’t even care if it’s a well done GaaS style game, I don’t want them to dilute their focus from strong single player experiences. If Bethesda can sell 30 million copies of single player experiences with no GaaS elements, why can’t CDPR?

I hope I am overreacting, and the final game ends up only having a multiplayer mode by the side that doesn’t detract from the single player experience; then I think back to Bioware and sob inconsolably.

Yeah, given the job postings, the grant applications, and the project reboot, I got the impression they’re actually allowing campaign co-op or something of that nature, since the online elements sound way, way bigger (and need notably more staff) than they used to.

I thought this made more sense to move up here. Here’s some of the job postings and statements for reference:

CD Projekt has posted more details about the projects, that will be partially funded by the Polish government.

The most important part seems to be the timeline for all 4 projects (that is seamless multiplayer, cinematic feel, animation excellence and city creation) – they will run from 01/2016 and 01/2017 until 06/2019. It’s important to note, that the funded projects should be released by that date, but CDPR can apply to have those deadlines extended.

All of the projects will be included in RedEngine 4, the next iteration of the RedEngine.

CDPR is now looking for the following contractors to help deliver all 4 projects:
