Cyberpunk 2077 is CD Projekt Red’s ‘Fight Club’ — it won’t talk about it

The female protagonist in the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer was a body-scanned Playboy model.

GamesBeat
goes to Poland

The video game industry in Poland is fast becoming one of the most respected and prolific in Europe. GamesBeat spent a week visiting some of the game development and film studios making a worldwide name for themselves. You can read the stories that came out of our visit here, including our in-depth look at the growth of the gaming industry. The Polish government paid for Daniel Crawley’s trip. Our coverage remains objective.

For a project first announced way back in May 2012, we know precious little about sci-fi role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077.

Visiting developer CD Projekt Red in its Praga-district headquarters in Warsaw, Poland last month, it was clear that this lack of news is entirely intentional. Getting any information about this game’s development was nearly impossible. “We don’t talk about Cyberpunk,” laughed Tadek Zieliński, the project manager on the upcoming mobile mutilplayer game, The Witcher: Battle Arena.

But nearly seven million YouTube viewers have watched the stunning teaser trailer for Cyberpunk 2077, which Polish film and animation experts Platige Image created and released in January 2013. It’s a trailer born from an image found in the manual of the original 1998 pen-and-paper role-playing game, Cyberpunk 2020 — a trailer that showed an inspiring vision of a game that CD Projekt Red hadn’t yet created.

Surely the team must have something more to tell?

The secret world of Cyberpunk

I sat down with Michał Platkow-Gilewski, the head of marketing at CD Projekt Red, in one the studio’s meeting rooms, this one themed around its famous Witcher series of role-playing games. Swords hung from the wall, and a map featuring the world of the Witcher covered the ceiling. But despite the medieval theme, the futuristic subject of Cyberpunk 2077 came up during our chat about the studio’s rapid growth since its inception in 2002.

The number of employees is “changing super-fast,” Platkow-Gilewski told me. “It’s way above 200, maybe closer to 300. But this is divided between [the] Witcher team; [the] core team, which is responsible for engine, administration, marketing, finance, et cetera; and there’s a Cyberpunk team as well.”

Ah. So what could he tell me about CyberPunk and where it’s at? “Nothing. Zero,” he said.

I pressed a little, talking about how the spellbinding trailer reportedly came from little more than a panel of an old instruction manual. At that time, they had nothing more, right? “Nothing more,” said Platkow-Gilewski. “Now we have way more, but still we are not talking about it.”

Above: CD Projekt Red’s Witcher-themed meeting room.

But Platkow-Gilewski did share a little more information about the top-secret project, explaining that some artists in the studio are better at creating firearms, while some are better at swords. That defines whether they are working on the Witcher core team or the Cyberpunk core team. Other artists, such as lighting experts, are working across both projects.

As for the total size of the Cyberpunk team, “it is changing,” according to Platkow-Gilewski. “There were probably around 50 people, 60 people, but then a lot of people came to work on Cyberpunk, but they are, like, for two projects [Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3].”

A recruitment trailer

The people who came to CD Projekt Red to work on Cyberpunk, many from overseas, came mainly because of that incredible trailer, which was part of the reason the studio commissioned it.

“Yes, we needed people for Cyberpunk,” said Platkow-Gilewski. “I think that was the best recruitment announcement you can possibly imagine — and one of the most expensive as well. It worked, yeah. The Cyberpunk team is truly international and right now in the company we have people from more than 20 countries, probably. The last time I checked there was 19, but since then a lot of new people have moved in.”

But isn’t there a worry that creating a trailer to help with recruitment offers a vision of a game to fans that’s impossible to live up to? The pressure on CD Projekt Red to match that vision is surely huge. “I’m not afraid of that,” said the confident Platkow-Gilewski.

Above: Platige Image created an incredible trailer for Cyberpunk 2077.

With the total studio team having more than doubled since the start of work on The Witcher 3, I wondered if there would be a big drop-off when development on that game was finally complete.

“I don’t think there will be a big change because we need a lot of people for the next project [Cyberpunk 2077],” said Platkow-Gilewski. “We are still one big family; we have more plans than capacities. With our plans, we have barely time for holidays after the project because we want to jump into new stuff.”

With such assured talk of what’s coming next, I asked one last time if he’d share some more about the mysterious Cyberpunk project: “One day I will. In one year we can meet and talk about that.”

New Cyberpunk 2077 Screenshots Show Off Lighting Effects

CD Projekt Red releases two gorgeous screenshots for Cyberpunk 2077 that show off the engine’s real-time ray tracing ability for lighting effects.

E3 2019 has given fans a whole new perspective of CD Projekt Red’s upcoming open-world cyberpunk thriller Cyberpunk 2077. The studio released a gorgeous looking cinematic trailer for the game on Sunday, where fans got to witness main protagonist V going from one bad situation in Night City to another. Regardless of where he ended up, though, Cyberpunk 2077 consistently showed fans that the future was full of LEDs, neon lights, and attention-grabbing visuals galore.

In order to best display such an aesthetic, CD Projekt Red has just announced a technical partnership with NVIDIA to bring real-time ray tracing to Night City. This will allow every source of light in the game to behave in a realistic manner, and that’s going to produce a visual that should certainly wow gamers in crowded, urban environments.

CD Projekt Red has released two screenshots to show off how the ray-traced lighting looks in-game.

We are partnering with @NVIDIAGeForce to bring real-time ray tracing to Cyberpunk 2077!

Night City has never looked so good.

While this is great news for PC gamers who can fully take advantage of the graphics rendering, not everyone will have a GPU strong enough to handle such a demanding engine – especially while playing at 4k. With great graphics comes great hardware demand, but those who can use it to its full potential are in for a treat. Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t the only game at E3 2019 to confirm real-time ray tracing, either: Watch Dogs Legion will also utilize ray tracing on NVIDIA’s RTX graphics cards.

CD Projekt Red’s upcoming title wowed gamers this weekend with a surprise cameo appearance from Keanu Reeves, who sparked one of E3’s most wholesome moments as he hyped up the game. Keanu will don the role of Johnny Silverhand, a legendary Night City rockstar out on a quest for revenge. If there’s any character who might put V in situations full of amazing lighting, it’s probably someone who has a penchant for rock shows – though it isn’t clear how involved in the storyline Silverhand will get.

Cyberpunk 2077 will release on April 16, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Cyberpunk 2077 Buildings Will Feature ‘A Lot of Activities’

In a conversation with a fan, Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED reveals that the game’s buildings will feature ‘lots of activities’ for players to uncover.

Cyberpunk 2077 is going to feature a massive open-world that is bigger than that of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. But, fans of the futuristic RPG want to know that the game will be substance, not just style, and that its setting is actually filled with things to do. So, to get answers, one fan asked Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED directly.

One Cyberpunk 2077 fan sent a message to the game’s official Facebook page asking the studio how big it will be compared to The Witcher 3. The developer’s representative was more than happy to share, explaining that while the exact world size hasn’t been calculated yet, Night City features “lots of buildings and these buildings have floors.” Many of the taller buildings in the game will be explorable,” added the rep, and “each floor can house a lot of activities.”

It’s not known exactly what these activities will include – this is one thing that the representative didn’t elaborate on during the Facebook conversation. However, CD Projekt RED has previously stated that side quests in the game will feel like complete stories. This means that players could potentially just enter a tall skyscraper out of curiosity and walk out with bags of quests that will take them hours to complete. If these buildings are as explorable as the studio rep suggests, there could be even more interesting discoveries in these buildings, other than side quests.

As if the chance to learn more about Night City wasn’t enough, there’s also the possibility that these side quests could have a significant impact on the game’s overall narrative. In a previous interview, CD Projekt RED also revealed that side quests could affect the game’s main story. So there is a huge incentive there to go through all of the floors in these buildings for a chance to influence the story in unexpected ways.

CD Projekt RED may be willing to share on social media, but at this point, fans have only seen the game in public once. Earlier this year, the studio surprised many by unveiling a 45-minute long gameplay video, offering a brief glimpse of what players can get up to. If the game is as large and has as much to do as the dev has suggested on Facebook and in interviews then this demo will have barely scratched the surface of what Cyberpunk 2077 has to offer.

Cyberpunk 2077 currently lacks an official release date, but is expected to launch for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Cyberpunk 2077 System Requirements And Everything We Know About The Biggest Game Of 2020

We are about 5 months away from returning to Night City – is your setup ready for it? Here are the predictions for Cyberpunk 2077 system requirements.

Cyberpunk 2077, the next big open-world RPG from CD Project RED, is almost here. After a ridiculous number of delays and postponements, the thing is finally moving into the final stages of game development.

Cyberpunk 2077 System requirements PC: the game is going to be filled with Neon

While CD Projekt Red has not yet release Cyberpunk 2077 System requirements or specifications, we can already predict the game’s supposed settings, based on the rigs running the test version in various gaming conventions. In the following article, we would list out some of the recommended specifications and some speculations about the optimal hardware to run the game at the best settings. Besides that, some of the most crucial information about Cyberpunk would be included as well.

1 – Cyberpunk 2077 System Requirements: Recommended Specs

The game has been in development for quite a while, with the first trailer released way back in 2013. Because of that, it is safe to assume that it also used Witcher 3’s engine, at a slightly higher level. Because of that, if your machine is able to run Witcher 3 at an acceptable level, you are likely to be able to run 2077 at a slightly lower setting.

Cyberpunk 2077 PC req is probably going to be rather normal comparing to 2020 standards

Predictions for System Requirements:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen R5 1600 / Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz
  • HDD: 70+ GB of free space
  • RAM: 16 GB of RAM
  • OS: Win 10 64
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 or AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 8GB
  • Screen Resolution: 1080p
  • Direct X: Version 11

Cyberpunk 2077 PC Requirements: Jackie, one of your companions

While the machine that showcased the game was pretty good – the event happened 2 years ago, and it is not a top-level rig anymore. These components would probably allow you to reach 1080p with above 60fps.

2 – Cyberpunk 2077 System Requirements: When will Cyberpunk 2077 be released

The game was showcased again at E3 2019 with a gameplay demo. Everything was on display, from character creation system to boss fights. Initially, Cyberpunk 2077 was set for an April 16 launch, but CD Projekt RED delayed it for five more months back in January, stating that it needs more time to finish the polishing process. This has happened before with Witcher 3. The launch in September would cover PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Google Stadia. A version for the next-gen consoles would be released later.

Cyberpunk 2077 System requirements PC: Dialogue options in a quest

Although this announcement was prior to the coronavirus pandemic, CD Projekt Red has further reassured the fans that they are still going to release the game on time – it won’t be delayed any further.

3 – Cyberpunk 2077 System Requirements: Gameplay Videos and Demos

CD Projekt has previously live-streamed a 15 minutes video of Cyberpunk 2077 which contains part of the Gamescom footage.

You can also check out the 48 minutes demo from 2018’s E3.

4 – Cyberpunk 2077 System Requirements: Is Cyberpunk 2077 an FPS?

The game is actually a combination of genres that barely fit together: a first-person shooter RPG. While it sometimes switches into the third person in cutscenes and driving, first-person combat is still the one action that you do 90% of the time. There are a lot of futuristic guns and toys – the game is very chaotic and fast, but not as aggressive as a pure shooter like Doom.

Cyberpunk 2077 System Req: Combat of 2077 is going to be pretty fast-paced

The main reason that the two genres rarely go together is that the usual RPG progression would often dumb down the shooting experience, making the enemy more bullet-spongy than usual, and more. Cyberpunk 2077 has more or less figure out a way to deal with that problem – they cut down the “Stats” aspect to the minimum. The main character, V, is really agile. In combat, you can duck, peak around covers, sprint and vault to get into a better position… and more. The damage that you deal with each shot would be displayed after every hit – but you can probably turn that off to get a more immersive experience.

Allies in this game looks way more useful than in Witcher 3. From the footages we have seen, Jackie is able to hold his own in combat while doing a lot of other things so that protag would be free to pick up the rest of the job.

Cyberpunk 2077 System requirements PC: The world is filled with NPC

The special skills of V are probably where the RPG aspects of Cyberpunk 2077 kicks in. In the 2018 demo, V was an agile Cyber Ninja with extra movement speed and a slow-motion bullet mode. She can also perform a dash to reposition. When those two skills are combined – the main character could easily flank enemies and perform fatal kill shots.

There are a lot of cool futuristic weapons like a Smart Rifle with homing bullets or Tech Shotgun with the extra power to punch through covers and enemies. You would definitely get a unique experience comparing to the usual shooter combat.

5 – Cyberpunk 2077 System Requirements: A huge character creation system

The 2018 demo was pretty bare-bones – with options for hair, tattoo, and clothing only. However, based on later interviews of the head developers, they are going to improve it and add as many character customization into the game as they could.

Cyberpunk 2077 PC Requirements: Character sheet

The stats system is rather weird – there are some straightforward ones like Strength and Intelligence, while weird stats like ‘Cool’ would also be part of the creation process. The total stats that are included in the list are Strength, Reflexes, Intelligence, Constitution, Cool, Tech.

Cyberpunk 2077 System Req: Customization your face can be a pretty grotesque process

V would have a voice similar to Geralt, and even some voice customization to a limited degree. You can also change the backstory or ‘Lifepath’ of your character – choosing from the wandering Nomad to the Corporation worker or even Street kid and Rockstar. Each life path would unlock unique dialogues and quests throughout the story. You would not be able to change the name of your character, however – they would always be named V.

Cyberpunk 2077 wouldn’t work in third-person, CDPR says

First-person is a huge part of Cyberpunk 2077’s focus on immersion, CD Projekt RED says

If Cyberpunk 2077 weren’t a first-person game, it’d lose a lot of its magnitude and immersive impact. It just wouldn’t work.

Cyberpunk 2077 aims to be the most dynamic, immersive, and choice-driven game CD Projekt RED has ever made. It’s all about making decisions that ripple through a gritty sci-fi metropolis, defining who you are, what you do, and where you go. This huge dynamic scope is a big reason why Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person shooter instead of a third-person game like The Witcher; CDPR doesn’t just want you to play as V., but become the mercenary cyborg. Seeing through V.’s eyes is a big part of that.

According to senior level designer Miles Tost, Cyberpunk 2077 just wouldn’t work as a third-person game. “This is exactly why we have the whole first-person thing in there, right? For us as a studio of storytellers, it’s almost like a natural evolution of how we make an immersive narrative or how we get you to be immersed within the story,” Tost said in a recent Q&A session on Tumblr.

“In Witcher 3, you were looking over Geralt’s shoulder and being an observer of his actions. In Cyberpunk, you naturally slip into the role. We’re building our gameplay systems around this, so it wouldn’t really work without the first-person either.”

Pawel Sasko, senior quest designer for Cyberpunk 2077, also says the team built a new internal scene system from scratch to look and play best in first-person. The new next-gen Red Engine 4 has been optimized from the ground up for the natural immersive viewpoint. CDPR has been building this new high-end engine since The Witcher 3’s launch in 2015 in preparation for their most ambitious game to date.

Tost goes on to highlight how conversations are more fluid in Cyberpunk 2077, not locked sequences that take you out of the game. They can get interrupted and how you respond can either ease tensions or trigger a bloodbath gunfight.

“Case in point: the way our dialog system works. It focuses a lot on looking at NPCs and things and commenting on stuff. In the demo we have a situation where someone interrupts your conversation, and you can choose to look at that guy and comment on the situation as a whole or not. This can actually affect how your dialog ends up.”

Cyberpunk 2077 will release on April 16, 2020 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Do Not Be Alarmed By Cyberpunk 2077 System Requirements !

Cyberpunk 2077 was the shining armor of the E3 2019 event. When Keanu Reeves took to the stage and revealed those interesting details about the game, there was nothing that could lower the hype of this upcoming game. With the focus of the fans now shifted towards core gunplay.

Cyberpunk 2077 was the shining armor of the E3 2019 event. When Keanu Reeves took to the stage and revealed those interesting details about the game, there was nothing that could lower the hype of this upcoming game. With the focus of the fans now shifted towards core gunplay and RPG, there was nothing that could stand in the way. However, as always there was a catch and that was the allegedly rumored Cyberpunk 2077 System Requirements .

In a 50 minute demo, the devs have shifted the focus of the core gunplay to the RPG, having everyone wondering about the PC requirements of the game. We all are aware of the diverse visuals the game will have and the open vast world, taking into the account the player choice and player customization and so much more. All of this certainly requires quite a lot of memory to process. Add that with the recently surfaced news of Cyberpunk 2077 system requirements and the hype bar seems to have been lowered.

Cyberpunk 2077 System Requirements

  • CPU: Intel i7-8700K @ 3.70 GHz
  • CPU SPEED: Info
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • VIDEO CARD: GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
  • PIXEL SHADER: 5.1
  • VERTEX SHADER: 5.1
  • DEDICATED VIDEO RAM: 4 GB

On that very note, let us clear the air by adding that these are not the official specs for the game and in fact, these originate from a rumor, which by the way had perfect timing. That is why the news of these specs seems to have gained quite the attention.

We expect the system specs to be sky high for Cyberpunk 2077. Utilising an adapted Witcher 3’s, Red Engine 3 graphics engine, the recommended requirements will likely include an Intel i7 CPU or top end AMD Zen processor. The GPU needed to achieve reliable frame rates at 1080p screen resolution for Cyberpunk 2077 will be around the GTX 980 mark or a top end AMD Radeon. Bare in mind it will release in a few years time. 16GB system memory will also be the normal recommended requirement for Cyberpunk. with 8GB RAM being a minimum.”

So while there still can be doubts, it is to be understood that not many gamers out there have an Intel Core i7 8700K processor along with a 1080Ti GPU . The devs and publishers understand that. If there is more assurance, you should know that games, when developed, are run on the highest possible settings, to benchmark them at maximum level. That is why high-end systems are required when in the final version, the games are notched down to the commercial level for the consumers to be able to play them. It is also made sure that the games are runnable over various specs ranges.

So, until the game actually rolls out, we can not certain about these rumored specs to be the only one. Having said that even if 1080ti is in the settings, it would probably be it the higher end and not at the lower end.

So rest assured if you have a gaming PC, not the 8th Gen i7 with 1080Ti, even then you will be able to play the game, with flying colors.

Here’s a chance to win a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Cyberpunk 2077 Edition

GOG has a very fancy video card for us to give away.

The other day, PC Gamer’s community team got a holomessage from GOG.com—really an email, probably, but that’s not very cyber—to ask if they wanted to give away a Cyberpunk 2077 Edition GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. As you can guess, they said “Yes, that sounds extremely cyber” or something to that effect, because now we’ve got a very expensive graphics card to raffle off: This limited edition yellow and blue GPU goes for $1,600.

For a chance to win it, head to this forum thread and follow the brief instructions to enter.

As the provider of this shiny and very powerful prize, GOG would like you to know that pre-ordering Cyberpunk 2077 on GOG.com sends your money directly to developer CD Projekt Red, as it and GOG have the same parent company.

Regardless of the storefront, we’re always wary of pre-ordering big games, but we’ve always liked GOG and its DRM-free policy. Note, though, that you don’t have to buy anything for a chance to win this GPU. Hell, you could win it and use it solely to run animated wallpapers in Wallpaper Engine. It’s your life! You can do whatever you want with your Turing architecture GPUs—I believe it says that in the Magna Carta.

Cyberpunk 2077 was originally scheduled to release last month, but was delayed earlier this year. It isn’t too far away, though: The new release date is September 17.

This giveaway ends on June 1, so get your entry in before then if you hope to increase your PC’s cyberness. You can read the complete sweepstakes rules in the forum thread.

Tyler has spent over 1,000 hours playing Rocket League, and slightly fewer nitpicking the PC Gamer style guide. His primary news beat is game stores: Steam, Epic, and whatever launcher squeezes into our taskbars next.

Can my computer run Cyberpunk 2077?

By Cliff Henjum June 17, 2019

Cyberpunk 2077 pretty much won E3 2019 with its full trailer and introduction of Keanu Reeves being an important character throughout the story, so now it’s got everybody asking “Will my PC be able to play Cyberpunk 2077?” At first glance, the game looks absolutely breathtaking, but so far we’ve only really seen cutscenes so it’s difficult to fully predict the end result of the graphics capabilities. CD Projekt Red gave the community a lot of information about the upcoming title, but the official system requirements are yet to be released.

Cyberpunk 2077 is being developed using the latest version (4) of REDengine which was also used for popular titles such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. Although The Witcher 3 released in 2015, and Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t releasing until 2020, we can still use its system requirements as a basis for predicting the upcoming requirements for Cyberpunk 2077. While it’s a huge jump from the GeForce GTX 770 recommended GPU requirement, we believe that the minimum GPU for Cyberpunk might be somewhere closer to the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. This is a huge jump in GPU power, but with what we’ve seen from the E3 videos/trailers, it is plausible that players will need an epic computer to enjoy Cyberpunk 2077.

We will continue to update this page as the release date of Cyberpunk 2077 approaches. Stay tuned for up to date system requirement information.
