‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Companions Will Massively Change Quests And Playthroughs, Says CD Projekt

Last updated В 2:26 PM ,В Wednesday September 11 2019 GMT+1

Cyberpunk 2077 really does sound like it’s shaping up to the biggest Western RPG since. well, probably since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. When CD Projekt RED lends its talents to a title, it’s clear that there’s a certain commitment to quality and scale that a lot of other developers just don’t come close to touching.

We’ve already heard plenty about the in-depth character customisation, multiple possible origin stories for your character, diverse romance options, unique skills, lifepaths, and plenty more that makes the hotly-anticipated 2020 release sound like the closest a video game has ever come to capturing the spirit and scope of a table top RPG. Just in case your hype hadn’t yet reached fever-pitch, recent comments from CDPR reveal even more depth to Cyberpunk 2077. It’s almost getting silly at this point.

CDPR spoke a lot about the various lifepaths and options you’ll have when it comes to tackling quests around E3 and Gamescom, with Cyberpunk 2077’s Quest Director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz revealing that you’ll probably need at least three playthroughs before you see everything the game has to offer.

Speaking about the various choices you’ll have in the game, he explained at the time, “you feel more in the character, I feel, if you have these kinds of elements. And also it helps with the replayability of the game, because in order to fully experience all the paths, you will have to play at least three times.”

A recent Q&A with CDPR Senior Quest Designer Philipp Weber recently went into greater detail regarding how exactly your various choices and actions can alter the course of the game so dramatically (via VG247). He revealed that both lifepaths and any companion characters you may have by your side at the time can greatly alter the flow of a quest, forcing you to adapt to how you might approach certain situations.

“As quest designers we were already used to nonlinear stories, so having a character like V gave us more of what we already like to do,” Weber wrote. “The lifepaths are actually one of my favorite features, because they just give us more roleplaying opportunities. A Nomad can of course solve some problems much better than a Corpo, but put him into a board room and he might not really have the best way to lead a conversation the way he wants to.”

Leaving aside the thrilling review that Cyberpunk 2077 will have both gangland shootouts and board room showdowns, Weber continued, “So when we come up with challenges, we also like to think how different lifepaths could solve them effectively. This will hopefully give players lots of motivation to play the game multiple times, because they can have a completely new experience.”

Weber further explained that it’s not just lifepaths and your own decision-making that will affect the outcome of certain scenarios in Cyberpunk 2077. Apparently, your optional companions will also be able to influence the world – sometimes whether you want them to or not. Be careful when picking your friends, I guess.

“It essentially means having to implement a good chunk of this quest two times, because we of course want to have a very different experience if you have someone with you,” Weber reveled. “They will take part in dialogues and the whole story can go into a different direction if they’re there or not. So in some ways it can feel like playing a completely new quest.”

Weber concluded that it’s an awful lot of work to try and implement all these varying scenarios, but made it clear that it’s ultimately worth it so that the team can make quests that offer different experiences depending on who’s playing. Cyberpunk 2077 lands April 16 2020, and I cannot wait.

Romance in Cyberpunk 2077 Will Be like in the Witcher but Better

Some screenshots of the Lead Quest Designer for Cyberpunk 2077 talking about the impact of romance on gameplay were posted to Reddit, but it gets even better.

The screenshots posted on Reddit, show Cyberpunk 2077’s Lead Quest Designer, Paweł Sasko, saying that a player’s behavior when it comes to romance will make a difference in gameplay. He compared it to The Witcher 3 and mentioned the different endings one could see based on the previous choices made. This on its own already sounds great, but one GameSpot interview later and it sounds even more interesting.

As for romances, throughout the game players will meet lots of characters with their own goals, motivations and needs. Sometimes those goals align with what V is trying to achieve and, depending on the player’s decisions, it may spark interest on the side of the NPC. Side characters won’t fall for V in every scenario though. When something is not right, they may choose friendship over a romantic relationship. The sexual orientation of a given NPC also plays a role in such interactions. In The Witcher III, Geralt was a defined character who had a very clearly defined sexuality–in Cyberpunk, the choice of romantic partner is a part of freedom of play, that’s why the game provides more options, going beyond heterosexual.

The characters around you will take note of your actions and even if you never interacted with them, they might be cold and uninterested because of the misaligned goals and motivations.

It’s also completely understandable that you will be able to play with which ever sexual orientation you want and that the characters around you have their own preferences. In my opinion this is the perfect way to do it, it’s in no way forced and feels natural in the game world.

Sasko continues, “Even in the world of Cyberpunk, relationships matter a lot. They are easier to have in some ways, and in the same time harder to cultivate. Players’ choices define how many relationships V is going to have–but some preferences are impossible to change, almost how it is in real life.

The Witcher 3 had a really interesting way of dealing with your lovers finding out you’re seeing both of them. With that in mind, I don’t think it’s far-fetched that cheating on a loved one in Cyberpunk 2077 could have repercussions ranging from just getting dumped all the way to your angry ex ordering a hit on you.

It’s interesting how much thought is being put into the relationships, a characters needs and beliefs. Cyberpunk feels less like a game and more like an entire living and breathing world.

If CD Projekt Red manages to deliver on all of their promises, Cyberpunk 2077 will hands down be the most innovative and deep game ever made.

Cyberpunk 2077’s character creation system won’t have gender options

CD Projekt Red recently revealed that Cyberpunk 2077’s character creation system won’t allow players to choose their character’s gender. This is a big deal for LGBT gamers and, hopefully, a sign the company’s committed to being more inclusive.

The news comes from a Metro interview with Marthe Jonkers, lead concept artist on the game. When asked about the “difficult subject” of “gender and trans issues,” and the company’s social media controversies (we’ll get to that), Jonkers responded:

Of course, if you tackle certain subjects then you will expect people to have an opinion about it and we respect that. And it’s good that people give us feedback. And our character creation menu, for instance, compared to the last demo we now give you so many more options. For instance, you don’t choose your gender anymore.

You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character’ you now choose a body type. Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want. So you choose your body type and we have two voices, one that’s male sounding, one is female sounding. You can mix and match. You can just connect them any way you want. And then we have a lot of extra skin tones and tattoos and hairstyles. So we really want to give people the freedom to make their own character and play the way they want to play.

TNW online events

Our Couch Conferences bring together industry experts to discuss what’s next

This is great for all gamers. If the company responsible for one of the greatest video games of all time, The Witcher 3, thinks that people who identify as trans, non-binary, and gender-fluid are important enough to merit consideration from their development staff, then there’s hope that others will start to see transfolk too.

It may not be a giant victory – nobody’s going to give CD Projekt Red a GLAAD Award for removing binary gender limitations from a video game – but it’s a start. And, considering CD Projekt Red’s already on shaky ground with the LGTB community and our allies, it’s probably an important one for the company too.

Last year two Twitter accounts owned by CD Projekt Red made the transgender struggle the butt of jokes. The official Cyberpunk2077 Twitter account posted a joke – “did you just assume their gender?!” – in response to a user’s use of the word “guys.” And the Good Old Games (GOG) Twitter account (GOG is owned by CD Projekt Red) posted “ Classic PC Games #WontBeErased on our watch. Yeah, how’s that for some use of hashtags.”

As Polygon’s William Antonelli points out, these are examples of hate speech. They directly associate identifying as transgender or non-binary with being self-deluded or disingenuous. In their excellent article on the controversy, they write:

The idea is that to identify as nonbinary is as ridiculous as saying you’re an inanimate object. In other words, anyone who does so is either stupid, or lying. It’s another joke that few people actually find funny as much as they like having their prejudices confirmed, and it’s effective at making the very existence of transfolk seem like a joke.

For its part CD Projekt Red gave a pseudo-apology for the comment, stating it was sorry people were offended (the corporate equivalent of when your parents tell you to apologize for calling your little sister stupid, so you say “I’m sorry you’re stupid”).

Sorry to all those offended by one of the responses sent out from our account earlier. Harming anyone was never our intention.

Perhaps the company felt like it was between a rock and a hard place. Maybe it issued the half-hearted apology so as not to further offend the most vocal of its customer demographics – the infinitely easily-offended legion of angry gamers who incur apoplectic fits of rage at the mere thought of someone they don’t identify with being offended. Cue Alanis Morissette.

Maybe the company just isn’t very good at apologizing.

Either way, it’s indicative of a shift in gaming culture. Gearbox and 2K are about to launch Borderlands 3 , the continuation of one of the most queer-friendly gaming franchises around, and LGBT-themed gaming events are having a bit of a moment in 2019.

If CD Projekt Red can stay classy on social media, the best AAA game of 2020 (it’s at least a contender right?) might also be among the most inclusive.

Romance In Cyberpunk 2077 Is Similar To Witcher 3, But It Makes A Few Changes Too

Last week, screenshots of a private Twitter exchange with Cyberpunk 2077 lead quest designer Paweł Sasko were posted to Reddit, which revealed further details about how romance would work in the upcoming game. We reached out to CD Projekt Red to confirm the details and, in the process, learned a bit more about the Deus Ex-like RPG.

“As for romances, throughout the game players will meet lots of characters with their own goals, motivations and needs,” Sasko wrote in a statement to GameSpot. “Sometimes those goals align with what V is trying to achieve and, depending on the player’s decisions, it may spark interest on the side of the NPC. Side characters won’t fall for V in every scenario though. When something is not right, they may choose friendship over a romantic relationship. The sexual orientation of a given NPC also plays a role in such interactions. In The Witcher III, Geralt was a defined character who had a very clearly defined sexuality–in Cyberpunk, the choice of romantic partner is a part of freedom of play, that’s why the game provides more options, going beyond heterosexual.”

The earlier Twitter exchange did compare Cyberpunk 2077’s romance to The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, but it didn’t clarify just how similar. Now we know that in Cyberpunk 2077, much like The Witcher III, you can outright fail to attain a romantic connection with someone. However, unlike The Witcher III, not all romances are available to you. Sasko mentions that sexual orientation plays a role in whether a romance can be successful. That means some (or perhaps all) of the characters have a predetermined sexuality and gender, and won’t mold themselves to fit whatever type of character you’re roleplaying.

“Even in the world of Cyberpunk, relationships matter a lot,” Sasko continues. “They are easier to have in some ways, and in the same time harder to cultivate. Players’ choices define how many relationships V is going to have–but some preferences are impossible to change, almost how it is in real life. We believe that this is one of the key factors that makes characters feel genuine, natural, and real. We pay a great deal of attention to characters in the story, as they are the main pillars of the plot. And also because of that I should not say more about the topic, not to spoil anything for our players.”

The Witcher III has a fairly humorous moment if you try to romance both Triss and Yennefer, ultimately punishing you for trying to be with both of them. In the same way, Sasko implies there are real consequences if V has many relationships. Though Sasko did not confirm, it seems like several NPCs will be okay with V being polyamorous (or having a fling or two on the side) while others will only enter into a romantic relationship with V if they stay faithful. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Cyberpunk 2077 is scheduled to release April 16, 2020 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Cyberpunk 2077’s ESRB Rating Reveals Genitalia Customization

The ESRB rating for Cyberpunk 2077 reveals an interesting detail about the character customization.

As CD Projekt Red’s (CDPR) upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 game approaches its release date, various rating boards all over the world have been giving the game mature and adult ratings based on its themes, content, and graphic gameplay. Now, it seems that the United States’ Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has given Cyberpunk 2077 a Mature (M17+) rating while explaining why and how the game deserved such a rating.

Aside from mentioning some of the more obvious aspects like strong language, violence, drug consumption, gore, and more, ESRB also touched upon the game’s customization features and how players will be able to customize their character’s genitals. “Players can select a gender and customize their character; customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals,” ESRB has stated. In other words, based on the rating board’s official statement, Cyberpunk 2077‘s players will have the freedom to customize the playable character’s sex organs and private parts as they see fit.

To say that such a customization feature is unique and interesting would be a heavy understatement. Other games that have a character customization feature normally allow players to customize a character’s face, hair, body art, size, gender, and so on. At most, even some MMORPGs like Final Fantasy XIV allow players to customize their character’s breast size. With Cyberpunk 2077 however, it seems that CDPR took things a step further and wasn’t afraid to allow players extra customization of a character’s genitals. Nonetheless, even with such customization option, it would make sense why the ESRB added that to its Mature rating of the game.

Not too long ago, Cyberpunk 2077‘s official Twitter account announced an event scheduled for June 11. Only known as Night City Wire, nothing else was shared, meaning that it’s safe to assume CDPR will talk about anything, including possible character customization. Of course, although the development team may not necessarily talk about the whole genital aspect, they might still talk about the freedom that players will get when it comes to general character customization.

Cyberpunk 2077 launches on September 17, 2020, for PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

Cyberpunk 2077 ESRB Rating Reveals Adult Content

A new ESRB rating of Cyberpunk 2077 reveals more of the game’s adult content, including intense scenes of violence and explicit sexual content.

Despite a lengthy delay pushing the game back from its April release date to a much later September debut, Cyberpunk 2077 remains potentially the most highly-anticipated game of the entire year alongside The Last of Us 2. From the varied combat styles and insane amount of role-playing potential to the visually astounding open-world and deeply mature storyline, it’s looking more and more likely that it’ll be one for the history books when it drops this fall.

Luckily, it seems fans won’t have to wait until then to know exactly what kind of content they’re getting themselves into when picking up a copy of Cyberpunk 2077, with a recent ESRB rating beginning to shed some light on just how adult CD Projekt Red’s newest creation is. Within the certification, it seems a number of different elements are picked up on as being definitely targeted towards older audiences, with the ESRB referencing strong violence and plenty of explicit sexual scenes.

Designating the title an unsurprising M rating, the reasoning behind the decision lists a number of mature elements featured in the game. According to the certification, players engage in numerous intense gun battles, while also getting access to melee weapons which they can use to “stab enemies and, in some cases, dismember them.” It goes on to clarify that “combat is frenetic, with frequent gunfire, cries of pain, explosions, and blood-splatter effects. Some locations depict mutilated corpses with open chest cavities and/or exposed organs/entrails.” Evidently, combat will feature intense violence, while the twisted underbelly of Night City will feature some disturbing content.

This is merely the beginning, however, as the rating moves on to discuss character creation. According to the ESRB, “customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals.” It then discusses the sexual content in the game, stating that Cyberpunk depicts “partially nude characters moaning suggestively while moving through various positions. Some scenes contain brief depictions of thrusting motions; other scenes depict a character’s head moving towards a partner’s crotch.” Much like in The Witcher series, it seems sex will be a significant aspect in Cyberpunk 2077, allowing the player to hire prostitutes and form romantic connections with central story characters.

Alongside this, the rating highlights that a number of fictional and real drugs can be seen in the game, stating “characters taking puffs/hits from a state-altering inhaler/stimulant; an animated billboard ad depicts a man snorting speed.” Apparently, players can also get severely drunk and can even drive cars while under the influence. Evidently, Cyberpunk is not backing down on the mature content, which, knowing CD Projekt Red’s reputation, is far from a massive surprise.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases September 17, 2020 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.

Cyberpunk 2077 ESRB Rating Summary Provides New Details

The Cyberpunk 2077 ESRB rating has been recently updated, providing some new details on the game.

The game’s rating summary has been finally made available on the ESRB website, providing a new overview of the game and some new details regarding its content. As repeatedly hinted by the development team, Cyberpunk 2077 will not hold back on violence or any theme.

During one quest, players assist a character by hammering nails through his hands and feet; screaming sounds and blood effects accompany the scene. The game contains nudity and sexual material: Players can select a gender and customize their character; customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals. Players can encounter events where they have the option to engage in sexual activities with other main characters or prostitutes—these brief sex scenes (from a first-person perspective) depict partially nude characters moaning suggestively while moving through various positions. Some scenes contain brief depictions of thrusting motions; other scenes depict a character’s head moving towards a partner’s crotch. The game contains frequent depictions and references to fictional drugs, including characters taking puffs/hits from a state-altering inhaler/stimulant; an animated billboard ad depicts a man snorting speed. Some sequences allow the player to drink alcoholic beverages repeatedly until the screen distorts; player’s character can also drive cars while drunk.

Yesterday, it has been confirmed that the Cyberpunk 2077 “Night City Wire” event is coming our way on June 11th, around the time this year’s E3 would have been held. It’s not yet clear what the event will be about, but it’s likely that we will finally see more of the game in action.

Cyberpunk 2077 launches on September 17th, 2020 worldwide on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A free Xbox Series X update has also been announced.

Cyberpunk 2077’s ESRB rating reveals interesting features

Cyberpunk 2077 is a few months away, set to release in September. In the meantime, the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) got their hands on the game and released a few details about what to expect.

Based on the ESRB‘s Mature 17+ rating for Cyberpunk 2077, we know the following graphic content will be depicted:

  • Blood and Gore
  • Intense Violence
  • Nudity
  • Strong Language
  • Strong Sexual Content
  • Use of Drugs and Alcohol

Along with the rating, the ESRB wrote a summary to explain the overall rating. The summary includes some details about the game, detailing some interesting character customization options and other activities characters get into during the game.

One note that sticks out is the in-depth character customization. We’re talking never before seen levels of customization here.

Players can select a gender and customize their character; customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals.

Missions can also get a little violent, as one of them has you “assist a character by hammering nails through his hands and feet.”

We also know there will be shooting, guns, blood, fictional drugs, real drugs, and explicit language. To be honest, we expect nothing less.

One other interesting thing to note is a bullet point about in-game purchases. GameStar asked CD Projekt Red about this and learned that Cyberpunk 2077 will NOT have any in-game purchases. The “microtransactions” statement refers to upcoming DLCs and expansions for the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia on September 17. An Xbox One X version will be coming at a later date.

Cyberpunk 2077 ESRB rating details various adult activities, including head

Close your door and get a chair under the handle, the Cyberpunk 2077 ESRB rating has revealed various in-game adult activities that your parents absolutely cannot see.

It appears that Cyberpunk 2077 will open with some nudity as the Cyberpunk 2077 will allow you to “select a gender and customize their character; customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals.”

Yes, Conan Exile finally has competition.

Anyways, as for more things your ancestors wouldn’t approve of, players will be able to experience numerous adult interactions with ladies of the night that will depict r-rated activities from a first-person perspective.

The Cyberpunk 2077 ESRB rating reveals that these exchanges of money for the dance-with-no-pants “depict partially nude characters moaning suggestively while moving through various positions.”

The description states that these interactions are brought to life through “brief depictions of thrusting motions; other scenes depict a character’s head moving towards a partner’s crotch.”

Now, sorry for the blue balls, but you’ll have to wait quite a while if you’re going to be someone who’ll actually enjoy all the sookies and hawnies on your virtual boabies. Unfortunately for you, Cyberpunk 2077 will not be releasing until September.

Cyberpunk 2077’s ESRB Rating Mentions In-Game Purchases

Don’t worry, it’s not what you think.

The ESRB rating for CD Projekt Red’s next massive RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, is officially here. Interestingly, it references in-game purchases, which has raised some eyebrows amongst gamers.

Thankfully, it doesn’t seem as though Cyberpunk 2077 will feature any in-game goods that you can buy for real-world money, as least not according to a CDPR rep who spoke with Twinfinite.

As reported by the publication, the rep explained that “the ‘in-game purchases’ descriptor is now required for games that may receive expansions in the future.”

We’ve already known for a while that CDPR is planning additional expansions in the future, so there you have it – those “in-game purchases” are not microtransactions. Hooray!

Credit: CD Projekt Red

Just last month, the company recently a Q&A session with investors in Poland where DLC for the game came up. As translated by VGC, it seems we can expect “no less DLC than The Witcher 3 had,” according to Adam Kiciński, CD Projekt president.

As for when we can expect to see DLC in relation to the game’s launch, Kiciński said we can expect “a similar scenario to The Witcher 3”. In case you’re not up to date with how The Witcher 3 handled DLC, we were treated to a number of free updates along with two massive paid expansions: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.

Credit: CD Projekt Red

There’s also going to be multiplayer for Cyberpunk, which is also sounding pretty darn exciting. CD Projekt Red is treating the multiplayer aspect as an entirely separate game with a dedicated group of game devs working on it. More than likely, we will be seeing microtransactions in the multiplayer, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 will either be sexy or incredibly awkward. One thing’s for certain: it’ll be graphic. The Entertainment Software Rating Board has published a description of what players can expect from the game, which is one of the year’s most anticipated releases. The on-the-box warnings include “Blood and Gore;” “Intense Violence;” “Nudity;” “Strong Language;” “Strong Sexual Content;” and “Use of Drugs and Alcohol.”

A first-person, open-world RPG set in the futuristic Night City, players will get into all kinds of mischief in their Cyberpunk adventure. Shootouts, stabbings, and dismemberments are hardly shocking, but there are plenty of surprises in the rating summary.

“Some locations depict mutilated corpses with open chest cavities and/or exposed organs/entrails,” the summary reads. “During one quest, players assist a character by hammering nails through his hands and feet; screaming sounds and blood effects accompany the scene.” Sounds like a crucifixion.

While choosing the player character’s gender expression and appearance, “customization can include depictions of breasts, buttocks, and genitalia, as well as various sizes and combinations of genitals.” The game will feature “brief” but explicit first-person sex scenes, including oral sex. It’ll also depict heavy use of fictional, “state-altering” drugs and the option to drive drunk.

“We really want to make a video game that’s really inclusive,” senior concept artist Marthe Jonkers told Metro last year . “You don’t choose your gender anymore. You don’t choose, ‘I want to be a female or male character.’ You now choose a body type. Because we want you to feel free to create any character you want.”

Games like Grand Theft Auto V and Wolfenstein: The New Order are among those that have used drug sequences and sex scenes effectively in the past decade; these things will always have a place in the medium. But it’ll be interesting to see how Cyberpunk 2077‘s anything-goes hyperrealism goes over with gaming audiences.

Cyberpunk 2077 Has Received ‘Mature’ Rating From ESRB

The following article contains minor spoilers for Cyberpunk 2077.

CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 has officially been rated, and it’s not a game you’re going to want to play with your nan. The upcoming RPG, which takes place in a dystopian future with an obsession for body modification, was never going to be an E for Everyone, but the ESRB’s official rating has revealed just how dark the story is going to get.

For those who’ve played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it’s not a surprise to see that Cyberpunk 2077 will feature a lot of sex. The Witcher 3 had numerous sexytime opportunities, though Cyberpunk will be taking it one step further – with first person view sex scenes.

According to the official ESRB rating and description, Cyberpunk will give players the opportunity to “engage in sexual activities with other main characters or prostitutes.”

Again confirming that sex scenes will be in first person, the description says the encounters will “depict partially nude characters moaning suggestively while moving through various positions.”

The rating continues: “Some scenes contain brief depictions of thrusting motions; other scenes depict a character’s head moving towards a partner’s crotch.”

(Before you get too excited, no, you can’t have sex with Johnny Silverhand, the character/microchip-in-your-head companion played by the one and only Keanu Reeves).

The depth of the combat is also mentioned, with the rating stating: “Combat is frenetic, with frequent gunfire, cries of pain, explosions, and blood-splatter effects. Some locations depict mutilated corpses with open chest cavities and/or exposed organs/entrails.”

As for gore…well, the ESRB writes: “During one quest, players assist a character by hammering nails through his hands and feet; screaming sounds and blood effects accompany the scene.”
