Watch Dogs 2 Uses EasyAntiCheat – Monitors Systems, Potentially Prevents Modding

Watch Dogs 2 has recently made its debut, encountering both critical acclaim and inversely proportional sales – at least for now. The game features a living open world, achieving what the original promised but never delivered, with both single-player and multi-player modes being praised by their quality.

And when there is a semblance of multiplayer, there must also be an anti-cheating mechanism. Watch Dogs 2 makes use of EasyAntiCheat, which has, embedded in its TOS – and even on its features page – a field that claims “Client data analysis to identify anomalies in the game process runtime” is used to enforce it anti-cheat detection mechanisms. What it basically means is that EasyAntiCheat installs a driver in kernel mode and a service that monitors your systems’ operating files (when Watch Dogs 2 is running). This mechanism is also running even when you’re in single-player-only – and even offline – modes, meaning that you’re not getting out of its crosshairs no matter how you are playing the game. The addition of file-integrity checks at the start of the game, so as to detect any changes to the games’ files also precludes modding, with some injection-type modding also finding troubles in being able to access the game, due to it checking game memory and system memory as well. Popular applications such as Afterburner and OBS have their overlay and recording capabilities disabled, and Cheat Engine is also not working – though that just means EasyAntiCheat is doing its job.

1. EasyAntiCheat is not compatible with any anti-cheat programs other than VAC, therefore you must not run EasyAntiCheat if you wish to play with any other anti-cheat at the same time. The user is fully responsible in case his/her game account or cdkey gets banned or refused by the game, EasyAntiCheat or any other anti-cheat.

2. EasyAntiCheat finds game cheats by scanning games’ memory, the system memory and verifying original game files on disk to ensure they have not been modified. Only games’ folders (and subfolders) are verified to contain original game data. EasyAntiCheat may replace or remove permanently any modified or custom game files found in games’ folders (and subfolders). The use of any custom models, textures, sprites or other modified game files may lead to permanent ban if they can be considered to give the player an unfair advantage over other players.

3. EasyAntiCheat will take screenshots of your game screen and upload them on public servers, viewable to everyone, if the server provider wishes so. The author of this software and EasyAntiCheat takes no responsibility of screenshots captured outside the game screen. If any personal or harmful information is captured into a screenshot, the user is fully responsible of the happened incident and any consequences it may result in. (In case this happens to you, please inform your server provider to remove unwanted screenshots from the server.)

4. EasyAntiCheat will scan system registry to detect forbidden modifications, settings or other features enabled to the game or graphic card drivers.

The EasyAntiCheat TOS, as you can see, does a pretty good job of exculpating the company, by making it loud and clear (as loud and clear can be when you’re talking about TOS that no-one-reads-but-definitely-should) what the application does. Of course, that also means that unless you’re privy to bypassing this kind of mechanisms, you have no way of saying “No” to these other than not playing the game.

It needs to be said EasyAntiCheat is a legit anti-hacking, anti-cheating software, though – it’s been used in eSports (such as Counter Strike, Warface, and others) for years, and professionals willingly submit themselves to this kind of constraints and TOS in an environment that is, understandably, controlled (and apparently, only in this kind of environments – and Counter Strike ones in particular – does the application take and upload screenshots, at the behest of the organizing party). But it seems that this anti-cheat mechanism is operating even in single-player offline mode, which simply removes from the player the ability to maintain his desired privacy. There should always be an option not to agree with the installation of this kind of applications, even if that were to mean no access to multi-player modes. I, for one, would make that trade willingly.

This looks like a possible way for Ubisoft to protect its monetizing programs with in-game purchases, which abound in Watch Dogs 2 – a way to prevent players from using exploits in the game that could harm the sales of in-game items.

Update Dec 2nd: For a way to disable EasyAntiCheat in Watch_Dogs 2, see this article.

Pit Bulls: What’s Hype, What’s Not

Do pit bulls get a bad rap? Experts weigh in.

Doberman pinschers, rottweilers, and German shepherds topped lists of dogs some considered dangerous in the not-too-distant past.

These days, pit bulls often make headlines and it’s rarely good news. If it isn’t about an attack on a child or a shooting by police, it’s a tale of neglect or abuse. The heat of such reports has forged a frightening image of the pit bull as having a hair-trigger temper and a lock-jawed bite.

But pit bull advocates and some experts say the dogs get a bad rap. They say the dogs are not inherently aggressive, but in many cases suffer at the hands of irresponsible owners drawn to the dog’s macho image who encourage aggression for fighting and protection.

Indeed, the ASPCA web site gives the breed an endorsement that could fit a golden retriever. It says, “A well-socialized and well-trained pit bull is one of the most delightful, intelligent, and gentle dogs imaginable.”

In general, pit bulls aren’t aggressive with people but are “less tolerant” of other dogs than many other breeds, says Pamela Reid, PhD, vice president of the ASPCA’s Animal Behavior Center in New York. They also have “great tenacity. They put their mind to something, and they do it. That’s what makes them great dogs for sports like weight pulling. They are very strong, athletic animals,” Reid says.

Owning a pit bull should not be taken lightly. Some cities and towns have banned the breed. You also may face rising insurance rates or cancellation of your policy, difficulty renting, and the watchful eye of neighbors and passersby.

Origins and Nature

The American Pit Bull Terrier is technically the only true pit bull, although the American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier are often referred to as pit bulls. So are a handful of other breeds and mixed breeds.

Pit bulls were originally used for bull- and bear-baiting, and later were bred to fight dogs in an arena. They had “a fabulous reputation early on and were considered the ideal family pet because they were so good with people,” Reid says.

“Petey” from The Little Rascals was a pit bull. Helen Keller, President Theodore Roosevelt, and Fred Astaire all had the breed as family pets.

But the tide turned in the late 1990s, when pit bulls became popular among people who “weren’t focused on the positive attributes of the breed – they were looking for a strong, scary-looking dog,” Reid says.

National Attention

The abuse of pit bulls drew national attention in 2007, when Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty to running a dog-fighting operation. He spent nearly two years in federal prison.

Jim Gorant, a Sports Illustrated senior editor and author of The Lost Dogs, a book that documents Vick’s dogs and their path to redemption, says pit bulls are caught in a self-perpetuating cycle of incrimination and bad ownership.

“Every dog is an individual,” Gorant says. “Pit bulls are just dogs and if they are not raised properly and socialized and treated right, they can have behavior problems. But they aren’t any more problematic than any other breed by nature.”

Bites, Bans, and More

Opponents argue that pit bulls are more likely to attack. But the ASPCA, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and some other groups have recommend against breed-specific laws. They cite a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Association on Sept. 15, 2000.В

The study, which focused on fatal dog attacks, notes difficulties identifying various breeds (particularly mixed breeds) and in calculating a bite rate. The researchers noted that there isn’t consistent data on breed populations and bites, especially when the injury isn’t serious enough to require an ER visit.

Reid says many things can lead to a tendency toward aggression. That includes breeding dogs for protection, dog В fighting, social status, or financial gain. Abuse, neglect, chaining, tethering, and inadequate obedience training and supervision also make the list.

Myths About Pit Bulls

Here are three myths about pit bulls:

They have locking jaws. There’s nothing anatomically different about a pit bulls’ jaw – “they cannot lock,” Reid says. But like other terriers, “they are more likely than other breeds to grab a hold of something and to shake.” It doesn’t mean they won’t let go, but owners need to know how to break up a fight.

They can tolerate huge amounts of pain. “Pit bulls are incredibly wimpy in many respects – they don’t like to go in the cold and rain,” Reid says. But when aroused or agitated, they may be less responsive to pain.

They’re unpredictable. The popular notion is that pit bulls can be fine their entire lives and suddenly snap and turn on their owner. Reid says that’s no more likely to happen with pit bulls than it is with any other breed.

Considering a Pit Bull?

You’ll need to do more than the average dog owner to counteract negative perceptions. Socializing the dog with people and other animals is key. Here are some other tips:

  • If your pit bull is friendly with other dogs, maintain that socialization by meeting up with friends or going to the dog park, if your dog doesn’t get too rowdy in such settings.
  • Monitor your dog’s play and be prepared to distract your dog if she gets too intimidating. “The ones that are friendly with other dogs are sort of the life of the party, but they can play rough sometimes because they are so strong,” Reid says.
  • If your dog isn’t friendly with other dogs, make sure he’s on a leash and there are no unleashed dogs around.
  • When it comes to other pets, Reid says some pit bulls “are absolutely lovely with other animals – cats and bunnies,” but others are not. Take introductions slowly. “The more you know about the dog, the better off your are,” Reid says.

Responsible pet ownership includes spaying or neutering your pet. That will help decrease some undesirable behavior, such as male dominance aggression.

Looking Ahead

Awareness about pit bulls is growing and more are being adopted, says Stacey Coleman, executive director of the Animal Farm Foundation Inc., a Bangall, N.Y. pit bull advocacy group.

“It has gotten much better for the dogs,” Coleman says. “People have seen that these dogs are out there and deserve help right now.”

Of the 51 pit bulls seized from Vick’s kennels, about 17 have been adopted. About a dozen of those adopted dogs have passed their AKC Canine Good Citizen test and several have become therapy dogs.

Among them is Hector, a dog that is covered with physical scars but is “just great with other dogs, great with kids, and great with people,” Gorant says. Hector frequently visits hospitals, nursing homes, and schools.

If there’s an upside to the Vick case, Gorant hopes it helps sway public opinion because it helps people see pit bulls as victims. But he admits, there’s still “a long way to go.”

“On any given day, probably 10 people get bit by a dog,” Gorant says. “But it’s only news when it’s a pit bull.”

Watch Dogs – QR Codes, hidden messages, Gangstar Assault Rifle, Read-Only

How to find all sixteen QR codes sprinkled throughout Chicago, then finish the bonus hacking mission to unlock a special achievement or trophy.

You might have noticed a few QR codes littered here and there throughout the city as you played through Watch Dogs’ single-player campaign. What’s not so obvious is that a second piece of the code is located nearby, and if you line the camera up correctly you’ll get to listen to a new audio log. Unlock them all and you’ll even get your hands on the Gangstar Assault Rifle, as well as an extra mission that ultimately unlocks the Read-Only achievement.

Watch Dogs QR codes

QR Code 1 – South Parker Square

Get to the intersection by the Food & Liquor building. The code’s just on top of this shop. To access it, walk south down the street, then hack the camera that’s hanging low just above a pair of garage doors. Angle the camera around to look north and scan the code in front of you. Scan the code on your left and you’ll see the message from G1gg1L3s 01.

Hidden Message: Hey DedSec! ┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐

QR Code 2 – North Parker Square

You can find this QR code just a little further up from the one detailed above. You’ll find it on your right as you head north, right next to a For Rent sign. Now look down the alley to your left and you’ll spy a camera on the corner of an old building. Scan the second QR code for your next hidden message.

Hidden Message: DedSec can suck my 8=====>

QR Code 3 – West Side of The Wards

You’ll need a boat for this. Jump into one and then head over to the western part of the district, by the dam as it appears on your map. Look from the west to the east and you’ll soon spot the code. Hack the camera on the dam to scan the code. Now use your mobile to scan in the code to your left to complete the message.

Hidden Message: Don’t QQ if you can’t find me

QR Code 4 – South End of The Wards

Approach the gun shop from the east and come to a halt nearby. Look for the camera that’s on the southern side of the street, mounted on a very old building. If you hack it, you’ll be able to look east to scan in the code, before using your mobile phone to crack the secret code.

Hidden Message: */* U found one! */*

QR Code 5 – West Brandon Docks

You’ll find this next one on the Tidis building at the end of the bridge. Make your way over to the east end of this bridge and then hack the nearby camera to scan in a code. Now use your mobile to discover a new message.

Hidden Message: DedSec? More like DedSUC!

QR Code 6 – East Brandon Docks

Look for the building with a sign that says “Safe Energy Saves You Money”. Go to the petrol station just north-east of this building, then hack the camera on a lamppost. Scan the code in to listen to another audio file, then grab the message with your phone.

Hidden Message: Mark IV style mut****cker!

QR Code 7 – Central Brandon Docks

Head to the train station, then stand on the western stairs that lead up to the platform. Hack the camera on the corner of the nearby building to scan the QR code, then unlock the message using your mobile phone.

Hidden Message: (^._.^) U can findz QR codes!

QR Code 8 – North Brandon Docks

When you get to the QR code, travel east until you’ve passed a pair of tall buildings. The camera you need to hack is on the corner of a nearby building. Scan the code in, then use your phone to get the message via the QR code on the left.

Hidden Message: U R getting WARMER

QR Code 9 – South end of The Loop

Make your way beneath the platform just to the east of the code. Walk towards the northern stairs that take you up onto the platform, but don’t actually go up them. Hack the camera on the wall to your east, scan the code, then use your phone to grab the other piece of the puzzle to your left.

Hidden Message: Can U find D rest?

QR Code 10 – Southwest end of The Loop

Get below the highway until you’re at the point of the shore where the three rivers come together. Hack the camera, and then point it in a south-easterly direction. The QR code is under the freeway. Once you’ve picked it up, use your phone to uncover the next message.

Hidden Message: BadBoy17? Bad, BOY, 17? Really?

QR Code 11 – Northwest island of The Loop

Go to the platform that’s southwest of the code, then wait for the trains to pass. Get up on the tracks and walk northeast. After the bend, get on the platform to your right and then hack the camera on the wall. Angle the camera north to get the QR code into view, then finish the job with your phone.

Hidden Message: Itz all 4 d GIGGLES!

QR Code 12 – Northeast end of The Loop

You’ll find this next code right in the middle of an alley intersection. When you reach the centre of it, walk down the north-east tangent, hack into the wall camera, then scan in the code. Now point your mobile at the monitor and scan it in for another message.

Hidden Message: G1gg1L3s. 1L. IL. Get it?

QR Code 13 – South Central area of Mad Mile

Go east of where the code is, and look high up a building wall to find the camera you need – it’s just over the road from the Chicago Water Tower. There’s actually a pair of cameras here, but you’ll be plugged into the right one if you can connect the code to the west. Now use your mobile phone to decrypt the secret message.

Hidden Message: How U finding these? ಠ_à²

QR Code 14 – Northwest area of Mad Mile

To make things a little easier, you’ll be able to find this code right by one of the fast-travel options unlocked on your map. When you arrive, look for a parking area which has a hackable garage door. Hack into the camera on the building to your right to get the code. Now use your smartphone to finish the job.

Hidden Message: U must werk out. >_

QR Code 15 – Southwest area of Mad Mile

Get into a position just west of the code and over the road. Now look for a camera placed high up a building wall, look east with it, and then take the QR code that’s just to the right of a billboard. Scan in the second part of the code with your phone for the next message.

Hidden Message: o_O O.O O.o O_テウ

QR Code 16 – Pawnee

There’s only one code to find in Pawnee, so once you’ve grabbed it you’re done. Make your way to the damaged bridge and get onto it. Hack the lamppost camera and look at the billboard. Scan in the code, then decrypt the final piece of the puzzle with your phone and you’re done!

(8:> will U be my BFF? 4 realz!

Hack G1gg1L3s

As soon as you’ve nabbed all sixteen QR codes, you’ll get a phone call from a contact at DedSec. Make your way towards the mini-map marker over in Mad Mile. When you get there, you’ll have to hack into the intrusion box that’s stuck to a building, then complete the hacking mini-game. As soon as you’re done, upload the virus into the computer in G1ggL3s’ home to both finish the mission and tick off the Read-Only trophy or achievement.

Introduction and map | QR Codes Watch Dogs Guide

Key points of Watch_Dogs – QR Codes

Special mission – Mission available after scanning all QR Codes.

The red markings on the map above point you to the locations where you can find a QR code, whereas the green ones mark the spots, where there are cameras that you need to use to scan the code.

There are many QR codes in the city, on building walls and the other objects. Each one is a challenge, whose completing unlocks an additional mission connected with the DedSec hacker group. The locations are marked on the map after you unlock the ctOS towers for a given region (apart from one, located in the Pawnee district). On the map, there are 17 codes, where the 17th becomes available after you have scanned the remaining 16. Then, you get a phone call, after which the location of the extra mission becomes available on the map. Each code also adds a special audiolog to your collection. Scanning all of the codes and completing the extra mission is required to complete the game in 100%.

The QR codes marked on the map, in a given area, are distributed among several objects. You need to find the exact spot, from which, after you look in the direction of the code, you will see the whole, in the form of the full square. Here, there always is a camera which you need to use to scan the code, after you hack into it. For each code, there is only one, exclusive camera, which will scan the code correctly – you will then see a red rhomb displayed on the screen that informs you of the option to scan the code. Below, you can find a list of all of the QR codes, along with their descriptions, which point you to the correct camera and the image that shows, which signifies that the scan is ready to be performed.

09-16 | QR Codes Watch Dogs Guide

You gain access to the ninth camera, by standing at the bend of the highway (or below) by hacking into the camera at the edge and then, by panning it to the next ne, at a slightly higher level.

You need to pan the camera as far to the right as you can, to spot camera #9.

The code that you need to scan is small and it is located at the other side of the highway. In the background, above it, you can see a tall skyscraper.

The tenth camera is attached Westwards of the code location, at a considerable altitude, on the edge of the building.

The code is Eastwards of here, on one of the taller buildings. On the left, there is an advertising billboard.

The next camera is on the edge of the antique-stylized building, Northwards of the code.

The code that you need to scan is painted on the apartment blocks arranged in a line, alongside the street.

The twelfth camera is the only one around – it is located on the dam on the left edge of the map. It is best to get a motorboat to get here.

You need to pan the camera along the dam, Southwards, to notice the small code.

The next device is several tens of meters Eastwards of the code location. It is attached to the edge of a building in the alleyway.

The code is very small, at the roof of the building, at the end of the alleyway. It may be necessary to zoom in to scan.

The fourteenth camera is within a quite long distance of the code. It is located on the wall that is enclosed in a wall of the building, under the railway platform and under the white ad with a phone number, on the wall.

The QR Code is on the rooftop of the building, behind which you can see the tall skyscraper.

Camera #15 is attached to the pillar of the bridge across the river, from the point where the code is located.

As you look through the camera at the other back of the river, the pillars of the bridge form the whole picture.

The last camera is the only one in the district of Pawnee, at the beginning end of the bridge under construction. It is attached to the post.

This code does not appear on the map, nor does it do after you approach it. It is consists of two parts – the tunnel mouth and the billboard with the car advertisement.

Watch Dogs – All QR Code Locations Guide

There are a total of 16 QR Code Locations and 1 QR Code Investigation Mission in Watch Dogs.
Finding all QR Codes will unlock the mission and completing the mission will earn you the Read-only Trophy / Achievement. You will also get a new weapon (Tommy Gun) as a reward. To reveal the code locations on your map you must unlock all ctOS towers. The displayed locations aren’t very accurate though and you must find one specific surveillance camera and look at the QR Code from a certain angle. The correct camera is sometimes far away, or can only be activated from an elevated position.

All Codes are saved automatically when you find them. None of them are missable and you can still get them in free roam after beating the story. They are also a requirement for the “They Call Him The Vigilante” Trophy and Achievement.

01-08 | QR Codes Watch Dogs Guide

The QR codes tend to be split between two or more buildings/ objects. You only need to find the spot from which the code looks like the whole thing. From the point marked on the map, you learn only where the code is located – as for the camera that is capable of capturing the whole thing and scan it, you need to find it on your own.

The first camera is on the post, next to the parking lot which is Northwards of the code’s location.

The camera view must have, in its view, the code next to the crane in the docks. Southwards of where the camera is located.

The second camera is located on the edge of the building over the bridge. It is the first one at the edge, attached to the roof.

The QR Code is on the large company containers, across the river.

The third camera is at a level with the second floor, on the edge of the building, virtually above the railway station.

The camera is to be panned in a way that will allow you to see the tall factory chimneys, close to the building.

Camera #4 is close nearby, just one building past the QR Code itself. It is the first camera at the corner of the building on the Southern side.

The camera needs to be panned towards the West, next to the code, you will notice the billboard that reads “RACINE”.

The next camera is to the South of the code, in the middle of the building’s length, on the Western side. It is hanging at a level with the first floor.

The code is at the end of the street. On the screen, you can also see a fragment of the turret that clearly stands out.

The sixth camera is directly across the street, from the spot in which the code is. It is the one on the red-brick building spotted with big windows.

The code across the street is between two buildings.

The next camera is high above the ground, within a short distance to the South, of the spot where there code is. Right below, there is the end side of the railway platform.

The QR Code is Northwards, under the big billboard.

Camera #8 is Westwards of the code on the first building, separated from the rest of the semi-detached red-brick houses.

The two-part code encompasses the buildings in the East, in line with the rooftop of the neighboring line.
