Watch Dogs 2 Review – IGN

These Are the Best Research Upgrades in ‘Watch Dogs 2’

Here are a few of the best perks to kick start your hacking career.В

Watch Dogs 2 is a game focused on hacking into just about anything you can get your digital hands on. Cars, ATMs, construction equipment, personal data from phones, computers, webcams, and more are all a part of your playground while roaming San Francisco … you’ve just got to have the right skills to jump throughout the net, and put yourself in the right place for the job.

That’s where Research comes into play. Available as an application on your phone, Research Upgrades are unlocked with Research Points, which are awarded for increasing your number of followers or by collecting them out in the open world. These allow you to unlock new abilities (both passive and active) for Marcus to use in the field that further increase his capabilities.

Eventually, you’ll be able to unlock almost everything available in the Research trees with enough followers and Research Points, but there’s a few that are more worthwhile than their counterparts. Here are some of our favorites.

Environmental RC (2 Research Points)

Environmental RC is an ability in the Remote Ctrl Research tree that allows you to take control of forklifts, scissor lifts, and cranes with your laptop. This ability is mainly useful for navigating the world or reaching places that would otherwise be off-limits while completing missions, but it can also be used to open secret areas or lift an obstacle blocking your way to a collectible in the open world. It may not be the most useful ability in combat, but it can help you reach a great vantage point for a shootout or to scout an area when tackling objectives in Watch Dogs 2.

Gang Attack (4 Research Points)

Preset in the Social Engineering research tree, Gang Attack allows you to assign any target in San Francisco to one of the gangs preset in the city. This calls in a small group of gang members to attack and eliminate the target you assign them through a hack which is a great way to avoid conflict entirely. If used properly though, this ability can cause massive distractions to blanket an entire area. Say you’re looking to sneak into a guarded facility, for example. You can use Gang Attack to call in a few gang members who will start a shootout with the security guards, who will then call the police, giving you the opportunity to slip in and grab whatever you need from the area.

Hijacker (4 Research Points)

If you want to see everything the large open world of Watch Dogs 2 has to offer, you’ll want to avoid using fast travel so that you are constantly discovering new activities and hidden items. Since walking everywhere isn’t the most ideal situation and vehicles are quite expensive in the game, you may be tempted to borrow a stranger’s car for the afternoon. Stealing a car will almost always get you noticed by people walking by and getting the police set on your trial though, which is where Hijacker comes in. This ability allows you to hack electronic locks on cars instead of picking the lock, making you unnoticeable and quicker when stealing a vehicle in the city.

Proximity Scanner (4 Research Points)

If you haven’t unlocked it already, the Quadcopter is easily the best tool you have at your disposal in Watch Dogs 2 for scouting out objectives and sneaking into buildings undetected. This little guy can be further upgraded with the Proximity Scanner though so that you can tag enemies through walls while controlling the Quadcopter with NetHack. This essentially allows you to scout and detect every single threat in an entire area before coming up with a plan of attack, making it invaluable if you’re looking to sneak your way through or execute the perfect assault on a compound.

Auto-Takedown (2 Research Points)

During your time with Watch Dogs 2 you’re going to have a few run-ins with the police protecting San Francisco no matter how hard you try to avoid getting seen while hacking. Most of these will end with the police chasing you through the streets or over the rooftops too, where it’s extremely difficult to outrun them unless you’ve picked up the proper hacks to counter the ridiculous number of police vehicles they’ll send chasing after you. Here’s where City Disruption abilities come in, like Auto-Takedown. This upgrade will allow you to trigger gates and steam pipes when enemy vehicles pass nearby without losing control of your vehicle to knock your pursers out of the chase. You can also upgrade it once again to hack traffic lights too, creating traffic jams to stop your pursuers.

Watch Dogs 2 – How to get more Followers, level up and earn Research points

The many ways to increase your all-imporant social media standing in missions to open-world activities.

Everyone wants more people following them on social media, and Watch Dogs 2 has made this a central mechanic. Most things you do in the game give DedSec more Followers, which in turn make you a more powerful hacker and expand your options in combat. Here’s how to get more Followers in Watch Dogs 2.

What are Followers used for in Watch Dogs 2?

Followers essentially act like experience points in the game. At a certain threshold of followers, you ‘level up’ and unlock a handful of Research Points, which you can spend how you please in the Research app.

While you can get Research Points by hacking specific points out in the world, they’re usually locked away in difficult places – and so the easiest way to do it is by levelling up by getting more Followers.

It’s also said Followers will unlock new activities in the world, though in our experience they unlocked linearly as you play one Main Operative to the next – most likely due to the fact story missions are one of the most reliable and lucrative sources of Followers.

How to get more Followers in Watch Dogs 2

There are multiple sources of Followers in the game:

Main Operations – This is the most straightforward source of Followers. While the number varies, you will get a healthy number for missions you complete; the early game CyberDriver missions range around 27,000 to 46,000, for example, with similar numbers in later missions. Completing the final mission, Motherload, will net you a cool 402,800 Followers in one go.

Side Operations – Similar to above, these range according to the mission, but are usually in the 5 figures.

Online Operations – Again, these depend on the mission, and range in the 5 figure region. Interestingly these are the only area of the game with difficulty settings, and the harder the mission, the more Followers you get. Remember Online Operations are randomly generated and infinite, so you can keep farming these over and over, and are playable solo, too.

Other multiplayer activities – As well as Online Operations (which can be done solo) participating in multiplayer activities gets you bonus Followers, depending on your performance. Bounty Hunter will get you between 5,000 and 25,000 Followers, while Hacking Invasions range between 4,000 and 15,000. You can enable online activities and have players come to you, or seek them out with the app, and depending on how good you are, could prove to be a quick and easy way to repeatedly get Followers, perhaps more so than doing main story missions.

Multiplayer events can be a decent source of Followers.

Digital Foundry builds and tests its own budget build.

Want more tips? Our Watch Dogs 2 walkthrough and guide provides an overview of everything you can do in the open-world game, from all finding all Key Data locations, unique vehicles and finding hidden gnomes and gnome outfit, through to tips on races, ScoutX, Driver SF and multiplayer. We also have walkthroughs on Trophy and Achievement specific side-quests Ubistolen, $911 and Shadows as well as how to get more Followers and how to make money.

Driver: SF – These short driving missions can net you between 6,600 and 11,000 Followers, depending on your star rating. With some of these missions taking just five minutes to complete, they’re a pretty quick and easy source. The number of stars you receive add up, with extra Followers given to you at certain thresholds, such as a bonus 12,000 Followers at 21 stars, and 25,000 at 50 stars.

ScoutX – Take a snap in a location instructed by the ScoutX will get you 8,000 Followers a pop. While it’s technically a simple task, the small number of Followers means it’s only worth it if you’re in the area, so we wouldn’t recommend chaining them back to back. Your phone will buzz if you’re passing one, or you can check the app to see how far you are from a hotspot.

Races – Completing optional races – Drone, Motocross, Sailboat – will get you a small number of Followers and Cash, depending on the medal, the higher the better. For example, a Motocross race can net you 11,000 Followers for a gold medal if completed under 2 minutes 30 seconds, which isn’t a bad return for your time.

As part of many missions in Watch Dogs 2 you’ll have to solve hacking puzzles. These can range from easy all the way to controller-throwingly difficult, but if you know the basic premise that the puzzles are built on, it will make everything a little easier.

So here’s a quick little how-to for when you need to deal with these puzzles.

The puzzles are essentially the same as the “direct the flow” puzzles that have featured in many games, for example Bioshock but with a modern twist. The idea is that you need to direct the flow of blue energy through the circuits until it reaches an end-point that will unlock whatever you need for the mission objective. You direct the flow by changing the rotation of the junction shapes, and whilst you don’t need to be in NetHack to see the circuit, it makes everything easier. Also, the quadcopter is your friend with these puzzles.

At junctions you’ll typically have one of three shapes:

The Knee – which is a right angled turn that only connects at two points, these are your bread and butter.

The T-Junction – A three pointed junction that looks like a capital T with an elongated top line. These ones are trickier, but a good rule of thumb is to always try connecting them so all 3 points connect to a circuit first.

The Straight – Simple enough, just a straight line, although you’ll often have to adjust these multiple times to send flow through different areas of the puzzle.

Additionally you’ll sometimes get junctions that are locked, to unlock them you need to direct the blue flow so it is going into each side that has a triangle on it. The arrangement of the triangles changes the difficulty of the challenge in unlocking these junctions. Typically though, the first or second one will be the hardest to unlock, and once you get a couple undone, the puzzle will become easier.

Lastly, some of the junctions will have timers on them that if you don’t solve the puzzle in time, will reset themselves back to their original position. This will usually shut down part of your newly unlocked circuit, but this is typically more a mild irritation than a huge set back as you can just put the reset junction back into place.

Other than that, it’s just a case of looking where the flow needs to go, what your options are for getting it there and what’s stopping it. One tip that can help if you’re stuck is to pay attention to the blue flow, it will be visibly moving a certain way. Paying attention to this will make it easier for you to visualise what your next step needs to be.

Good luck, and if you get stuck, our guide has plenty of puzzle breakdowns in it to help you along.

There are a few unique, and occasionally weird, vehicles scattered across the map in Watch Dogs 2 , here’s how to find them all. As a bonus, the first one you find and drive will give you the A Ride to Remember achievement.

Danger Mobile

Yerba Beuna island. If you go to where this map shows, you’ll see it.

Where: Just north-west of Painted Ladies, in an alleyway.

Where: San Mateo, in the restricted area just south of the San Mateo text on the map. There’s a guard and a robot patrolling around it but they shouldn’t cause you too much bother.

Mountain King

Where: In an industrial park just east of Lakeside Park. It’s behind a locked, unclimbable fence. Easiest way to get at it is to take control of the nearby forklift, climb onto that then use it to jump over the fence to hack the terminal and open the gates.

Where: Next to the Nudle campus, underneath the building with the purple SVNR lettering on the side.

To get to the car, go to the left of the SVNR lettering to find a vent on the ground. Send the Jumper through it until you drop out in a garage. There will be a car in here with a wooden board behind it. Hack the car to reverse it into the board and break it to reveal the security terminal behind it. Hack the terminal to unlock the garage with the Dangerzone in it. Head around the building to find the entrance to the underground car park and the car will be in on of the closed garages.

What: Performance – Fast and light car good for cornering and jumps.

Where: The Port of Oakland, in an open crate at the top of a pile of shipping containers, easy to spot. Use the vehicle hack to drive it out of the container.

Whilst Watch Dogs 2 isn’t the most difficult game ever to grace the gaming world, it has its fair share of challenges, so here’s a few tips to help you along the way.

First thing to note is that stealth in this game is useful, but unforgiving as the enemy AI is hyper-aggressive. As soon as you’re spotted, the guards will go into full on kill mode and will try to swarm you from all sides, along with throwing grenades. If you get into a firefight, keep moving at all times and stay in cover.

Second is that whilst all the skills in Watch Dogs 2 are useful to some degree, there are a few that are invaluable no matter the situation and we’d recommend getting them ASAP.

The number one skill above all others would be Distract. Get this one as your first purchase and watch your operations get easier instantly. It’s a dual use skill that can, as it says on the tin, distract an enemy when you’re still sneaking. No matter how close they are to spotting you, hitting them with this will instantly stop them. This makes sneaking a dawdle as you can effectively distract anyone who looks your way, and it lasts a good few seconds. As an extra bonus, any distracted guard will stand still and straight whilst they check their phone, setting them up for a stun shot or melee. Even when you’ve been spotted it’ll cause an ear splitting shriek of feedback in their ears, stopping them shooting and giving you some respite. The upgraded version of this skill, Mass Distract is well worth aiming for as it is damn near essential for the late game operations.

Environmental RC will allow you to take control of scissor lifts, forklifts etc which can greatly boost your potential routes into and out of restricted zones, and also gives you a few more tricks up your sleeve when it comes to any problem solving you might need to do.

Robot Exploits and Security System Shutdown, whilst not immediately useful, you should try to have by the time you hit Haum Sweet Haum in your main operations. They will render all but useless patrolling robots and any laser gates or motion sensors, making your life a lot easier. As a bonus, you can hit the robots with the “love” hack, which will make them aggressively try to love any humans they see, normally leading the guards to attack them and sowing some chaos you can use to sneak by.

Vehicle Hacking is also incredibly useful, even if you just get the first level of it. Being able to move cars without needing to get into them is part of solving a good number of puzzles in the game, as well as a useful distraction technique. One bonus is that you can use this to instantly stop any fleeing vehicle dead, making any chases in the game almost pointless. Hijacker is also incredibly useful as it allows you to open any vehicle remotely, stopping the alarms going off when you steal cars.

Lastly, saving for the quadcopter as early as you can is one of the best moves in the game. Being able to deploy it as a scout and highly maneuverable hacking platform will take a lot of weight off your shoulders and allow you to plan your routes into areas a lot easier.

Watch Dogs 2 Review

Flexible hacking gives this open-world sequel a distinct flavor.

By expanding on a lot of what the first game and its expansion got right and mixing action, stealth, and puzzle gameplay with handy remote-control drones, Watch Dogs 2

One of the chief complaints about the original Watch Dogs was that its “fixer” hacker protagonist, Aiden Pearce, is a bland and unlikeable character. Ubisoft listened and left Pearce in Chicago, picking up in the Bay Area with the much more personable hacker vigilante Marcus Holloway, who is motivated not by blind revenge but by a philosophy and doesn’t always take himself seriously. Aside from a few cringe-inducing jokes, I like Marcus a lot more. Even though he and his vigilante hacker gang, Dedsec, are a little obnoxious and petty about their crusade against the Orwellian surveillance state this version of America has become, they’re generally relatable.

But, surprise twist: that’s kind of an issue, because I just don’t buy Marcus as a killer who mows people down by the dozen with gaudy, 3D-printed assault weapons. The way he’s portrayed in the cutscenes ranting against the misuse of people’s personal information is passionate, and he seems like a fundamentally good person. And then the mission begins and he might wipe out a group of private security guards, gang members, or worse, actual San Francisco Police, before going back to being relatively happy-go-lucky in the cutscenes again, unfazed by all the murder and chaos. It’s a weird disconnect that feels different than roleplaying as a violent criminal like Trevor Philips or Michael de Santa, and though it didn’t affect the mechanics it was something I was constantly noticing and feeling off about.

Though I attempted it anyway, non-lethal techniques aren’t quite enough when you’re caught in the midst of a high-tech heist. You can melee people and knock them out (or maybe getting hit in the face by Marcus’ improvised melee weapon kills them, I’m not entirely sure), and you have an infinite-ammo stun gun that can incapacitate people at range, but it’s slow to fire (even with an upgrade). It’s no match for a wave of guards with SMGs, and so, not always for the better, out come the big guns.

But my favorite is the ability to summon angry gang members or police and target them at whoever you like by fabricating evidence. It’s not just a means of attack, it’s a fantastic distraction: I love calling them in on the far side of an area and then running in to grab my objective while the guards are too busy dealing with them to notice me. This hilarious power can be abused in a semi-game-breaking way: you can keep calling them in (after your power meter recharges) until every enemy is dead without lifting a finger.

Bay to Breakers

This is a great open world map, and I’m not just saying that because was born in the Bay Area and have lived here for almost my entire life. Watch Dogs 2’s version is super condensed, with entire neighborhoods left on the cutting room floor, but it has all the major landmarks pretty much where they should be. (Thankfully the perpetually gridlocked traffic was omitted.) It’s a fun and diverse place to explore and run amok, and it’s surreal to be in a car chase and suddenly look up and see something like Moscone Center, the Palace of Fine Arts, the Painted Ladies, Fisherman’s Wharf, or Stanford University. I’d recommend it as virtual tourism, especially if you’ve been here before and want a refresher.

This Side Op will activate after you complete the Main Op Haum Sweet Haum . Turns out Haum have a pedophile working for them, and you’re going to deliver some well earned justice.

Follow your waypoint to the target’s house, climb up on the roof and hack into the ctOS box there. Once inside the cameras, bounce between them until you’re on his computer camera facing him, then start hacking everything you can see.

Hit the headset twice to disable it, then the hard-drive, then once he gets out of his seat, shift to the camera on the bookshelf to install the virus into his system. Watch him melt down, then it’s mission complete.
